Washington - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Sunday the U.S. military should review its ban on allowing transgender people to serve openly in the armed forces, saying that "every qualified American" should have an opportunity to serve. President Barack Obama has made lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights a priority during his time in office, and in 2010 signed legislation ending the "don´t ask, don´t tell" policy that had prevented gay men and women from serving openly in the military. Hagel did not make clear whether he felt the ban on transgender troops should be reversed.

Athens - Greece´s Supreme Court has allowed neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn to participate in upcoming European parliament elections, a party lawyer said on Sunday. "We expected this decision. We have faith in Greek justice," lawyer Pavlos Sarakis told AFP. The authorisation came despite an ongoing criminal probe against the political party, six of whose lawmakers including its leader are in prison awaiting trial. Nearly all the party´s 18 lawmakers are under investigation by Greek justice over serious crimes allegedly committed by the once-fringe party over the past two years, during its rise to prominence.

Rogers: U.S. needs tougher foreign

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers argued Sunday that the Obama administration needs to take a tougher approach to foreign policy than tracking online trends and hashtag diplomacy. The Michigan Republican criticized the administration for not designating Boko Haram a terrorist organization years ago. The Islamist militant group is responsible for abducting at least 276 schoolgirls from the northeastern Nigerian village of Chibok last month. The kidnapping prompted a global reaction on social media, particularly Twitter, where the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls was born. First lady Michelle Obama even

And ever since, she’s been fixing up the the property, known as Lily Pond, with virtually no consultation with town Building Inspector Bill Maskiell, according to The Journal News. A New Jersey town canceled its ceremony celebrating new U.S. citizens after federal immigration officials would not allow the event to begin with a prayer. According to the Star-Ledger, Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman had assured U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that the prayer leading Saturday’s ceremony would be nondenominational. “They refused to budge on that,” Reiman said, the paper reported. The battle came just days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that local government meetings can include sectarian prayers. Reiman and immigration officials each cited the high court’s opinion.

Iran nuclear talks: supreme

Iran´s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday that Western expectations for the Islamic Republic to limit its missile program were "stupid and idiotic". The Supreme Leader also called on the country´s Revolutionary Guards to mass-produce missiles. The United States and its allies have said they are worried about Iran´s missile program as they fear the weapons could carry nuclear warheads. Iran has long denied having any plans to develop atomic weapons. "They expect us to limit our missile program while they constantly threaten Iran with military action. So this is a stupid, idiotic expectation," Khamenei was quoted as

Paris - The United Nations is leading a high-level effort this week to improve the way aircraft are tracked to address public concerns over the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet. But the official response to missing Flight MH370 and a similar event in 2009 has already been clouded by rows between planemakers, airlines and pilots about costs and surveillance, new documents show, raising questions about how fast regulators can act. Papers issued as a European agency toughened guidelines for black-box flight recorders last week show disputes about the economic and safety benefits, as manufacturers urged delay and pilots

Republican Rep. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said the latest news about misconduct at the Secret Service is evidence of a larger "leadership failure" at the agency and may indicate the need for a larger personnel shift among top staff there. The Washington Post reported over the weekend that members of the Secret Service unit responsible for guarding the White House perimeter were diverted from their usual posts for roughly two months in 2011 to protect the assistant of the agency´s then-Director Mark Sullivan. Sullivan was concerned that his assistant, Lisa Chopey, was being harassed by a neighbor, and sent agents to keep watch at her home

Washington - For Hillary Rodham Clinton, the last few months might be comparable to a spring cleaning: An airing of her political past before she sets the course for her much speculated-about future. As the former secretary of state and first lady mulls a presidential campaign in 2016, reminders of the tumultuous periods of her career have re-emerged in recent weeks: her husband´s affair in the White House with Monica Lewinsky, her ill-fated attempt to overhaul the health care system and the deadly 2012 attack at a diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya. Bill Clinton said presidential campaigns always need to be about the future,

I’ve been waiting three hours since I saw this tweet for the NYT to publish a transcript or story about what he said, but no dice as I’m writing this. If it happens tonight, I’ll update with a link. The quote’s almost certainly not out of context, though: Remember, Paul told David Axelrod a few weeks ago that he thinks the GOP might be overemphasizing the issue. What’s newsy about this is the tone. Sounds like he’s gone from “maybe this isn’t a great idea” to “let’s drop it, quickly.”Meeting with black pastors and breaking with the party orthodoxy on

Then he embraced and kissed his boyfriend as they shared cake.

Vatican City - A darling of liberal Catholics and an advocate of inclusion and forgiveness, Pope Francis is hardly known for fire and brimstone. Yet, in his words and deeds, the new pope is locked in an epic battle with the oldest enemy of God and creation: The Devil. After his little more than a year atop the Throne of St. Peter, Francis’s teachings on Satan are already regarded as the most old school of any pope since at least Paul VI, whose papacy in the 1960s and 1970s fully embraced the notion of hellish forces plotting to deliver mankind unto damnation. Largely under the radar, theologians and Vatican insiders say,

President Barack Obama is punting his administration´s outrage over Nigerian terror group Boko Haram´s violence to his wife Michelle, giving her the duty of delivering the White House´s weekly radio address on Saturday. The move is an unusual one but not unprecedented: Laura Bush gave a similar address in 2001 when she was first lady, denouncing the treatment of women in Afghanistan. Mrs. Obama has also joined the president in a few radio addresses, but Saturday will mark her first solo appearance. She will also reportedly include a Mother´s Day message. Democrats are thinking about using Internet balloting in 2016 to expand their voter base and select a president -- prompting Republicans to consider such a strategy to keep from losing ground. Iowa Democrats proposed the idea and several others during a recent Democratic National Committee meeting, saying Internet balloting could expand access to their unique caucus process to overseas military personnel, absentee voters and others. They have already conducted some interviews and are now embarked on a “listening tour” to get input from party activists, caucus experts and others, says Iowa Democratic Party spokeswoman Christina Freundlich. “We’re looking at different options,” she told

Hello everyone, I’m Michelle Obama, and on this Mother’s Day weekend, I want to take a moment to honor all the mothers out there and wish you a Happy Mother’s Day. I also want to speak to you about an issue of great significance to me as a First Lady, and more importantly, as the mother of two young daughters. Like millions of people across the globe, my husband and I are outraged and heartbroken over the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls from their school dormitory in the middle of the night. This unconscionable act was committed by a terrorist group determined to keep these girls from getting an education

As Barack Obama enters the twilight of his tenure, the debate over his legacy is beginning, but one conclusion already seems certain. It can best be described as “Honey, I shrunk the presidency.” Not since Jimmy Carter was held hostage by Iran has the Oval Office seemed so inconsequential against the forces of international darkness. The mismatch is particularly striking because smallness has been Obama’s choice. Although he is guilty of executive overreach at home, that bully behavior only sharpens the contrast with a foreign policy that is feeble when it is not comatose. The president’s estrangement from the demands

Sen. Ted Cruz, in a speech to fellow conservatives at the Federalist Society this week, provided detailed evidence of what the right calls the “lawlessness” of the Obama administration. The Texas Republican, in his latest McCarthyesque flourish, said he had a list of “76 instances of lawlessness and other abuses of power.” To his credit, Cruz made his list public. But perhaps he shouldn’t have. An examination of the accusations reveals less about the lawlessness of the accused than about the recklessness of the accuser. Cruz was particularly agitated about President Obama’s use of signing statements, executive orders, recess appointments and
