Time to Mount the Academic Ramparts,

Our colleges and universities have become infectious breeding grounds of the left, fattening their tills as the students are yoked to untenable loans to pay for often useless educations they provide. The federal government encourages this bubble, undermines free speech and due process on campus by regulation and encourages young people to enslave themselves in this way. Is there a way out? This week two related articles on the federal role in higher education caught my attention. In the Wall Street Journal Daniel Henninger discusses the administration’s Orwellian dictates on Title IX In The Federalist Daniel Oliver discusses the mounting student

Comments:
Due to the lousy education offered today in most public schools across our land most businesses require a college/university diploma for many jobs that years ago didn´t.

There is a point in time when the SAT scores started going downhill, I´ve seen charts showing it - it was in the mid ´70´s. I´ve racked my memory for what happened - for it was after I graduated from high school. I am leaning towards school busing, but it could´ve been something else in public education that I, nor many others at the time, paid any attention to.

The dream of a college education for children was a legitimate dream many years ago. But it certainly was the beginning of teaching people that you can´t afford college without the government - so sell your soul. But it didn´t feel that way at the time.

Universities gladly and then greedily took the money, spit out more graduate level degrees than the private sector needed so expanded their administrations and provided jobs for their own creations - hence the "step in line" attitude. And these universities are not at all wise about what they throw their money at - they encourage the undergrads to go for grad degrees, not for the student, but for the federal monies - I´ve witnessed this attitude personally, and found it deeply troubling. They don´t give a darn about these kids.

This nails it.

Our universities -and more broadly, our educational system- are the problem.

They are killing us.

May boils and chiggers be heaped upon Jimmy Carter who carved a growth-of-government Cabinet position out of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Since the creation of the Department of Education, there has been a sickness of liberalism, a dearth of education and a multiplied increase in welfare payments to anyone of the proper minority credentials.

I wish I knew which grant organization funded ´´Sex Week´´ at the University of Tennessee so I could boycott them. Back in the day, college kids could find their own sexual activity without support from the administration. Guided missile, indeed.

PS: Watch any of the ´judge shows´ on TV and see how many students support their opposite or same sex partners with cars, cell phones and apartments with their STUDENT loans.

As long as universities are leftist bastions - we are sowing the seeds of our own destruction and destroying young lives.
Janet Napolitano as Chancellor?
Republicans would be wise to cancel student debt and let young people begin to build normal lives - buying housing and starting families would stimulate economy in productive ways.
Bank debt was written down - let young people get on with their lives.
Regulations must be cancelled and free speech restored.
Administrators and nazi like enforcers should be first fired.

It is passed time to do something the ivy league schools are turning out radicals like obama in droves and it needs to stop if the Republic is to survive. The Feds need to get out of the student loan business all together. Let the students either work their way through college or get loans from a free market which would require guarantees from parents. The poor should get scholarships from the colleges period.

Jimmy Carter and the Dept. of Education was the beginning of the end for worthwhile education in this country. He released the "dumming down" Beast and it has been downhill ever since.

The only bright light seems to be the wonderful students who emerge from Homeschooling.

The university system will collapse on its own in about 10 years. When the generation raised on apps and the internet finally comes to terms with the costs, online education will readily replace the sticks and bricks of the modern campus. Think Amazon vs. Sears.

It can´t come soon enough.

Good article. As with many governmental bureaucracies they begin with good intentions and made their mark with beneficial improvements. Having accomplished their goals & seduced by a taste of power they have to come up with something else to perpetuate their existence and therein lies the problem - they broaden their reach and like an invasive weed they jump their boundaries. Sunshine laws should apply to these agencies, having acquired their goals they should be limited in scope, &/or disbanded and have the States pick up where need be.

OP - I´m guessing that they require a college degree because these days there´s no guarantee that just because someone has a public H.S. diploma he knows how to read, write, add and subtract.

Impeachment: The Red Line
and the Last Straw

Where is the red line of impeachment? In theory, a red line might be located somewhere on a list of impeachable offenses – perhaps at the point where a certain number of transgressions is exceeded, or next to a specific instance because of its significance or impact. In reality, though, that red line exists along a spectrum of “political will.” As Andrew McCarthy explained: “You can have a thousand provable impeachable offenses, but before Congress may remove the president from power, there must be strong popular support – a public will that cuts across partisan and ideological lines.”

France: Mom Kills Kindergarten

PARIS - The mother of a pupil at a French pre-school stabbed a teacher to death in front of her class Friday, the last day of the school year, authorities said. The education minister said the mother apparently had "serious psychiatric problems," and pledged support for teachers in the face of angry or violent parents. Police said the mother was taken into custody. Deadly attacks in a school are extremely rare in France, and the stabbing in front of a class of 5- and 6-year-olds raised concern at the highest levels. French President Francois Hollande expressed outrage at the attack

Life in modern America does not get more cruelly perverse than this: one major reason Judge Debra Nelson threw out George Zimmerman’s libel suit against NBC on Monday was because of Zimmerman’s public pursuit of racial justice. Yes, that George Zimmerman, the same “child killer” who shot black teen Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, in February 2012. In the way of background, Zimmerman had sued NBC for manipulating the substance of his famous call to a police dispatcher to make him sound like a racist. In firing two employees and apologizing publicly, NBC all but admitted its guilt. What saved

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

Employment rates for college graduates are dismal. Aggregate student debt is staggering. But university administrative salaries are soaring. The campus climate of tolerance has utterly disappeared. Only the hard sciences and graduate schools have salvaged American universities’ international reputations. For over two centuries, our superb system of American public and private higher education kept pace with radically changing times and so ensured our prosperity and reinforced democratic pluralism. But a funny thing has happened on the way to the 21st century. Colleges that were once our most enlightened and tolerant institutions

Were I to update my 2007 book, What’s the Matter with California, I would dedicate a chapter to Elliot Rodger, the sexually jealous young man who stabbed, shot, and ran over a score of victims, seven of them fatally, in his hate-filled Santa Barbara rampage. Unlike many recent mass killers -- Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook), Jared Lee Loughner (Tucson), and James Holmes (Aurora) -- Rodger was sane enough to tell the world what ailed him, and this he did in a lucid, well written, 140-page memoir/ manifesto titled “My Twisted World.” better title might have been “Our Twisted World.”

And what a bang up job that woman has done. For years now, our very own First Lady has appeared on shows like Oprah and Nightline and broadcast her undying dedication to getting military families the multifaceted support they need – none of which she’s done, but that’s beside the point. One unavoidable truth that must be faced regarding the media and 2014 is this: the American media has the conservatives’ number. They know exactly where the blind spots are, which are the most sensitive points, and how to do the most damage. And they have absolutely no compunction about taking advantage of it. The relationship between conservatives and the media recalls the old skit by Monty Python concerning “the advantages of not being seen.” A plummy voice calls out, “Will Christine please stand up?” Christine rises from behind a bush, there’s an explosion, and down again she goes. “Will Todd stand

Among the unsung victims of the September 11, 2012, terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi was the First Amendment. To protect its fragile narrative that an anti-Muslim video had agitated a Libyan crowd into attacking the consulate, the Obama White House and its allies set out to identify and punish the maker of that video, and this they did with a speed and severity that the attackers themselves were spared. Scarier still, to the degree the major media noticed, they cheered. In a phone conversation I had with video maker Nakoula Basseley Nakoula last week, he had one pressing question:

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".)
