Great view of Saturn this weekend;
see it in the sky or online

Los Angeles Times, by Deborah Netburn

Saturn lovers, listen up! This weekend is your best chance to view the most gorgeous planet in our solar system for all of 2014, and you don´t want to miss it. On Saturday Saturn will be in opposition, which means it will be directly opposite the sun from the perspective of Earth. The ringed planet will rise into view just as the sun sets and will dip beneath the horizon just as the sun rises. At the same time, Saturn will be closer to the Earth than any other time in 2014, so it will look bigger and brighter, and its rings will be visible in heightened detail compared to the rest of the year. Saturn will be shining brightly in the night sky near the constellation Libra,

For those of US stargazers, something to watch and see the beauty of God´s Creation. (I´m a huge fan of Hubble images, as well as any from the Martian landers, etc.) Gone are the days of looking up for the Goodrich blimp...

GOP senators unveil
‘choice’ plan for VA patients
Washington Times, by Jacqueline Klimas    Original Article

Senate Republicans on Tuesday unveiled a proposal to let veterans caught in long waiting lines go outside the VA system to get medical care, seeking to harness the private sector to help clean up some of the problems that have plagued the department. The bill, dubbed the “Veterans Choice Act,” would give veterans who live far away from a VA facility or who have waited too long for an appointment the right to see another doctor outside the VA system — but the VA would still pick up the tab, including any co-payments. “This empowers the veteran to make the decision, vs. relying on a bureaucrat to determine that they want to divert

Des Moines, IA - State Sen. Joni Ernst has won the Republican primary for an Iowa U.S. Senate seat held for 30 years by retiring Democrat Tom Harkin. The 43-year-old Ernst won the nomination over five candidates. She´ll face Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley in the November general election. All the Republicans seeking the nomination described themselves as deeply conservative, but Ernst managed to stand out in part due to two television ads. One featured her on a farm, talking about her experience castrating hogs, and the other showed her firing a handgun. Ernst also received endorsements from a variety of groups and individuals,

Republicans’ attempts at

The GOP push to replace Obamacare is stuck in neutral, with Republicans deeply fractured over what to do and fearful of giving President Obama and his Democratic allies an easy target ahead of November’s elections. House Republican leaders vowed earlier this year to craft and vote on a bold proposal to fulfill the second part of its repeal-and-replace approach to Obamacare. But those plans have been derailed by rank-and-file lawmakers who say they want to see tweaks, but don’t want to vote on sweeping alternatives. (Snip) “Repeal and replace” was the GOP’s mantra beginning with the 2010 “Pledge to America” and continuing through

In Idaho hometown,

The initial euphoria in Idaho over Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release is turning to alarm over reports that the long-held prisoner of war may have been a deserter. Yellow ribbons, balloons and signs reading, “Bowe is Free At Last” still decorate Main Street in Sgt. Bergdahl’s hometown of Hailey, Idaho, but criticism of the newly released Taliban prisoners is starting to temper the excitement on social media and talk radio. (Snip) Hailey Mayor Fritz Haemmerle issued a statement Monday saying that the city “respectfully requests that people do not pre-judge this young man.” “There are those who have negative opinions

Washington - The White House argued on Tuesday that the “unique circumstances” presented by the opportunity to return Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl gave President Obama the authority to lawfully bypass a federal statute requiring the Pentagon to notify Congress a month before he transferred the five Taliban detainees necessary to complete the deal. But the White House was forced by turns to defend its decision not to notify Congress and send important aides to Mr. Obama to try to apologize to angry lawmakers (Snip) “The United States has always had a pretty sacred rule, and that is, we don’t leave our men or women in uniform behind.”

Sgt. Evan Buetow was Bowe Bergdahl´s team leader in Afghanistan. Buetow says radio chatter shortly after Bergdahl deserted indicated he was seeking someone in the Taliban who could speak English. In an interview with CNN´s Jake Tapper, Buetow says shortly after Bergdahl disappeared he encountered two Afghan children who claimed they´d seen a lone American soldier crawling through the reeds. Within a day of that moment, Buetow was standing by a radio where translators were listening to chatter. They heard someone saying that an American soldier was looking for an English speaker so he could talk with the Taliban.

Ramallah, West Bank — Declaring that a “black page in history has been turned forever,” President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority swore in a new government on Monday intended to reunite the West Bank and Gaza Strip after seven years of harsh political and social division, though disputes over the cabinet’s composition played out publicly until the last minute. Cairo - Egypt´s interior ministry has asked foreign technology firms to help it monitor social media websites to prevent crime and track down terrorists, officials said on Monday, another sign that the government intends to stifle all forms of dissent. Seven foreign firms have offered proposals for monitoring social media websites, an interior ministry official said. Interior Ministry officials did not name the companies. The plan was announced days after former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the man who toppled Egypt´s first freely-elected leader, won a landslide victory in a presidential election, according to provisional results.

In 2010, The Taliban claimed U.S. soldier Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl had converted to Islam and had taught them bomb-making techniques. Bergdahl had also changed his name to Abdullah, the Taliban claimed, though the mainstream media largely ignored the story, seeing it as comparable to the tale of Sgt. Brody in the fictional Homeland television series on Showtime. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) also dismissed the claims, insinuating that it was jihadist propaganda. But in the aftermath of Sgt. Bergdahl’s release yesterday, more information has come to light, raising further questions as to whether the Taliban had in fact

I had a nasty feeling the good news about the imminent release of Christian woman Meriam Ibrahim by the Islamofascist regime in Sudan might not hold up. Sure enough, CNN reports today that what passes for a "government" in Sudan is backtracking, and Ms. Ibrahim - the wife of a U.S. citizen, who just gave birth while shackled in a filthy dungeon cell - is still scheduled to die for refusing to renounce Christianity, once she´s been given a little time to nurse her newborn daughter: Sudan's foreign ministry denied published reports that a woman sentenced to death for refusing to renounce her Christian faith is expected to be released.

President Obama has given his own military a reason to hate him — not just be skeptical of him, but actively hate him — for releasing five senior Taliban commanders in exchange for a captured US soldier who appears to be a deserter. Here’s another. Those five Taliban commanders arrived in Qatar, under no evident guard of any kind, and got a hero’s welcome. The politics and legalities of all this are bad enough. We have a president knowingly breaking laws because he knows he can get away with it, and we have a government that has set the precedent

For five years, soldiers have been forced to stay silent about the disappearance and search for Bergdahl. Now we can talk about what really happened. It was June 30, 2009, and I was in the city of Sharana, the capitol of Paktika province in Afghanistan. As I stepped out of a decrepit office building into a perfect sunny day, a member of my team started talking into his radio. “Say that again,” he said. “There’s an American soldier missing?” There was. His name was Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, the only prisoner of war in the Afghan theater of operations.

LGBT rights just got another big push from the president himself. From the moment the father of Bowe Bergdahl took the stage with President Barack Obama, it was clear the Bergdahls were not an average US military family. Sporting a long, bushy beard that he refused to trim since his son went missing in 2009, Bob Bergdahl spoke Pashto, Afghanistan´s main language, and also a few words of Arabic at the White House press conference announcing his son´s release. Some critics of the deal to free the only remaining American prisoner of war have shifted their attention to Mr Bergdahl and his controversial statements. Just a few days before his son

WASHINGTON -- Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl can expect a buoyant homecoming after five years in Taliban hands, but those in the government who worked for his release face mounting questions over the prisoner swap that won his freedom. Even in the first hours of Bergdahl´s handoff to U.S. special forces in eastern Afghanistan, it was clear this would not be an uncomplicated yellow-ribbon celebration. Five terrorist suspects also walked free, stirring a debate in Washington over whether the exchange will heighten the risk of other Americans being snatched as bargaining chips and whether the released detainees - several senior Taliban figures

The last time National Security Adviser Susan Rice made a memorable appearance on the Sunday morning news shows it was on five different networks in 2012 to spread the ridiculous and untrue fable that a YouTube video had been the cause of four deaths in Benghazi, as opposed to terrorists the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton should have been prepared for. With about a quarter of the primary contests now over, the results of the cycle’s high-profile endorsements tell the story of the Republican Party itself, with an early surge of business-friendly Establishment-backed successes, a handful of Tea Party wipeouts, and plenty of scores still left to settle. Acting as commander-in-chief, President Obama exchanged five terrorist leaders for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The rationale was that the United States leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield or in enemy hands. That is half of the equation. The disconcerting other half is that Bergdahl may have left behind his own unit and gone over to the enemy. In 2009, then Pvt. Bergdahl (automatically promoted in absentia to the rank of sergeant) left his frontline unit under the cover of darkness. Soon after, the Taliban reported him in their custody. For weeks, thousands of American soldiers risked their lives to
