Urban Texans Lead Nation

Among large cities with 200,000 or more people, according to a report released this week by the Census Bureau, five communities in Texas led the nation in having the smallest percentage of workers commuting by bicycle. In the border city of Laredo, Texas, in the five year period from 2008 through 2012, 0.0 percent of workers rode bikes to work. That topped all large cities for the smallest percentage of workers commuting by bike. In Garland, Plano, Fort Worth and Dallas, only 0.1 percent biked to work. These Texas cities tied for next to last. In four other Texas cities, only 0.2 percent rode bikes to work. These included Arlington,

Comments:
When you have to drive 40 to 120 miles, or more, round trip to work and back, biking isn´t possible. Many people in rural states and large states drive long distances to work, even when they live within a city. The type of work might necessitate a vehicle to transport tools, supplies, etc., and some people just don´t ride bicycles period.

For all intents and purposes Laredo, TX is a Mexican city.

If God had intended grown men and women to ride bikes to work, He wouldn´t have invented pick-up trucks -- the national vehicle of Texas.

We may not ride bikes to work, but at least we do have an awful lot of people working. Probably not something they can say in most of those places with a lot of bike commuters.

Texas cities were never designed like cities in the north east. Employers are spread all over many square miles in most Texas cities. It´s the same reason that the type of mass transit that works up north just doesn´t work in Texas. Most people live at least 10 miles or more from their employers. Add the 100+ degree days you experience for over 6 months out of the years in most of Texas, and we´ll keep going to our bountiful jobs in our nice air conditioned vehicles, thank you very much!!!

1. Hot most of the year (which is tolerable, but not really conducive to riding to work all hot and nasty)
2. Bad "drivers" (many of whom have neither licenses nor insurance and no "cultural" concept related to driving, licensing, and insurance)
3. Long distances
4. Roads not accommodating to cyclists

Hardly anyone in Texas lives close enough to work to bike. And, as earlier posters said, it´s HOT for a lot of the year. There would have to be time allowed for a shower and a clothing change upon arrival at the office. No thanks, we´ll just drive.

There´s just something odd about Texas cowboys and their bicycles. It just doesn´t fit. And a cowboys outfit doesn´t really fit riding a bike to work. Now, as another poster says, a cowboy and his truck seems somehow right and fitting. In fact now that I think about it, I never saw a cowboy riding herd on a bunch of cows on his bicycle!! (That´s why God invented horses and pickups.)

If people tried to bike to work in Texas, half of them would be dead of heat stroke before they got halfway there. Even if they arrived alive, the extra energy expended for showers would eat up any possible energy savings.

Why is this a negative? Do we view living in caves as progress? Or suffering from 3rd world disease?

The automobile improved lives by freeing us from the problem of distance. No longer would people be forced to live in squalid, disease infested cities. But that´s what leftists want. Pack us all in, make us dependent of government to provide food, housing and safety, and keep us dumb and happy.

Visit the holding pens at a slaughterhouse to see the leftist utopia future.

11) Trite foolishness? For the most part, yes. Southwestern cities aren´t designed to be bicycle-friendly. On the other hand, my last four jobs were well within cycling distance. There was only one of those, however, in which biking to work was safely feasible. Fortunately, in that job, showing up sweaty wasn´t an issue.

12) There are thankfully now places in Texas where 90mph can be gotten away with. The last time I tried it, though, there was a sheriff´s deputy who didn´t share my viewpoint.

Besides the heat in the summer the cold and wind in the winter north of DFW makes riding a bike to unpleasant. Fair reporting would have included the average summer temp for Laredo and the average ´real feel´ winter temp for Amarillo.

The better idea would be to invest in urban revitalization to reduce the commute. If it weren´t for asbestos abandoned buildings would be profitable in a remodel for upscale housing. Ft Worth has turned their urban area into the hot spot to live. My daughter lives in a gated apt bldg on the edge of the Arts District on what was probably a run down lot.

DFW would be miserable to bike to work! It´s a gigantic cement jungle that´s hotter than blazes! Folks are not going to even think about biking to work in huge numbers! Also, in DFW area, folks like speed and baby, bikes just won´t appeal to those Texans.

A Brazilian man whose parents were African slaves could be the oldest living person ever documented after receiving a birth cerficate showing he turned 126 last week, it was reported on Tuesday. Jose Aguinelo dos Santos was born on July 7 1888, just two months after slavery was abolished in Brazil - the last country in the world to outlaw the trade. Yet the batchelor, who never married or had children, still walks without a stick, eats four meals a day and has no health problems - despite smoking a packet of cigarettes a day for the last 50 years.
