By some standards we are better educated than any humans who have ever lived. CBS News says that a high school diploma is only the beginning. (Snip) The learning experience of the past was more than the award of a diploma. It was the transmission of culture. Today we have more formal education than ever. But it may be time to ask: of what should it really consist? Is it a credential? Or is it a set of attitudes and skills that will help the learner get by in life? Are we getting value for money from the vast multibillion

Comments:
Occasionally we are treated to a representative high school test from the late Nineteenth Century that students had to pass in order to earn their diplomas. Even college graduates of the early Twenty-First century probably couldn´t pass such tests. I have recounted my own astonishment at meeting a 1969 high school graduate who couldn´t read at a first grade level. Public education has only gotten worse since then. At some point in the not too distant future Amnerica will pay a terrible price for the (essentially enforced) ignorance of her citizens.

When I graduated from high school long, long ago, HS diplomas were printed in Latin and, sadly, half of HS grads could not read them. Today HS diplomas are printed in English and, sadly, half of HS grads can not read them.

At our local high school, we have sports days, teacher training days, lots of snow days, school closed for utility outages and bomb threats, various feel good assemblies and all manner of other reasons not to teach. We are one of the dumbest districts in the state and one of the dumbest states in the country.
Of the dozen or so students who are high performers, all came from out of state. They are truly preparing the next generation of coal miners and unwed mothers. They seem fine with that.

The way a stove top expresso maker works is by heating one chamber full of water and letting steam push coffee into the relative vacuum of another. (Snip) Will the fighting become general? Perhaps the better question is to ask why it should not become general for the same reasons that Slaughter already described. Whether in Eastern Europe or Asia, the same practice of neglect can be observed. In each place Obama has lit a pressure chamber and the steam has to go somewhere. In he Middle East, Syria/Iraq has now become the steam chamber, and if there is any

PORTLAND, Maine — A report that scientists are calling one of the most comprehensive studies of great white sharks finds that their numbers are surging in the ocean off the Eastern U.S. and Canada after decades of decline — bad news if you´re a seal, but something experts say shouldn´t instill fear in beachgoers this summer. The study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, published this month in the journal PLOS ONE, says the population of the notoriously elusive fish has climbed since about 2000 in the western North Atlantic. The scientists behind the study attribute the resurgence to

TALLAHASSEE — Since leaving the governor’s mansion in 2010, Democrat Charlie Crist has more than doubled his net worth, with much of the money coming from prestigious positions and consulting contracts he received from large political donors. Some were helping Crist build his net worth while knowing that the Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat likely would run again for governor. In 2010, Crist listed his net worth at $466,063, a number that has jumped to $1.2 million, according to financial disclosure forms he filed Tuesday when submitting his official paperwork to get on the ballot as a candidate for governor. Crist said it

NBC’s Chuck Todd looks at the president’s polling and concludes it is disastrous for Obama, though not necessarily for for the Democratic Party. It is one of a series of messages disassociating the fortunes of the liberal enterprise from the collapsing presidency. The new point of departure is cooperating with Iran. In the third execution nationwide in less than 24 hours, a three-time Florida murderer was put to death by lethal injection Wednesday night. The execution of John Ruthell Henry was the state´s 13th since April 2013 and the 18th since Gov. Rick Scott took office in 2011. The trio of executions Tuesday and Wednesday were the first since the botched lethal injection of an Oklahoma killer in April. Henry, 63, was pronounced dead at 7:43 p.m. after being injected with three drugs at the Florida State Prison in Starke. He was convicted in the 1985 stabbing deaths of Suzanne Henry

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An environmental group wants federal wildlife managers to revise a decades-old recovery plan for grizzly bears to ensure the animal´s return to more areas of the West. The Center for Biological Diversity filed its petition Wednesday with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It identifies more than 171 square miles in a handful of western states as suitable habitat for the bears. Those areas include a forested region straddling the Arizona-New Mexico border, the Grand Canyon, the Sierra Nevada in California and parts of Utah and Colorado. The recovery plan for grizzlies dates back to 1993. The

A federal appeals court has rejected a bid to delay the execution of John Ruthell Henry, who is scheduled to be executed at 6 tonight at the Florida State Prison in Raiford. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta issued an opinion late Tuesday, said capital cases clerk Jan Camp. Only the U.S. Supreme Court could now delay Henry´s execution, Camp added. Henry was sentenced to death for murdering his wife in Zephyrhills in 1985. CLEARWATER — Behind closed doors, there’s a small population illegally dwelling within the city. These residents are well-mannered, relatively clean and, aside from possibly causing a small drop in supermarket egg sales, wouldn’t be much of an economic burden if there were more of them. At least, that’s what a growing number of residents who want the city to legalize backyard chickens are saying. Spearheading the movement is lifelong resident Erin Bennett, 31. She has been trying to persuade the Clearwater City Council to take up the issue since January. Last month, the council decided not to discuss the matter.

The Obama administration’s claim to have been surprised by the wave of children flooding over out borders may turn out to be another political lie of the year. Sundance of Conservative Treehouse noticed a very peculiar advertisement: On January 29th of this year, the federal government posted an advertisement seeking bids for a vendor contract to handle “Unaccompanied Alien Children“. Not just any contract mind you, but a very specific contract – for a very specific number of unaccompanied minors: 65,000. • Why would DHS and ICE be claiming “surprise” by the current influx of unaccompanied minors on the border

The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. Outwardly, they put on a show of unity — but privately, the Obamas and Clintons, the two power couples of the Democrat Party, loathe each other. “I hate that man Obama more than any man I’ve ever met, more than any man who ever lived,” Bill Clinton said to friends on one occasion, adding he would never forgive Obama for suggesting he was a racist during the 2008 campaign. The feeling is mutual. Obama made excuses not to talk to Bill, while the first lady privately sniped about Hillary. On most evenings, Michelle Obama and her trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett, met in a quiet corner of the White House residence.

I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

All that mattered was that he was a man. To say that this development didn’t sit well with the progressive-minded women of this country is an understatement.
