Olympian-turned-war-hero Louis
Zamperini is Rose Parade grand marshal

Los Angeles Times, by Veronica Rocha

An Olympic athlete who went on to become a World War II hero and inspire a bestselling novel, Louis Zamperini, was named the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade’s grand marshal Friday in Pasadena. The 97-year-old war veteran´s life demonstrates “the strength of human spirit,” perfectly representing the parade’s “Inspiring Stories” theme, said Tournament of Roses President Richard Chinen. “He is the very definition of an inspiring story,” Chinen said. Having grown up in Torrance, Zamperini said he was familiar with the procession and looked forward to sharing his experience with his friends and family on Jan. 1 at the

Great news! The selection of a Grand Marshal - and their acceptance - is one of the most difficult tasks for the Tournament of Roses president.

I encourage everyone to read that book. I pushed it back on my shelves for a while, because I don´t like war stories and especially not POW stories, but Louis´s story transcends the genre. As #1 said, it´s a great book.

Let´s correct an oversight. Laura Hillenbrand is the author of Unbroken.
Also, please read her great book Seabiscuit.
Ms. Hillenbrand researches extensively, then delivers a story that reaches deep into your soul.

I´ll bet the Libs aren´t happy with this selection. They disdain "warriors" and prefer more refined, gentle people. I doubt that he´s "gay," so there´s one strike against him right off the bat.

A boss at work said he was tired because he was up most of the night reading. I asked what and he told me about Unbroken.

Let me tell you, an absolutely stunning story, including the story of WWII and America in general, unbelievable if it weren´t true, written by an incredibly skilled author.

I read until my eyes couldn´t stay open. I´d love to meet Louis, a truly amazing man. Also would love to meet the author - such lyrical and fascinating prose.

Unbroken is a wonderful book. Its author never met Louis Zamperini in public. She has an illness that keeps her confined to her home. But you would never know it. Her sensitivity to her subject is astounding.

This book is a very definite Must Read.

As for the remark up the thread about Liberal criticism, everyone in Pasadena is thrilled about his being chosen to be Grand Marshal. There have been military personnel in the past. In 1951 General Eisenhower was unable to accept the honor and asked that a veteran of the Korean War be chosen in his place. There were few veterans of that conflict back here at that early time - and most were too seriously wounded to do this. Twenty-one-year-old Marine Cpl. Robert S. Gray was chosen. Although he was seriously wounded in the long, historic move out of the Chosin Reservoir (Marines never retreat), he was able to leave the hospital at Camp Pendleton and ride in the Parade. And to appear on the cover of LIFE Magazine.

In later years some Medal of Honor awardees were chosen. Memory fails about whether there have been any others.

Each Grand Marshal is the choice of the Tournament of Roses president. The Tournament has a long history. There have been outside pressures by activist groups, but the members of this fine volunteer organization are a very patriotic lot.

Such great news. I wrote in a book review on Amazon that Unbroken should be required reading for every American. When the American pilots finally flew over the POW camp, dropping supplies to the starving soldiers, I just teared up. Heroes, all of them, and no better representative than Louis Zamperini. And when I watch the parade on TV, I will stand when Mr Z is shown.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s political landscape is being upended by a landmark legal ruling that one legal expert says could influence the way other states draw their congressional districts. A circuit judge ruled late Thursday that the state Legislature illegally drew Florida’s congressional districts to primarily benefit the Republican Party. Judge Terry Lewis ruled that two of the state’s 27 congressional districts were invalid and that the map must be redrawn. Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Law School who tracks redistricting cases, called the decision a “big victory” for Florida’s voters that could be a model for other states to

President Barack Obama is holding off for now on seeking new legal authority to send unaccompanied migrant kids back home faster from the Southern border, following criticism that the administration´s planned changes were too harsh. Instead when Obama formally asks Congress for more than $2 billion in emergency spending Tuesday to deal with the border crisis, the request will not be accompanied by the policy changes that the White House had indicated it planned to seek, according to two congressional aides. The aides spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the matter by name

It´s probably safe to go back in the water. Despite a recent string of shark sightings off Manhattan Beach, including one that ended with a swimmer being hospitalized after he was bitten near the pier Saturday morning, reports of shark attacks are uncommon in the United States, records show. According to data tracked by the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were 39 reported shark attacks in California from 2001 to 2013, or 3.25 per year, and five of them resulted in fatalities. East Coast swimmers are much more likely to wind up the victims of a shark attack, according to the data.
