Mel Brooks on Blazing New Comedic
Trails in ´Blazing Saddles´

Mel Brooks is to comedy what air is to mammals: Essential. From stage to radio to television to film, Brooks´s zany brand of bonkers is responsible for more snickers, snorts, and guffaws than perhaps anyone in entertainment. With EGOT-winning credits dating back eight decades, there are gems a-plenty, but according to Brooks, none rank higher than his masterpiece, "Blazing Saddles." "It´s the funniest movie, I think, by far. No matter what the AFI list says," explains Brooks. "Five should be the next number. One to four should be ´Blazing Saddles.´" For those of you who haven´t seen the movie, shame on you. Stop

My experience is that it is usually more funny for guys. While I very much enjoyed it, my all-time favorite western comedy remains Cat Ballou.

Call me in the minority. But I always thought this movie was overrated. Like SNL skits, many of the scenes run way too long, and it always seemed like the cast was having a better time than the audience.

Blazing Saddles is and always will be a classic, because it couldn´t possibly be replicated today. People involved would be fired, sued, ostracized, run out of town, etc. (Think Don Sterling here).
What happened to us? We used to be able to laugh at ourselves.

"Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein" remain at the top of my list. Memorable quotes come back often:

"I didn´t get a ´Harrumph´ out of that guy!"

"It´s twue! It´s really trwue!"

"Werewolf!" - "There wolf"

"Abby something..."

But, Mel leaves out one of his greatest triumphs - Get Smart!

Melvin Kaminsky has an overly-inflated view of his abilities.

Blazing Saddles - - like all of his movies - - threw everything at the wall - - in the hope that some of it would stick. There was an occasional laugh in there - - but most of it was trite, clichéd, and obvious.

Nothing is too low or too vulgar for Mel to try. For inventive, well-played, and clean laughs - - lots of them - - It´s A Mad Mad World has everything Mel did beat by miles.

I appreciate Mel´s talent, but a little bit of him goes a LONG way with me. Can´t sit through a whole movie.

If I have to hear DH singing "Puttin´ on the Ritz" a la Peter Boyle in "Young Frankenstein" one more time, though...

The Bennie Hill of America...camp humor.

My favorite was his nustling of a young princess type and looking into the camera..."It´s GOOD to be KING!"

Too Bad Obie hasn´t figured out his ´real job´.

Mel had his roots in slapstick and vaudeville and is a master of the sight gag and innuendo. It also helps if you understand a little Yiddish or German, as some of the most non-PC lines were in Yiddish.

Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite movies. I´ve seen it scores of times and still find layers to the jokes and new laughs at the audacity of it all.

I can appreciate that Mel Brooks style may not be everyone´s taste, but behind the buffoonery is genius. BS (great abbreviation) is a no-holds-barred honest discussion of race and blind prejudice camouflaged by rat-a-tat-tat vaudeville repartee. The best way to deal with painful subjects is to go to the gigantic gag for the big laugh. Its a tricky way to go, but Brooks is the master of the technique.

I love Mel Brooks movies, especially Young Frankenstein. YF and BS have some of the most repeatable dialogue this side of The Princess Bride. Marty Feldman as Igor was priceless and his theft of the brain of "Abby Normal" became the inspiration for my user name.

The Roman Empire and Inquisition segments of "History of the World, Part One" were pretty funny, too. The French Revolution segment was a little too dragged out to be effective. Though it did give us the immortal lines "It´s good to be the king" and "Don´t be saucy, Bearnaise."

Politics OK, sex not so much: Cleavon Little´s inspired ad-lib during the filming of this audio-only blackout scene was too much for the ´70s censors: "I´m sorry to disappoint you, lady, but you´re sucking on my arm."

The percentage of adults without health insurance has plummeted since major provisions of the Affordable Care Act took effect at the beginning of this year, but opposition to the law has intensified, according Gallup-Healthways surveys. In a conference call Thursday, an analyst for the organization painted a comprehensive picture where the law known as Obamacare stands with the public and the effects it has had on health coverage. The results are based on some 2 million interviews the company has conducted since 2008. As of April, 43 percent of Americans approved of the law, while 51 percent disapproved. Dan Witters, research

The U.S. economy was battered even more than first suspected by the harsh winter, actually shrinking from January through March. The result marked the first retreat in three years, but economists are confident the downturn was temporary. Gross domestic product contracted at an annual rate of 1 percent in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That was worse than the government´s initial estimate last month that GDP during the period grew by a slight 0.1 percent. The economy last posted a decline in the first three months of 2011 when it dropped 1.3 percent. This year´s weakening reflected slower stockpiling

A Fox News exclusive reported this morning by Jana Winter inexplicably buried the lede. Winter reports that several dead children have been discovered “washed up along the riverbank” of the Rio Grande, but fails to note that there have been no reports by the Obama administration on this. This indicates a pattern of covering up dead illegal alien kids by the Obama administration. It was two weeks before news was reported on the sole child death acknowledged by the Obama administration, Gilberto Ramos, a 15 year-old boy from Guatemala whose body was found in the Texas brush dead from the

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
