A woman who, as a newborn, was abandoned in the bathroom of a Pennsylvania fast-food restaurant said she has found her birth mother just three weeks after launching a search that garnered worldwide attention, and as her mother prepared to look for her. Katheryn Deprill, 27, said Tuesday she felt "pure joy" when she met her biological mother for the first time Monday at an attorney´s office. And, after she learned the sad details of her conception and abandonment, she said she understood why her mom did what she did. "She is better than anything I could´ve ever imagined. She

First Amendment enthusiasts are thrilled that Mike Adams, a criminology professor at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, won his lawsuit against administrators who denied him a promotion because of his conservative, Christian views. Adams joined the university in 1993. He was an atheist at the time. By the year 2000, he had converted to Christianity and become an outspoken political conservative. He eventually wrote columns for Townhall.com.

A glitch in Obamacare

Nearly six months after the disastrous launch of Healthcare.gov, with the website running smoothly and more than five million people signed up as open enrollment heads to a close, a new glitch has come to light: Incorrect poverty-level guidelines are automatically telling what could be tens of thousands of eligible people they do not qualify for subsidized insurance. The error in the federal marketplace primarily affects households with incomes just above the poverty line in states like Pennsylvania that have not expanded Medicaid. The mistake raises the price of their insurance by thousands of dollars, making insurance so unaffordable many

The Republican establishment gloated after three underfunded Tea Party challengers failed to knock off incumbent Republicans in primaries on Tuesday while another establishment-backed candidate secured the GOP nomination for Senate in North Carolina. "Next up is that fraud @MattBevin! #GOP,” tweeted Jahan Wilcox, a former aide to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who is now the RNC´s director of rapid response. (He later deleted it and said his thoughts were his “personal opinions.”)Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) defeated her primary challenger Frank Roche despite a series of high-profile outbursts in support of amnesty. Ellmers was heavily backed by Facebook co-founder Mark

Harry Reid’s obsession with the Koch brothers has made him a figure of fun, but frankly, it has gotten past the point where anyone is laughing. After Reid’s foray onto the Senate floor today, his family, friends and colleagues should be concerned about his mental health. This clip is only 30 seconds long, but it speaks volumes about Reid’s state of mind:(Snip for video)“Pollution” isn’t causing global warming, the Koch brothers are not the “two richest people in the world,” and the idea that the brothers are somehow one of the “main causes” of climate change is delusional, even if

The National Climate Assessment released today by the White House says that as a result of climate change the sea level could rise 8 inches, 11 inches, 4 feet or 6.6 feet by the year 2100, but that a rise of less than 8 inches or more than 6.6 feet is "considered implausible." “Scientists are working to narrow the range of sea level rise projections for this century,” said the report. “Recent projections show that for even the lowest emissions scenarios, thermal expansion of ocean waters and the melting of small mountain glaciers will result in 11 inches of sea

Charles and David Koch are one of the “main causes” of climate change, charged Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on the Senate floor. “While the Koch brothers admit to not being experts on the matter, these billionaire oil tycoons are certainly… experts at contributing to climate change. That’s what they do very well. They are one of the main causes of this. Not a cause, the main cause,” Reid said. Now in his fifth month of flogging the billionaire conservative benefactors on the Senate floor, Reid dubbed them “multizillionaires” on Wednesday and mockingly applauded their spokeswoman for saying the Kochs and

An immense explosion has been heard throughout the northern Iranian city of Qazvin, semi-official Fars news agency reported, and many casualties are expected from the blast. Around 1.1 million people live in the city, which is located about 100 miles north of Tehran. The blast may be related to nuclear development in Iran, according to the Los Angeles Times. Iranian officials in the past have strongly denied claims by Mujahedin Khalq Organization, or MKO, a cult-like Iranian exile group, that it has a secret nuclear enrichment facility in Abyek, near the major city, according to the daily. The House voted Wednesday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about the agency’s improper scrutiny of Tea Party groups. The 231 to 187 vote, which attracted just 6 Democrats, marked the latest escalation in the nearly yearlong IRS controversy, which broke last May when Lerner acknowledged and apologized for the agency’s singling out of Tea Party groups seeking tax-exempt status. Republicans said the move to hold Lerner in contempt was both reluctant and a long time coming, after they’d tried to secure her testimony for more than 11 months. Lerner has

Hillary Clinton has mostly steered clear of contentious domestic political issues in recent years, but on Tuesday, she said gun laws need to be reined in. Speaking at a National Council for Behavioral Health conference outside of Washington, Clinton was asked about the role guns play in suicides. While Clinton said she supports Second Amendment rights, she added that there needs to be a proper trade-off between safety and freedom, and that things have swung too far toward the latter. "I think again we´re way out of balance. We´ve got to rein in what has become almost an article of faith that

WASHINGTON — Thom Tillis won the GOP Senate nomination North Carolina on Tuesday, delivering a big win to establishment Republicans over Tea Party insurgents. Tillis, speaker of the North Carolina House, easily got over the 40% threshold needed to avoid a runoff in the closely watched Senate primary. Obstetrician Greg Brannon, who had the support of Tea Party favorite Rand Paul, was coming in second in the eight-person field as results were being reported by the Associated Press. The North Carolina Senate race was the first primary contest pitting the Tea Party and grass-roots conservatives vs. mainstream Republicans. The skirmishes will

Two teenagers were shot and killed while carrying out a home invasion in Sacramento, California. The suspects are 16-year-old Steven Crider and his 14-year-old accomplice Michael Sambrano. The Sacramento neighborhood had witnessed a rash of automobile and property crime, including a burglary on Easter Sunday of the very home where the teenagers were shot. Fingerprints taken from the scene of that crime match those of one of the dead teens. After that burglary, 68-year-old Alice Hubbard Gordinho asked her brother Brently Hubbard, who is in his 70s, to protect her. When the teens returned to the scene of the crime

Nancy Pelosi issued a statement this morning on the soon-to-be-formed House Select Committee to investigate Benghazi. Byron York comments: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is complaining that the new select committee on Benghazi will have more Republican members than Democrats. “If this review is to be fair, it must be truly bipartisan,” Pelosi said in a just-released statement. “The panel should be equally divided between Democrats and Republicans, as is done on the House Ethics Committee.” Is that a reasonable request? Not if precedent is a guide: In 2007, the House created a Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, egged on by his parents and brother, former President George W. Bush, is seriously considering a 2016 bid, according to sources close to the Republican. They claim that Bush wants to run but will test the waters to gauge the reaction to his ideas, such as immigration reform and support for the controversial Common Core education standards, and his last name. He is also wants to see reception of his wife and family, who they said are not keen on him running. Bush has said he would try to make his mind up by the end of the year, but has now become more serious about testing his ideas in public.

My hope was sparked this week that we just might have a more nuanced conversation about gender and the presidency than we did last time Hillary Clinton ran. The reason for this (admittedly vain) optimism was—perhaps perversely—Monica Lewinsky’s 4,000-word Vanity Fair piece about the aftermath of her self-described “mutual relationship” with Hillary Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton. No, details of the affair itself don’t have any bearing on Clinton’s qualifications as a still-imaginary 2016 candidate for the White House. But reckoning with what happened two decades ago to both Lewinsky and to Hillary Clinton—in the press, in feminist discourse,
