Lewinsky scandal players:
Where are they now?

From a Christmas shop to academia, key players in the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal took different paths in the years since the investigation that led to a president´s impeachment. Lanny Davis Davis served as special counsel to President Clinton and was a leading spokesman for the White House during the impeachment proceedings and other White House scandals. Davis went on to conduct a successful private practice in public relations and crisis communications, including publishing several books on how to publicly respond to a crisis. He is now executive vice president of Levick, a PR/communications firm.

CARTHAGE — On Tuesday, more than 17 years after Bernie Tiede shot 81-year-old Marjorie Nugent in the back and tucked her body under potpies in a deep freezer, a judge released him on bond, agreeing with lawyers that his life sentence should be reduced. But his release comes with strict conditions, among them that he live in the Austin garage apartment of his moviemaking benefactor, Richard Linklater, and receive counseling for sexual abuse. State district Judge Diane DeVasto agreed to allow Tiede´s release after she heard evidence that sexual abuse he suffered as a child contributed to his crime and

The Republican drive to capture the Senate in the 2014 midterm election got a significant boost Tuesday in North Carolina with the victory of house speaker Thom Tillis in the GOP Senate primary. Tillis will face Democratic senator Kay Hagan in the November election. With unprecedented help from outside groups—American Crossroads, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Rifle Association—Tillis got 45 percent of the vote, defeating two major challengers and averting a potentially destructive runoff election. Omaha, Neb.- After 15 years in storage, a Dutch painting long slighted in the academic literature dramatically returned to public display on Monday at this city´s Joslyn Art Museum as an authenticated work of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). The "Portrait of Dirck van Os" (c.1658) was recently confirmed as a work of the master by the world´s foremost authority on Rembrandt, Amsterdam University professor Ernst van de Wetering, following conservation efforts to remove extensive repainting and layers of discolored varnish that previously obscured the picture´s original paint surface. Last November, when the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) proposed moderating years of escalating mandates by reducing the amount of ethanol that must be mixed into gasoline, a top ethanol lobbyist seemed perplexed. "We´re all just sort of scratching our heads here today and wondering why this administration is telling us to burn less of a clean-burning American fuel," Bob Dineen, head of the Renewable Fuels Association, told The New York Times. Here are a few possible reasons why: America´s ethanol requirement destroys the environment, damages car engines, increases gas prices, and contributes to the starvation of the global poor. Texas Is Permanently Shutting Abortion Clinics

When Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed a sweeping anti-abortion law in 2013, he did so knowing the measure faced an uncertain future. Indeed, the law is already winding its way through the legal system, and if its opponents have their way, Texas´s reproductive legal code will land in the hands of the Supreme Court. But such a decision is likely a year or years a way, and back in the Lone Star State, the final judicial score won´t much matter. The law has already had tremendous success in closing abortion clinics and restricting abortion access in Texas. And those successes appear all

An immense explosion has been heard throughout the northern Iranian city of Qazvin, semi-official Fars news agency reported, and many casualties are expected from the blast. Around 1.1 million people live in the city, which is located about 100 miles north of Tehran. The blast may be related to nuclear development in Iran, according to the Los Angeles Times. Iranian officials in the past have strongly denied claims by Mujahedin Khalq Organization, or MKO, a cult-like Iranian exile group, that it has a secret nuclear enrichment facility in Abyek, near the major city, according to the daily. But Mousie, thou art no thy lane, In proving foresight may be vain: The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men Gang aft agley. So wrote the 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns. He could have had the Affordable Care Act in mind. I say that because after President Obama announced that more than seven million (and later more than eight million) Americans had signed up on federal or state exchanges for coverage, the assumption among the White House, liberals, and the elite media was that public opinion would begin to shift rapidly in favor of Obamacare. Conservatives need to wake up and start thinking past the rapidly passing age of Obama. Increasingly likely every day is that voters this November will remove Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader. By electing a new Republican Senate majority, the voters will also render Barack Obama a lame duck, one of the lamest in history, as he will have no prayer of getting any of his legislative proposals — increasingly recognized as hard left — through Congress. (Despite his early national rhetoric, Obama doesn’t do bipartisanship.) That new Republican Senate majority will also be a new check and balance on Obama’s

Today, the House Rules Committee is considering a resolution recommending that former IRS official Lois Lerner be held in contempt for refusing to answer questions about her role in the IRS targeting of President Obama’s political opponents. It is likely that the resolution will pass, and then it will come to the floor for a full vote in the House. When it does, the vote to hold Lerner in contempt should be bipartisan – if not unanimous. Any Democrats who vote “no” should be labeled as enablers of obstruction of justice. It should be impossible for Democrats to defend a

Former Deputy CIA Director Mike Morell is sworn recently by the House Select Intelligence Committee. "The analysts said from the get-go that al-Qaida was involved in (the Benghazi) attack," Morell testified. Why is Benghazi important to Americans? You´ll hear a lot about Benghazi in coming days and you´ll hear the familiar screeching of partisan politics, now that House Speaker John Boehner has decided to convene a select committee to investigate the 2012 terrorist attack in that dusty fly-bitten town in Libya. If the past is any guide, you´ll hear Republican righteous vindictiveness and Democratic mockery and defensiveness. There will be so many politicians

Hillary Clinton has mostly steered clear of contentious domestic political issues in recent years, but on Tuesday, she said gun laws need to be reined in. Speaking at a National Council for Behavioral Health conference outside of Washington, Clinton was asked about the role guns play in suicides. While Clinton said she supports Second Amendment rights, she added that there needs to be a proper trade-off between safety and freedom, and that things have swung too far toward the latter. "I think again we´re way out of balance. We´ve got to rein in what has become almost an article of faith that

WASHINGTON — Thom Tillis won the GOP Senate nomination North Carolina on Tuesday, delivering a big win to establishment Republicans over Tea Party insurgents. Tillis, speaker of the North Carolina House, easily got over the 40% threshold needed to avoid a runoff in the closely watched Senate primary. Obstetrician Greg Brannon, who had the support of Tea Party favorite Rand Paul, was coming in second in the eight-person field as results were being reported by the Associated Press. The North Carolina Senate race was the first primary contest pitting the Tea Party and grass-roots conservatives vs. mainstream Republicans. The skirmishes will

Nancy Pelosi issued a statement this morning on the soon-to-be-formed House Select Committee to investigate Benghazi. Byron York comments: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is complaining that the new select committee on Benghazi will have more Republican members than Democrats. “If this review is to be fair, it must be truly bipartisan,” Pelosi said in a just-released statement. “The panel should be equally divided between Democrats and Republicans, as is done on the House Ethics Committee.” Is that a reasonable request? He is also wants to see reception of his wife and family, who they said are not keen on him running. Two teenagers were shot and killed while carrying out a home invasion in Sacramento, California. The suspects are 16-year-old Steven Crider and his 14-year-old accomplice Michael Sambrano. The Sacramento neighborhood had witnessed a rash of automobile and property crime, including a burglary on Easter Sunday of the very home where the teenagers were shot. Fingerprints taken from the scene of that crime match those of one of the dead teens. After that burglary, 68-year-old Alice Hubbard Gordinho asked her brother Brently Hubbard, who is in his 70s, to protect her. When the teens returned to the scene of the crime
