Poachers take chunks from California
redwoods, put majestic trees at risk

CNN, by Jack Hannah

Original Article

Tree poaching conjures up the lawless Amazon jungle, but America´s magnificent redwood forests now face a piecemeal but steady assault by poachers too, California officials say. Thieves are cutting massive chunks from the base of the champion trees, which are the tallest on Earth and are up to 2,000 years old. While state officials say the damage is far from any Amazonian deforestation, they do rank the desecration alongside elephant tusk poaching. Under the cloak of darkness, bandits are poaching the burl from the old-growth redwoods in Redwood National and State Parks in California, and that lumpy feature from the tree base

LAUREL, Mississippi -- Defeated Tea Party U.S. Senate candidate Chris McDaniel issued a statement Wednesday afternoon indicated a challenge of Tuesday night´s results from his Republican runoff with Sen. Thad Cochran was still a possibility. "The conservative movement is alive in Mississippi," McDaniel said. "The Republicans who voted last night made it clear they´re looking for conservative change in Mississippi. "But the results also tell another story," McDaniel continued. "They tell the story of some members of our party who are willing to engage in tactics unbecoming of the party of Ronald Reagan. It´s no wonder so many conservatives don´t feel welcome

As the Army continues to investigate whether Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is guilty of deserting his unit, this afternoon they said there is no reason to believe that Bergdahl engaged in any misconduct during his five years in captivity. In fact, that´s all that the Army said: We have no reason to believe that he engaged in any misconduct." Bergdahl electrified the national discourse last month after he was freed in a prisoner swap involving five members of the Taliban held at Guantanamo Bay. As charges against his character emerged, the narrative quickly shifted from Bergdahl as POW to Bergdahl as despicable deserter, unworthy

Rand Paul’s Idea to Force

Felons Really Is Unconstitutional
National Review Online, by Roger Clegg    Original Article

I’m gratified that Senator Paul responded to my criticism of the constitutionality of his plan for a federal bill to reenfranchise some felons, but I’m afraid that his response is quite unpersuasive. Senator Paul seems to think that states can decide who votes in state elections but that the federal government has the final say on who can vote in federal elections, but that is just not true. The U.S. Constitution itself explicitly gives the authority to decide who votes in federal elections to the states (consistent, of course, with other constitutional guarantees, like the prohibition of poll taxes). And the

Lois Lerner, the controversial director of the tax-exempt organizations division at the Internal Revenue Service, has a long sordid history of targeting conservatives. Under the direction of Lois Lerner, the Federal Election Commission sued the Christian Coalition in the 1990s. She harassed the Christian Coalition for three election cycles. Eventually, she lost her case. At one point Lerner even asked a targeted conservative if Pat Robertson prayed over him. (Sound familiar?) In 1996, while at the FEC, Lois Lerner harassed Republican Senate candidate Al Salvi and made him this outrageous offer, “Promise me you will never run for office again, and

The federal government has spent nearly $5 billion to establish federal and state exchanges for Obamacare, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS). The funding was provided by a section of the Affordable Care Act that allowed for “indefinite” funding at the discretion of the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). “The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is incurring significant administrative costs to support [federally-facilitated exchanges] FFE operations,” the report, which was released earlier this month, said. According to CMS, the government spent $456 million to support “exchange operations” between fiscal years 2010 and 2012, before the

Senator Thad Cochran´s narrow victory over Chris McDaniel in the Mississippi Senate runoff deprives Democrats of their argument that Republicans are beholden to the Tea Party wing of their party. But it offers them some optimism that African-American voters will show up in healthy numbers for the midterm elections, given that they made the difference in a Republican runoff in a deeply conservative state. There was clear evidence that Cochran´s attempt to boost Democratic African-American turnout paid off in a big way. In Jackson´s Hinds County, where two-thirds of the population is black, Cochran won 73 percent of the

It is objectively true that Clinton’s “dead broke” comment earned her mockery from political analysts and allies alike. An empirical analysis of the political landscape would force any competent observer to concede that the former secretary of state has spent the last two weeks performing damage control in the effort to limit the fallout from that comment. Even former President Bill Clinton was forced to defend his wife’s claim from the censure of fact-checkers. Those center-left media personalities who do not thrive on the crafting Slate-like, absurdly counter-intuitive takes, have observed the obvious: Clinton’s week has been an atrocious one.

But Shaheen has also had a family financial stake in the research. Lankford now becomes the prohibitive favorite to replace outgoing Senator Tom Coburn, who is retiring with two years remaining in his current term. Thad Cochran’s political resurrection began with a campaign shakeup and ended with a Hail Mary television ad. Just three weeks ago, in the dead of night on June 3, the Mississippi senator’s staff sat shaken and dejected, crestfallen at the results of a primary that deprived the six-term incumbent of an electoral majority. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.Yet almost immediately, the Cochran coalition began bouncing back. Even on that gloomy night of June 3, Cochran adviser Stuart Stevens was insisting to staffers: “We’re

National conservative groups are angry after incumbent Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran pulled off a victory in the state’s GOP run-off — likely because of his campaign’s outreach to Democratic voters. “It’s disgraceful that self-described GOP leaders like Mitch McConnell, John McCain, the Chamber of Commerce and the NRSC would champion a campaign platform of pork barrel spending and insider deal-making, while recruiting Democrats to show up at the polls,” Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks said after the results came in. Tuesday’s closely-watched run-off came after conservative state Sen. Chris McDaniel edged Cochran in votes in the initial election earlier this month.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has had a rough time of it ever since she asserted that both she and her husband were “dead broke” and “struggled” after leaving the White House in 2001. “A few weeks before they left the White House, the Clintons were able to muster a cash down payment of $855,000 and secure a $1.995 million mortgage,” Politifact observed. “This hardly fits the common meaning of ‘dead broke.’” Clinton might have taken the public backlash over this minor gaffe in stride, but she didn’t.
