White House looking for new ways

Washington Post, by Zachary A. Goldfarb & Juliet Eilperin

When most Americans turn on their televisions at night, they expect their meteorologists to get the forecast right, or at least try. That level of trust is one reason President Obama and his staff spent hours Tuesday giving top weather forecasters the royal treatment — a briefing in the Roosevelt Room with multiple Cabinet secretaries and senior officials on a major new report on climate change, plus Rose Garden interviews with the president. It was the White House’s latest attempt to penetrate a polarized media climate where Americans increasingly read and view — consciously and unconsciously — material that matches their

Well, the Weather Channel was in full form this morning, including replays of excerpts of obama’s “Global Warming” speech. Al Roker has his most serious face on. “We must do something, even at the local level.” Head shaking, doom and gloom. Pictures of waves crashing with warnings of rising sea levels.

Once the “Weather on the eight’s” radar comes and goes, so do I….to another channel.

But I thought that weather and climate are two different things; especially when weather refuses to comport with all the dire climate predictions.

After previously saying America’s borders are more secure than ever, the White House on Tuesday seemingly blamed Republicans for apparent holes along the southern boundary, evidenced by the flood of unaccompanied children streaming into the U.S. from Mexico, Central America and elsewhere. White House press secretary Josh Earnest challenged Republicans, if they are truly concerned about border security, to back the comprehensive immigration reform package that passed the Senate last year and is strongly supported by President Obama. “If we really wanted to solve this problem, one good way to do it is for those Republicans to get on board

State officials in Mississippi are warning groups backing state Sen. Chris McDaniel that their efforts to organize poll watchers for Tuesday´s runoff might be illegal. Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), the underdog in his primary runoff fight with McDaniel, has been pushing African-American and Democratic voters to turn out for him on Tuesday to try to expand his share of the vote. Under state law, Democrats who did not vote in the first primary round are allowed to vote in the GOP runoff, but conservatives backing McDaniel have argued the law prevents voters from supporting a candidate in the primary that

Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday predicted the United States would not make it out of the next decade without another terrorist attack, likely much bigger than 9/11. Cheney, who has made a similar warning a number of times before, said the threat might come from a nuclear device. "I think there will be another attack. And next time, I think it’s likely to be far deadlier than the last one," Cheney told radio host Hugh Hewitt. SAN FRANCISCO — Brian Goggin perched on the blue sofa that hung halfway off the roof. He looked down one last time on his guerrilla art masterpiece, "Defenestration," that had become one of the city´s unlikeliest icons. More than 17 years ago, Goggin and an army of artists had transformed the four-story, dilapidated building below him by attaching a menagerie of furniture to the sides, creating the illusion of objects being flung into the air. It was a physical manifestation of the word "defenestration," which means "a throwing of a person or thing out of a window." There was the

Former President Bill Clinton on Tuesday defended his wife’s modest depiction of the couple’s wealth, saying their affluence does not mean Hillary Rodham Clinton is out of touch with the concerns of average Americans. Speaking in Denver at an annual meeting of his philanthropic organization, Clinton said his wife was correct to state they were “dead broke” when the couple left the White House in 2000. “We were several million dollars in debt,” Clinton said, as Hillary Clinton and their daughter, Chelsea, looked on. The family’s wealth, which has grown enormously since the end of Clinton’s presidency, has become a political

To start with, it’s an old-fashioned pen for old-fashioned paper, so I can still scribble my notes the way I always have. ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” the song goes. It is easy enough to spell, but for some vocal critics of President Barack Obama, it seems exceedingly hard to do. As the president moves toward the land of the lame ducks, his political enemies are calling for blood. That’s no shocker at this stage of a presidency. In this case, the cuts go deeper. For some, it is not enough to disagree. Some high-status public figures seem determined to demean, denigrate and ridicule the president of the United States. On June 12 the Speaker of the U.S. House stepped to a podium and insulted Obama for his handling of

Noted management expert and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen was apparently called out of retirement — like the Ted Williams of evasive, unapologetic bureaucrats — to destroy what is left of his agency’s credibility. At immediate issue is two years of subpoenaed e-mails from former IRS official Lois Lerner to outside agencies, lost in a convenient computer crash. The possible involvement of other agencies is one focus of a congressional investigation into the heightened IRS scrutiny of conservative nonprofit groups before the 2012 election. In recent congressional testimony, Koskinen admitted that the e-mails

There are times that I have senior moments and forget certain names and events but after the recent Obama Iraq war implosion, I´m convinced most political pundits are suffering from them as well. What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. They now suggest that it was a wrong decision whereas my complaint is that we took too long to invade and oust Saddam Hussein.

Women vote Democrat because they are smarter, Obama said to a White House audience Monday afternoon. He made the remark at the end of a talk at the White House Summit on Working Families. “Somebody asked: ‘Well, it’s well-known that women are more likely to vote for Democrats,’ to which I said, women are smarter,” Obama said. “This is true.” The rest of Obama’s talk centered on paid maternity leave, a minimum wage of $10.10, flexibility in the workplace, and access to childcare. US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Iraq´s capital, Baghdad as Sunni insurgents expand their control of towns across north-western Iraq. In Egypt on Sunday, Mr Kerry warned that Sunni militants Isis´ "ideology of violence and repression is a threat not only to Iraq but to the entire region". On Sunday rebels--spearheaded by Isis militants--captured border crossings to Syria and Jordan. The strategically important airport in the northern Tal Afar has also fallen. The town controls the main road from the Syrian border to Mosul, Iraq´s second biggest city, which was captured by the rebels two weeks ago.
