City halts ride-sharing company´s
foray into Chicago airports

Chicago Tribune, by Jon Hilkevitch

Original Article

Posted By:AltaD, 5/6/2014 5:44:53 PM

A ride-share company’s attempt to make an inroad into the lucrative Chicago airport market has been knocked down after briefly being up and running, city officials said Tuesday. Uber X sent a message to its drivers on Friday telling them that “effective immediately,’’ passenger pickups were allowed at O’Hare International and Midway airports.(Snip) Uber X spokeswoman Lauren Altmin told the Tribune on Tuesday: “At the request of the city, Uber X partners are not currently picking up at either airport, despite both O´Hare and Midway desperately needing additional transportation options.’’

Comments:
Record crime and unemployment but the mayor and the alderman focus on banning plastic grocery bags and ride-share businesses.

Potholes linger and grow.

If you want to see fast action by a city, threaten their taxi medallion kickbacks.

There´s a subway into O´Hare, (remember the crash a month or so ago). I think the first couple stops out of the airport are in suburbs. It would be easy to take the subway and then get off and pick up a ride at one of those stops. And avoid the City´s action.

At least 20 people have been wounded in shootings across the city since the evening of Fourth of July. The shootings include an incident in which police shot and killed a suspected gang member in Portage Park and an incident in West Englewood in which suburban teenagers riding in a car may have been mistaken as gang members. Additionally, there was a Mayfair shooting in which a bullet fell on a man´s head during what may have been a July 4th celebration. In other shootings:

Chicago to ask for temporary halt of

Chicago Tribune, by Mary Ellen Podmolik    Original Article

Chicago is calling for a six-month moratorium on conversions of single-room occupancy hotels and residential hotels while it tries to figures out how to regulate the gentrification that has put thousands of very-low-income housing units at risk. An ordinance that would prohibit for six months the issuance of any city building permits for the demolition or conversion of the buildings is expected to be introduced at Wednesday’s City Council meeting by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and several aldermen. The moratorium would prevent almost all conversion projects, whether it was to a residential, non-residential, commercial or industrial use.

Police call it Terror Town, a 2-block by 4-block patch of South Shore where apparent gang conflicts have erupted into three mass shootings in a little over two years. The latest occurred Monday evening when a gunman walked up to a strip mall on East 79th Street and fired into a crowd, wounding six people, including two boys ages 14 and 16. All are expected to survive. Police have made no arrests but they are looking into whether the boys, the youngest victims of the shooting, may have been the targets. They are believed to be members of a Gangster

Former Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner writes in his memoir, released Monday, that Illinois Republican Mark Kirk was “delusional” in warning the Chinese not to buy U.S. debt — but a source who was actually at that meeting Kirk had with Chinese officials told me that Geithner, who was not present, got it wrong. Kirk’s long-held view is that Geithner — along with a host of administration officials up to President Barack Obama and many members of Congress — is crazy not to be more concerned about runaway U.S. spending. As temperatures plunged to 16 below zero in Chicago in early January and set record lows across the eastern U.S., electrical system managers implored the public to turn off stoves, dryers and even lights or risk blackouts. A fifth of all power-generating capacity in a grid serving 60 million people went suddenly offline, as coal piles froze, sensitive electrical equipment went haywire and utility operators had trouble finding enough natural gas to keep power plants running.(Snip)"Everywhere you turn, there are proposals and regulations to make prices go higher," said Daniel Kish, senior vice president at the Institute for Energy Research.

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´."
