Prayer in the Public Square
Wall Street Journal, by Editorial

The Supreme Court did a good turn for religious freedom on Monday, ruling that prayer is permitted at government meetings and doesn´t amount to an endorsement of religion. The disconcerting surprise is that the decision was only 5-4. Greece v. Galloway dealt with a challenge to the town of Greece, New York´s practice of opening its council meetings with a prayer. This being America in the Year of Our Lord 2014, two women sued, claiming to be offended because the clergy invited to read an invocation were predominantly Christian. The High Court ruled that such a legislative prayer is part

The Godless progressives on the Supreme Court lost this time. I hope we can maintain this ratio until a GOP president is elected.

On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed and the door to the United States of America opened even wider. Nobler pens than mine have graced this event with prose, but I think it is worthwhile to reflect that however impossible the American Dream might seem to us today, it seemed a great deal less plausible to the Founding Fathers then. I defer to John Adams, who penned the following letter (shown here in part) to his wife, Abigail, describing the tumultuous events he helped orchestrate. Adams´s view that July 2 would be a day of celebration

Higher education is no longer just for kids in the top quarter or the top half of the class. College is for everyone," First lady Michelle Obama told a gathering of school counselors in Florida on Tuesday. "Every student in this country needs some higher education, whether that´s two-year degree, a four-year degree, or professional training of some sort." Mrs. Obama went to the annual meeting of the American School Counselor Association in Florida to thank counselors for taking on a demanding job without the resources necessary to meet the challenges. They, in turn, made her an honorary school counselor.

Facebook´s recent study of “emotional contagion” stirred debate among researchers and in social media about whether the company went too far by tinkering with some unwitting users’ news feeds. In fact, Facebook has been using algorithms to compile and show people posts since the earlier days of the news feed, which was introduced in 2006. Facebook says it is trying to show us the stuff that is most relevant and that without intervention we would be overwhelmed by the updates. Anytime someone logs in, it says, they could see on average 1,500 posts. Facebook says the news feed will display

SAN ANTONIO — The Army said Wednesday that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the American POW who was released in a prisoner swap with the Taliban, has gone off the post in San Antonio for dinner and other excursions, and that he has been welcomed by those he meets. So far, Bergdahl has taken about 10 trips off Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston as part of a carefully staged plan to help reintegrate him into society. “I can´t give you specifics, just because I don´t want people camping out at those places, but he´s gone to restaurants, he´s gone to supermarkets,

SAN ANTONIO - A South Texas man reeled in the largest red snapper ever recorded off the Texas coast. Joey Beaver, of Victoria, bagged a 40-inch, 38.75 pound red snapper about five miles off the coast of Port O´Connor, a small fishing community between Corpus Christi and Galveston, in the Gulf of Mexico on June 1. "I thought it was a shark or something the way it was pulling," said Beaver, 28. "When I got it on the boat after about 20 minutes, it was crazy, everybody on the boat was going nuts." Americans are in a period of amazingly negative thinking about the state of our country. A recent Gallup analysis drove home how deep and how threatening the current mood is. Gallup asked Americans in early June how much confidence they had in our nation´s institutions. The answer: not much. Only 30% had "a great deal" or "quite a lot of confidence" in the Supreme Court. Just 29% felt that way about the presidency. And an abysmal 7% had faith in the Congress. Think about what this means. Our most trusted national institution, the unelected Supreme Court, has the confidence of

This Quinnipiac poll, released today, is getting a lot of press. Understandably so: Quinnipiac polled 1,446 registered voters nationwide, and a plurality of 33% tagged Barack Obama as the worst president since World War II. Such historical ratings are always biased toward the recent past, of course; 28% said George W. Bush was the worst. In a head-to-head comparison with Bush, 40% say Obama is worse, while 39% think Obama is better than his immediate predecessor. In a re-run of the 2012 election, 45% now say the country would be better off if Mitt Romney were president, while 38% think

In a couple of days, Americans will fire off fireworks, drink beer, grill meats and celebrate the Fourth of July — America’s birthday. What is the Fourth of July all about? It’s not the date on which the United States actually won its freedom. It’s Independence Day, right? But independence from whom? Fourth of July is the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the document in which the United States of America declared itself independent from King George III and the Britain that he ruled. Prior to that, we were British colonies. The Declaration of Independence declares America’s

Among those employees, 18,709 of them earn a salary of $180,000 or more. An OPM database, FedScope, contains historical data on the federal civilian workforce going back to 1998. Outside of country, there isn’t much music being made about America anymore. Oh, pop music is still filled with references. America’s favorite problem child, Miley Cyrus, turns up in nearly every 4th of July playlist with “Party In The U.S.A.” and Katy Perry’s “Firework” has also become an Independence Day party anthem. But Cyrus’ song mentions nothing American, except the “fame excess” of Hollywood. “Firework” just uses the 4th of

A federal consumer protection agency is spending more money per square foot to renovate its Washington D.C. headquarters than it cost to build the Trump World Tower or Las Vegas’s Bellagio Hotel — and the project’s budget continues to grow. That’s the House Financial Services Committee interpretation of a Federal Reserve’s Office of the Inspector General report that found that the cost to renovate the headquarters for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is now estimated to be $215.8 million. That is a significant increase from 2010´s initial cost estimate of $55 million and double last year’s upwardly revised estimate

A government-contracted security force threatened to arrest doctors and nurses if they divulged any information about the contagion threat at a refugee camp housing illegal alien children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, sources say. In spite of the threat, several former camp workers broke their confidentiality agreements and shared exclusive details with me about the dangerous conditions at the camp. They said taxpayers deserve to know about the contagious diseases and the risks the children pose to Americans. I have agreed to not to disclose their identities because they fear retaliation and prosecution.

Megyn Kelly faced off with former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers in an explosive interview tonight in which Kelly repeatedly confronted Ayers about bombings and killings that the radical group was reportedly involved in. Kelly asked Ayers how many bombings he was personally responsible for. Ayers declined to answer, but did acknowledge the “terrible risk” they took with some of their more out-there tactics. Kelly grilled him on how the Weather Underground “declared a state of war against the U.S. government” and encouraged violence. Kelly went through a series of instances in which the Weather Underground was tied to bombings and killings,

A crowd of 300 angry protestors forced three buses carrying 140 undocumented migrant children and their parents to turn around in Murrieta, California, on Tuesday after they blocked the road. The dramatic confrontation between the flag waving protestors and the Homeland Security buses came one day after Mayor Alan Long urged residents to resist the federal government´s plan to transfer the Central American migrants to California to ease overcrowding of facilities along the Texas-Mexico border. Holding up banners that said ´Return to Sender´ and suggesting the children should be sent to the White House instead, the irate protestors succeeded when the buses

Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the nationally followed Hobby Lobby case. The for-profit corporations that brought these cases to the Supreme Court—a craft store and a cabinet manufacturer—argued that the corporations’ religious convictions should excuse them from compensating their employees through the comprehensive health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers sought to exclude insurance coverage of several forms of birth control because, contrary to medical and scientific evidence, the corporations’ owners believe some birth control causes abortions. The Affordable Care Act already includes special arrangements for houses of worship and religious non-profits, like schools and hospitals. Houses

The Israeli Air Force carried out what it called "precision strikes" on 34 "terror targets" in the Gaza Strip overnight, after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped in the West Bank earlier this month. The Israeli Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to rockets being launched earlier into Israel from Gaza. The waves of rockets from Gaza and IDF retaliations have picked up since the teens were kidnapped and the Israeli crackdown began. Hamas has not claimed responsibility for launching the rockets but Israel holds them responsible for everything coming out of Gaza. The Israel Defense
