Ben Rhodes’s brother, the day after

Ben Rhodes’s brother is of course David Rhodes, the president of CBS News — although, if you’re a CBS viewer, maybe I shouldn’t assume that you know that. Anyway, a nifty catch here by John Sexton of Breitbart. The key bit comes 50 seconds in. Quote: “Our government thinks that, you know, there’s a really good chance this was not just a spontaneous mob reaction to what some thought was an offensive film but actually a coordinated effort timed to the 9/11 anniversary.” Two days later, Sexton reminds us, Ben Rhodes sent out an e-mail ahead of Susan Rice’s Sunday show appearances

It´s Not Racist to Hate Government

As Marge Schott-impersonator Donald Sterling and honorary professor of Afro-American Studies Cliven Bundy could tell you, nothing writes you out of polite society more quickly than being outed as a racist. Which may be one of the reasons that politically savvy Democrats are never slow to equate advocates of limiting the size, scope, and spending of the federal government with racism, slavery, and white supremacy. Who can blame them, really? Even after the “success” of Obamacare, the president somehow has managed to chalk up his lowest approval ratings ever, and things don’t look so good for the Donkey Party in the

Release Obama’s Benghazi

President Obama claims he was only repeating what the intelligence community told him when his administration asserted that the attack in Benghazi began with a spontaneous protest inspired by an Internet video. If that’s the case, there is a simple way to prove it: Give the new congressional select committee investigating Benghazi his daily intelligence briefings that show exactly what he was told. There is precedent for doing so. In 2004, at the request of the 9/11 Commission, President George W. Bush declassified and publicly released the President’s Daily Brief (PDB) delivered to him before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist

CBS News and 60 Minutes became the center of controversy last year when it turned out that they had aired a segment on the 2012 Benghazi attacks with a witness who had later discredited himself in contradictory testimony to the FBI. The segment’s reporter Lara Logan took a leave of absence, and the network began an investigation of what went wrong with the flagship newsmagazine show’s editorial process. And now, ThinkProgress reports that CBS seems to have requested that journalistic document database LexisNexis remove all traces of the infamous segment’s transcript. When one attempts to search in the Lexis database for the

Newly revealed documents cast a doubtful glare on where exactly Republican Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran calls home. The documents, as first reported by Breitbart, show that since 2003, Cochran repeatedly lists an address owned by an aide as his primary residence. His campaign claimed that his primary residence was instead a self-described “cabin” in Oxford, MS, but on formal documents, Cochran identified that residence in 2006 and 2010 as a second home. The primary residence that Cochran lists in D.C. is located near the Capitol and is an apartment in an austere row-house condominium. The owner of the home is listed as

Fifteen years ago this spring, I walked through the doors of a gleaming new postmodern sanctuary on New York’s Upper West Side. Known as Makor, this nightclub-cum-gallery billed itself as a secular Jewish arts-and-culture mecca for New York’s young hipsters. Its leaders promised to rebrand Judaism for the age of world music and poetry slams. If its name doesn’t ring a bell, that’s because Makor quietly shut down in 2006. Despite an infusion of cash and a friendly takeover by the 92nd Street Y, its graying great aunt, the cultural center could not survive. Makor’s fate came to mind recently as

Supreme Court: Opening prayers

The Supreme Court has upheld the right of local officials to open town council meetings with prayer, ruling that this does not violate the Constitution even if the prayers routinely stress Christianity. The court said in a 5-4 decision Monday that the content of the prayers is not critical as long as officials make a good-faith effort at inclusion. The ruling was a victory for the town of Greece, N.Y., outside of Rochester. "The prayer opportunity in this case must be evaluated against the backdrop of historical practice," the majority wrote in its opinion. "As a practice that has long endured, legislative prayer

Ken Paxton was a small-town lawyer with no other business interests or sources of income before he was elected to the Legislature. But since he joined the House in 2003, Paxton — now a Republican McKinney state senator running for attorney general — has started or become part of 28 business ventures, state records show. They range from a cellphone tower company to an outfit that puts cameras in police cars. And his companies frequently trade in real estate. Paxton, like other members of the Legislature, has voted on measures that could affect his personal holdings. State ethics law requires

The legal left and media are always last to know, but there are the makings of a correction in how the courts police conflicts between the political branches. President Obama´s serial executive power abuses—on health care, immigration, marijuana and much else—may be inspiring a heathy rejoinder. Under the Constitution, Congress is supposed to create and amend laws and the President to faithfully execute them, but Mr. Obama has grabbed inherent Article I powers by suspending or rewriting statutes he opposes. The President has usurped Congress with impunity because he assumes no one has the legal standing to challenge him.

There is something odd about the global-warming debate — or the climate-change debate, as we are now expected to call it, since global warming has for the time being come to a halt. I have never shied away from controversy, nor — for example, as chancellor of the exchequer — worried about being unpopular if I believed that what I was saying and doing was in the public interest. But I have never in my life experienced the extremes of personal hostility, vituperation, and vilification that I — along with other dissenters, of course — have received for my views on global

Schneider’s statement came in a report published April 28 in the journal Comparative Strategy. Amal Alamuddin is representing Abdullah al-Senussi who is accused of a string of human rights abuses dating back to the 2011 Arab-spring uprising and civil war which unseated Gaddafi. But while few people doubt that Senussi is guilty, the International Criminal Court´s decision to allow the case to be heard in Libya has sparked a firestorm of controversy that threatens to tarnish its reputation. Letts has no such guilt. She recalls the procedure with fondness. She even describes it as “birth-like,” and said it made her feel good, just like giving birth would. Letts, whose job involves encouraging women to have abortions, sees her own abortion as an entirely positive experience, and hopes the video will prove to be both instructional and morally

A Democratic member of the House intelligence committee called Sunday for his party to boycott the newly announced committee tasked with probing the Benghazi attacks, dismissing new evidence that Republicans have called a "smoking gun" showing the White House politicized the tragedy. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told "Fox News Sunday" that Democrats should not give the select committee more "credibility" by joining. "I think it´s a colossal waste of time," he said. "I don´t think it makes sense, really, for Democrats to participate." Schiff, calling the committee a "tremendous red herring," acknowledged he doesn´t know what

The news for Democrats, already bad this year, just got worse. Consider this story in the USA Today: A nationwide USA TODAY/Pew Research Center Poll shows the strongest tilt to Republican candidates at this point in a midterm year in at least two decades, including before partisan “waves” in 1994 and 2010 that swept the GOP into power. Though Election Day is six months away — a lifetime in politics — at the moment, Democrats are saddled by angst over the economy, skepticism about the health care law and tepid approval of the president. The specific data point worth focusing on is

CONCORD, N.H. – The first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church has announced he is divorcing his husband. Retired Bishop Gene Robinson announced that he is divorcing partner Mark Andrew in an email to the Diocese of New Hampshire Saturday and an article for The Daily Beast. The coupled entered into a civil union in 2008 that converted to a marriage when New Hampshire legalized gay marriage in 2010. His election in 2003 as the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church created an international uproar and led conservative Episcopalians to break away from the main church in

There was “no conspiracy” behind the White House’s decision not to release an internal email related to Benghazi until this week, but a “very loud, delusional minority” is driving the Republican Party to politicize the issue, former Obama White House senior adviser David Plouffe said today. “I think lawyers have spoken to this and it’s out there,” Plouffe, an ABC News contributor, said today on the “This Week” roundtable. “Benghazi was a tragedy. What we need to do is figure out how to prevent it from happening again and to try and hold those accountable as we did [Osama] bin Laden. It took a while, but after 11 years we did.”

The organization honored the 41st U.S. president with its 2014 Profile in Courage Award, praising the Republican leader´s "decision to put country above party and political prospects" in the deal with congressional Democrats.
