Chisinau, Moldova - Moldova´s government says it has placed the landlocked country´s borders on alert amid unrest in neighboring Ukraine. Top Moldovan leaders announced the move Monday in a joint statement after Ukrainian forces deployed an elite unit to the Ukrainian port of Odessa. Comments:
In case you don´t know it, our US Embassy is in that town. Will the state department be protecting the personnel and how? Of course. these aren´t Russian troops threatening neighboring countries, just militant activist.

Odessa & Slaviansk, Ukraine - Pro-Russian rebels shot down a Ukrainian helicopter in fierce fighting near the eastern town of Slaviansk on Monday, and Kiev drafted police special forces to the southwestern port city of Odessa to halt a feared westward spread of rebellion. Ukraine said the Odessa force, based on "civil activists", would replace local police who had failed to tackle rebel actions at the weekend. Its dispatch was a clear signal from Kiev that, while tackling rebellion in the east, it would vigorously resist any sign of a slide to a broader civil war. Odessa, with its ethnic mix from Russians to Ukrainians, Georgians to Tatars a cultural

"We are heartbroken beyond words at the loss of our beautiful, talented and determined Bally," Severino said in a statement.

Johannesburg - A Malawian housekeeper was staying at Oscar Pistorius´s house on the night Reeva Steenkamp was killed but “heard nothing” and will not be called by either the State or the defence team to give evidence in the athlete´s murder trial, it has emerged. Frank Chiziweni is understood to have slept in the domestic quarters next to Pistorius´ kitchen on the ground floor of his home on a security estate outside Pretoria. On the night Pistorius shot Steenkamp, neighbours living up to 170 metres away claimed they were woken by sounds of an argument, shots and screams then a man shouting for help.

An Aspirin a Day? Don´t

Taking an aspirin a day may help prevent heart attack or stroke in some people, but it’s not for everyone — and the common drug can have serious side effects that offset the benefits. That’s the reminder Monday from health officials at the federal Food and Drug Administration, who have finally told giant drugmaker Bayer Corp. not to expect the agency to give the go-ahead for labels listing aspirin as a drug for primary prevention of heart attacks and other problems. Instead, the recommendation for daily doses of therapeutic aspirin remains the same: It should be used only in people at high risk for heart attack and stroke, and then only under a doctor’s

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi said in an interview broadcast Sunday that criticism by conservative lawmakers against herself and the Obama administration only demonstrates that they are suffering from a “poverty of ideas.” Mrs. Pelosi said on MSNBC’s “Up with Steve Kornacki” that Republicans have spent hundreds of millions of dollars in launching personal attacks against her. “It means nothing to me,” she said. “I consider the source and I consider them to be stuck in a poverty of ideas. They have none, and that’s where they had to go.” “I think people are tired of that, they want to know ‘what are your ideas about job creation?’

AG Holder: "No such

In March of 2013, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder made what seemed like a startling admission in saying that large financial institutions had effectively become "too big to jail." As he told a Senate panel at the time, "I am concerned that the size of some of these institutions becomes so large that it does become difficult for us to prosecute them when we are hit with indications that if we do prosecute -- if we do bring a criminal charge -- it will have a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy. I think that is a function of the fact that some of these institutions have become too large."

New York - Target´s massive data breach has now cost the company´s CEO his job. Target announced Monday that Chairman, President and CEO Gregg Steinhafel is out nearly five months after the retailer disclosed the breach, which has hurt its reputation among customers and has derailed its business. The nation´s third-largest retailer said Steinhafel, a 35-year veteran of the company and CEO since 2008, has agreed to step down, effective immediately. He also resigned from the board of directors. A company spokesman declined to give specifics on when the decision was reached. The departure suggests the company is trying to start

Several dozen of what appeared to be Russian fighter jets have been spotted above the Moscow-controlled peninsula of Crimea, according to a report by the Agence France-Presse. The agency reported on Wednesday that President Vladimir Putin is poised to visit Crimea for a May 9 military parade to mark Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. A local aviation expert told AFP that he had sighted a number of planes, including “supersonic heavy strategic bombers and heavy military transport aircraft,” over the peninsula’s main city of Simferopol on Saturday. He told AFP he also saw refueling tankers and MiG-29 jets.

After the big names are off the board in the NFL Draft, the biggest question may not be when Michael Sam will be picked, it may be whether Michael Sam will be picked at all. Despite being named the Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC, Sam’s underwhelming physical measurables and his lack of a defined role in defenses could prevent him from being the first openly gay player selected in the draft. In a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel poll of 21 scouts, 12 said they wouldn’t draft Sam, while three said he should be taken in the fifth round, three said sixth round and three said seventh round. Seven of the scouts said they wouldn’t even sign

Free-speech supporters rallied outside a Silicon Valley high school Monday morning after the 9th Circuit Court upheld the school district’s decision to ban students from wearing American flags on Cinco de Mayo. About 30 people silently held American flags outside of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, the San Jose Mercury News reported. “No trespassing” signs and a large fence now surrounds the school, where a nationwide controversy erupted four years ago. Latino students had complained after four Live Oak students came to the school on the Mexican holiday wearing American flag T-shirts. Administrators told the students to turn

Make it go away! That was the message of the Obama administration and their friends in the media for the past two years, and now we know why: Benghazi is the scandal they always denied it was. Thanks to a lawsuit by watchdog group Judicial Watch, the administration last week released correspondence about the terrorist attack in Libya on Sept. 11, 2012 that left US ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others dead. One memo, from Ben Rhodes, the deputy national security director for strategic communications, shows how the administration was trying to spin the attack as something other than their

But while few people doubt that Senussi is guilty, the International Criminal Court´s decision to allow the case to be heard in Libya has sparked a firestorm of controversy that threatens to tarnish its reputation. CONCORD, N.H. – The first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church has announced he is divorcing his husband. Retired Bishop Gene Robinson announced that he is divorcing partner Mark Andrew in an email to the Diocese of New Hampshire Saturday and an article for The Daily Beast. The coupled entered into a civil union in 2008 that converted to a marriage when New Hampshire legalized gay marriage in 2010. His election in 2003 as the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church created an international uproar and led conservative Episcopalians to break away from the main church in

Biden acknowledged that he was addressing many immigrants and the children and grandchildren of immigrants, many from South America and the Caribbean. Biden said a "constant, substantial stream of immigrants" is important to the American economy, urging citizenship for immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. "That´s why we

There was “no conspiracy” behind the White House’s decision not to release an internal email related to Benghazi until this week, but a “very loud, delusional minority” is driving the Republican Party to politicize the issue, former Obama White House senior adviser David Plouffe said today. “I think lawyers have spoken to this and it’s out there,” Plouffe, an ABC News contributor, said today on the “This Week” roundtable. “Benghazi was a tragedy. What we need to do is figure out how to prevent it from happening again and to try and hold those accountable as we did [Osama] bin Laden. It took a while, but after 11 years we did.”
