The Democrats´ Dilemma on Benghazi

Though they may publicly deny that there is any scandal in the Obama administration’s response to the Benghazi attack on September 11, 2012, there must be doubts emerging, if only because we now know with certainty that a critical email was withheld in violation of a subpoena from the Issa Committee. Though most Democrats loathe Darrel Issa (and the entire Republican Party, for that matter), the expression “cover-up” is now in play, and the senior Congressional leadership of the party is old enough to remember the Watergate hearings, and the articles of impeachment that emerged from that process, authored in

Those who love rib-eye steaks and double-cream Brie will feel better about their guilty pleasures after reading Nina Teicholz’s article in this weekend’s Wall Street Journal, “The Questionable Link Between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease.” She writes, for example: Too much whole-grain oatmeal for breakfast and whole-grain pasta for dinner, with fruit snacks in between, add up to a less healthy diet than one of eggs and bacon, followed by fish. Gary Taubes covered some of the same ground in his excellent 2008 book, Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health. Taubes argued that that

Still Missing the Strategic

Strategy comes before tactics. Strategic goals dictate tactical actions. Today we are allowed to talk about the obvious tactical lies and malfeasances that the Obama administration blew in our faces in the Benghazi fiasco and its aftermath, but not about its strategic meaning. But Obama’s secret policies have also been exposed to public view with the Benghazi fiasco. It is now clear that since Obama came to power, the U.S. government has overturned all the fundamental values that have characterized American policy from Thomas Jefferson onward. Under Obama we have secretly joined the terrorist side in the Jihad War. That

There is a part of me that thought I was beyond being shocked by anything the high-living Obamas do. Somewhere deep down I believed that these people had to have a modicum of conscience at their core. To be honest, I secretly felt that at some point the gross excess would become a bit embarrassing and the Obamas’ orgy of self-indulgence would ease up a bit. Boy, was I wrong. Much to my astonishment, after chronicling all the travels and the affluent way of life enjoyed by the spoilt first lady, it turns out that while her husband was in

Former National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor appeared last night on Bret Baier’s Fox News Channel program Special Report, in an attempt at damage control, but only made things worse for the Obama Benghazi cover-up. Two pieces of actual news were generated, but perhaps the greatest damage was done by Vietor’s immature self-presentation, revealing the low level of qualifications necessary for high responsibility in the Obama White House. (snip) If you are wondering how someone so callow came to such a position, read this and weep. He started as a van driver.

There are a few conclusions to draw from Jay Carney’s performance yesterday before the White House press corps when responding to questions from ABC News’s Jonathan Karl on the Ben Rhodes email released by court order following a Judicial Watch lawsuit. The White House is desperate. Carney resorted to an easily provable lie that the email was about the Middle East situation in general, not about Benghazi. The email was released in response to a FOIA request on Benghazi, and discusses Benghazi specifically.(snip) The story is no longer a “Fox News Story”. The Obama media have attempted to dismiss the story as “over”

There is a phrase that floats around college campuses, Princeton being no exception, that threatens to strike down opinions without regard for their merits, but rather solely on the basis of the person that voiced them. “Check your privilege,” the saying goes, and I have been reprimanded by it several times this year. The phrase, handed down by my moral superiors, descends recklessly, like an Obama-sanctioned drone, and aims laser-like at my pinkish-peach complexion, my maleness, and the nerve I displayed in offering an opinion rooted in a personal Weltanschauung. “Check your privilege,” they tell me in a command that

If you ever wondered what the real political issue of the day is when it comes to presidential politics, an article in Politico gives you the answer. Wall Street Big Money wants a presidential candidate who will allow the financial games enabling hedge fund billionaires, investment banks, and other financial engineering specialists to continue their merry ways. This group dominates the top one percent of the top once percent of income earners – the people who have expanded their share of national income, while the rest of the one percent (and the rest of us) get to divvy up the

A celebrity gossip website posts a recording of a conversation between an allegedly racist, septuagenarian basketball team owner and a former 20-something girlfriend, and the President of the United States, 9,500 miles away in Malaysia, weighs in with another race speech? When asked about Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s conversation with someone named V. Stiviano, Obama jumped right into the question without any firsthand knowledge of the situation. The Harvard-trained lawyer based his opinion on the mainstream media news story which based its story on a gossip site. Did Obama speak to the parties involved before he commented on the incident?

Make it go away! That was the message of the Obama administration and their friends in the media for the past two years, and now we know why: Benghazi is the scandal they always denied it was. Thanks to a lawsuit by watchdog group Judicial Watch, the administration last week released correspondence about the terrorist attack in Libya on Sept. 11, 2012 that left US ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others dead. One memo, from Ben Rhodes, the deputy national security director for strategic communications, shows how the administration was trying to spin the attack as something other than their

A Democratic member of the House intelligence committee called Sunday for his party to boycott the newly announced committee tasked with probing the Benghazi attacks, dismissing new evidence that Republicans have called a "smoking gun" showing the White House politicized the tragedy. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told "Fox News Sunday" that Democrats should not give the select committee more "credibility" by joining. "I think it´s a colossal waste of time," he said. "I don´t think it makes sense, really, for Democrats to participate." Schiff, calling the committee a "tremendous red herring," acknowledged he doesn´t know what

CONCORD, N.H. – The first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church has announced he is divorcing his husband. Retired Bishop Gene Robinson announced that he is divorcing partner Mark Andrew in an email to the Diocese of New Hampshire Saturday and an article for The Daily Beast. MIAMI— Vice President Joe Biden extoled immigration as crucial to American innovation Saturday at a college graduation ceremony in South Florida. The Miami Dade College graduates from two campuses and their families, 2,000 strong, cheered as a procession of 39 flags from their home countries, entered the gym and opened the program. Biden said a "constant, substantial stream of immigrants" is important to the American economy, urging citizenship for immigrants living in the U.S. illegally. "That´s why we

A demand that Secretary of State John Kerry testify before Congress about his department´s compliance with requests for information about the Benghazi terrorist attack angered his spokesperson, who faulted lawmakers for failing to give him the opportunity to appear voluntarily. "Saturated fat does not cause heart disease"—or so concluded a big study published in March in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. How could this be? The very cornerstone of dietary advice for generations has been that the saturated fats in butter, cheese and red meat should be avoided because they clog our arteries. For many diet-conscious Americans, it is simply second nature to opt for chicken over sirloin, canola oil over butter. The new study´s conclusion shouldn´t surprise anyone familiar with modern nutritional science, however. The fact is, there has never been solid evidence for the idea that these

Team Obama has been describing this as an "old story" since before Hillary Clinton stood at that ceremony and repeated the "spontaneous video protest lie" right into the faces of the victims´ families. Hi, everybody. My number one priority as President is doing whatever I can to create more jobs and opportunity for hardworking families. And yesterday, we learned that businesses added 273,000 jobs last month. All told, our businesses have now created 9.2 million new jobs over 50 consecutive months of job growth. But we need to keep going — to create more good jobs, and give middle-class families a sense of security. And I want to work with Congress to do it. But so far this year, Republicans in Congress have blocked or voted down every serious idea to create jobs.

Every few months, some ordinary person arises from the undifferentiated swarm of Americans and is turned into the poster boy or the poster girl of some political battle du jour. This time it´s been Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who´s a scofflaw and deadbeat to the feds — who want him to pay $1 million in back fees owed for 20 years of lawless cattle grazing — and to his rancher neighbors, who have paid their super-cheap government fees all along. To the armed anti-government scores who have turned up at Bundy´s place to convince the world that contumaciousness is patriotic,
