X Still Marks Sunken Spot,
and Gold Awaits

New York Times, by William J. Broad

Original Article

The discovery of sunken gold conjures up visions of instant riches: Swiss bank accounts and lazy afternoons on faraway beaches, daiquiris in hand. But the quest to salvage the S.S. Central America — which went down in 1857 in a hurricane off South Carolina carrying 425 souls, as well as thousands of coins, bars and nuggets of California gold — has produced a quarter-century of broken dreams and legal nightmares. The bones of the side-wheeler were discovered in 1988, nearly a mile and a half down. The finder hauled up glittering coins and boasted of treasure worth $1 billion.

Comments:
I remember reading the book ´Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea´ where the ´hero´ hunts for the wreck for years and finally finds and recovers the treasure. Unfortunately he then rips off the investors and runs away with the money.

They should not have made the find public and just recovered it. There are always alot of weasels willing to take a sizable chunk of someone else´s good fortune.

The patent office goes out of bounds
in Redskins trademark case

The decision this past week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to rescind federal trademark protections for the Redskins may ultimately tip the balance in the controversy over the 80-year-old name of Washington’s football team. If so, that would be a shame. Not because there’s insufficient reason to consider the name “disparaging to Native Americans,” as the patent office determined. Many of us recoil at the reference to skin color as a team identity. The problem is that the Redskins case is just the latest example of a federal agency going beyond its brief to inappropriately insert itself in

A former Iowa State University scientist who admitted faking lab results to obtain millions in grant money for AIDS research has been charged with four felony counts of making false statements, an indictment filed in federal court shows. Dr. Dong Pyou Han left his job as an assistant professor and a laboratory manager at the university last year after admitting that he spiked rabbit blood with human antibodies that made it appear the animals´ immune systems were reacting to an AIDS vaccine being tested. In reality, the vaccine was having little effect, according to Han´s indictment. Before the fraud was

Ian Wright has spoken of the ´terrifying´ moment an armed gang held a Stanley knife to his wife´s throat and threatened to cut off her fingers before they fled with family possessions including the former Arsenal and England star´s MBE. The 50-year-old pundit had to cut short his work for ITV at the World Cup in Brazil to look after wife Nancy, 39, and their daughters, aged four and two, following the raid on Wednesday night. Wright went straight to a waiting car which whisked him back to his family after his 11-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro landed at

Clothes unmade the man. A former CNN employee claims he was fired because he’s gay and wore bright colors and mariachi outfits to work that were deemed “too flamboyant,” according to a $60 million discrimination lawsuit. William Kane, who started working at CNN in 2002, claims nobody at the news network ever informed him of a dress code or complained about the hot pink designer shirt he wore in his employee ID photo. Three armed men burst in through a back door of The Pit restaurant on Geer Street about 9 p.m. Sunday, demanding access to the safe. Out front, employees ushered about 20 guests to safety outside. “While our employees cleared out the guests, in the back the robbers were working with a manager to get into the safe,” said Greg Hatem, owner of the restaurant. “They were able to leave with a small cash box.” All in all, Hatem said, the robbers were in the restaurant for about two minutes. During the incident, two employees were hurt. One went to the hospital and was treated and released, he said. The other never sought medical attention.

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling repeatedly disparaged Magic Johnson´s HIV-positive status in an interview that aired Monday, saying he was not a fit role model for children and dismissing his work in business and charity. The interview with CNN´s Anderson Cooper was meant to be a mea culpa in Sterling´s first public comments since racist recordings emerged last month and earned him a lifetime NBA ban, but when the subject turned to Johnson, who was mentioned in the recordings, Sterling is anything but apologetic. "He´s got AIDS!" Sterling said loudly at one point, cutting off Cooper as the interviewer

It took police a quick three days to make an arrest in a horrific, random home invasion in West Columbia last month. But now, some are wondering why the alleged assailant was out of jail in the first place. The woman – police are calling her heroic – was shot numerous times while protecting her 6-year-old daughter from rape by the invader. But the woman managed to secure a vital clue toward the man’s identity. Then, detectives used modern crime-fighting technology – rapid DNA matches and cell-phone locating methods – to seal the ID of the man and track his

Today is the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in England. Ninety-six Liverpool fans died and more than 700 were injured in a human crush in the opening minutes of the 1989 FA Cup Semifinal at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. Inadequate turnstiles created a bottleneck and a crush of thousands of fans outside the ground on the Liverpool side. Police opened a gate, allowing the fans to enter. Standing room fans were kept in enclosed pens at some stadiums for security purposes. Police did not close the entrance to the already full central pens. Thousands streamed down the central tunnel,

A waitress who stopped to deposit her tips in an ATM in South Portland early Thursday morning wound up saving her bank more than $37,000 – minus the $100 she got back as a reward. The woman called police to report a suspicious man at TD Bank’s ATM on Maine Mall Road. What she didn’t know at the time was that the machine had malfunctioned and was spitting out cash as fast as the man could ask for it. The White House on Tuesday formally requested $3.7 billion in emergency funding from Congress to deal with an influx of Central American minors along the southern border. But the proposal was quickly met with broad skepticism among Republican lawmakers, who were doubtful that the package would be approved quickly — if at all. Administration officials said the request is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at building more detention centers, adding immigration judges, and beefing up border patrols and air surveillance. President Obama has said he hopes such steps will both speed deportations and discourage adults from sending children on

Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for the impeachment of President Obama, writing in a Breitbart op-ed that the influx of young illegal immigrants over the southern border "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´no mas.´ " Mixed/careless metaphors aside, this is nothing but bad news for Republicans — especially four months until the 2014 election. Palin is hardly the first GOP politician to raise the issue of impeachment over the past couple years. Others include Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Reps. Starting next week, House Republicans will launch a highly visible—and likely tumultuous—three-week process of bringing to the floor legislation to authorize their promised lawsuit against President Obama over his use of executive actions. "In theory, you could report out a resolution tomorrow and vote on it," said a House GOP aide on Tuesday. "But that is not the approach [the leaders] want to take." Rather, the aim is to display—if not actually engage in—a more deliberative process, even if amid controversy. This drawn-out script builds toward a potentially dramatic floor vote held just days, or even hours, before the House adjourns on

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. Iraq changed from a safe, stable ally (just ask Obama) to a terrorist haven, one of the reasons why, though no fellow Democrats seem likely to edge her, her chances of winning the White House seem dim. While it´s routine for staff to draft such letters for elected officials, matters of such magnitude and to other elected officials of stature are almost always in the name of the principle. Despite Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson vowing to "stem the tide" of unaccompanied illegal minors across the southern border with Mexico, thousands more are expected to enter the United States by the end of the year. With the system being overwhelmed, Border Patrol agents are concerned about minors who have admitted to being MS-13 members, a brutal street gang from El Salvador that has been successful in infiltrating American communities. Agents are also concerned about minors who have committed acts like torture and murder in their home countries before heading north to the United States. "We have six minors in Nogales

Screenwriter James Vanderbilt will make his directorial debut with the film, which will also star Cate Blanchett. Robert Redford has signed on to play Dan Rather in Truth, a film based on the 2005 memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power. The book, written by Rather´s producer Mary Mapes, centers on the firestorm that erupted in September of 2004 after Rather reported that George W. O’Reilly dismissed Powers and told her, “You don’t seem to really know what you’re talking about.” That really set Powers off. “I am
