He was the embodiment of a federal agent on “The F.B.I.” after playing a private eye on another popular ABC series, “77 Sunset Strip.” Efrem Zimbalist Jr., the suave leading man who starred on ABC for 15 straight seasons on 77 Sunset Strip and then The F.B.I., died Friday at his ranch in Solvang, Calif., his children announced. He was 95. Zimbalist was a household name from 1958 through 1974 for his performances as dapper private eye Stuart Bailey on Friday night staple 77 Sunset Strip, which lasted six seasons, and as Inspector Lewis Erskine on The F.B.I., which ran

Mr. Zimbalist was a class act. He was always impeccably groomed and had an incredible speaking voice. I, too, grew up watching him on 77 Sunset Strip and The F.B.I. Those were great series. He was an icon when television was at its best. My condolences to the family. His was a life well lived. Well done. Not many in Hollywood can make that claim.

Re #12, read about the battle of Huertgen Forest ... a friend of ours, recently deceased, went through that. Said it was unblievable. Trees so closely spaced that any gunfire hit the trees causing them to splinter and wound anyone nearby. Horrific. And he went through some horrific battles.

This is a very nice article about Zimbalist, whom I thought was an elegant and very classy man, a marvelous actor:

t is reported that Zimbalist was found unresponsive while he was outside watering his lawn this morning. He was reported to have passed peacefully, and enjoying life all the way up to his death. His family has made statements in memory of him, reminiscing of his good character and loving nature. He was reported to be a devout Christian and a staunch conservative throughout his life.

Hollywood, and the FBI took their time to commemorate his achievements during his later years, receiving lifetime achievement awards, and even an honorary award from the FBI for his portrayal as an agent. His time spent in the spotlight was bright for its time, and his older life was quiet and enjoyable, the perfect blend of a desirable Hollywood lifestyle.

He had wonderful roots. About his father:

Efrem Zimbalist, Sr. (21 April [O.S. 9 April] 1889 or 1890[1] – February 22, 1985) was an internationally known concert violinist, composer, teacher, conductor and director of the Curtis Institute of Music.

Zimbalist was born in the southwestern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, the son of Jewish parents Maria (née Litvinoff) and Aron Zimbalist (?????????, Russian pronunciation [ts?mba´l?ist]), who was a conductor.[1] By the age of nine, Efrem Zimbalist was first violin in his father’s orchestra. At age 12 he entered the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and studied under Leopold Auer. He graduated from the Conservatory in 1907 after winning a gold medal and the Rubinstein Prize, and by age 21 was considered one of the world´s greatest violinists.[2]

Efrem Jr.´s mother was his father´s first wife, Alma Gluck, the famous American soprano Alma Gluck. Efrem Jr.´s daughter Stephanie Zimbalist was also a well-known actress.

Quite a family.

You can read more about his father and family here. I recommend it.

Texas Governor Rick Perry toured the U.S.-Mexico border today without President Barack Obama, who ultimately decided to return to Washington, D.C. this afternoon after making a pit stop for BBQ in Austin. Perry´s office says he took a boat ride down the Rio Grande river and a chopper tour of the Rio Grande Valley with the Texas Department of Public Safety this afternoon. Meanwhile, President Obama spoke at a Democratic Party fundraiser, met with someone who wrote him a letter and gave remarks on the economy before stopping by Franklin Barbeque, where he dropped more than $300 on food for

AUSTIN – Never let it be said there is no such thing as a free lunch, at least when it comes to a presidential visit. On Thursday, after President Obama finished a 40-minute speech at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, his motorcade sped a few blocks away for a quick lunch at Franklin´s, a noted barbeque spot that was packed as always with a lunch crowd. As presidents tend to do, Obama cut to the front of the line so he could order takeout for his official travel party – offering to pay for the two people he

President Obama was absolutely swamped the other night, staving off the munchies at a pizza party in the Mile High city, hobnobbing as headliner at numerous Democrat shindigs, collecting big bucks from big donors all day. Whew. Exhausting. Especially exhausting must be trying to change pace and pivot through the fundraising parties, knowing they’re thrown by those much maligned “fat cats” (Obama’s words, not mine). The president conveniently disparages these fat cats in public, but in private their group hugs are a whole lot of cuddlin,’ purrin’ and rolling over for more tummy tickling from the one who feeds them.

Central Texas, especially that sweet spot halfway between Dallas and Austin where small swaths of the legendary old prairies remain, is an earthly paradise. Blowsy live oaks spread their heavy limbs beneath cloud-spattered skies, while creeks and rivers—most prominently the meandering Brazos—ripple alongside gently rolling pastures gilded with waving grasses. These natural glories are precisely what led Laura and George W. Bush to choose the area for their Prairie Chapel Ranch, the retreat they completed in 2001, just after he became the 43rd president of the United States. As the political war over minors crossing the border continues to escalate, Texas Governor Rick Perry met with President Obama yesterday and demanded that he beef up border patrols and seek changes to federal law that would expedite the removal of arriving minors. For his part, Obama prodded Perry to rally Congressional Republicans to pass the $3.7 billion in funding to expedite removals and provide care the president has asked for. In a good piece, Amie Parnes of the Hill observes that Perry “has seized the spotlight in recent days to become the national face of opposition to President Obama’s

Both sides called the meeting “constructive” and said they agreed philosophically. However, Perry said he is concerned that Obama did not indicate he will take the immediate action he requested: to use his power as commander-in-chief to send the National Guard to secure the border. “You know,

Some (including some Democrats) are saying that the crisis on the Southwestern border is President Obama’s Hurricane Katrina. But there are at least two fundamental differences between the illegal immigration fiasco and Katrina. First, the response to Hurricane Katrina was actually the largest and the fastest response to any natural disaster in history, as Popular Mechanics, as I recall, later documented. Second, President Bush didn’t cause the hurricane. The current disaster is entirely attributable to Barack Obama’s willful refusal to enforce the immigration laws, in violation of his oath of office. Is Obama’s subversion of the nation’s laws an impeachable offense?

It´s not immediately clear what the context of this photo was — Is Perry sad? Uncomfortable? Telling a funny story? Happy, but trying to look serious? Hmm. Perhaps someone made a joke at Perry´s expense? Or maybe Perry just makes the Robert De Niro shrug face a lot for no reason. Anyway, it doesn´t matter right now. Fate hasn´t been kind to Hillary Clinton, at least not in its most recent phase. In 2008, when the plate was set for the national Democrats, she lost the nomination to Barack Obama, of scant years and no gravitas, who soared out of nowhere to wrench destiny from her on the unspecified promise of "change." Now, "change" has come, and people don´t like it. President Obama’s ultimate weakness may be that he believes his own blarney. A year ago, Mr. Obama boasted in a “fireside” Web chat that his “is the most transparent administration in history.” There was not the slightest hint of irony. He may actually believe it. But three-dozen organizations representing newspapermen and other journalists, mostly liberals, beg to differ.
