It´s Time to Correct the
Record on Joseph McCarthy

Townhall, by Diana West

Dear Victor Davis Hanson, You suggest in your syndicated column, "Harry Reid: A McCarthy for Our Time," that we "ask Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) the same question once posed to Sen. Joseph McCarthy by U.S. Army head-counsel Joseph N. Welch: ´Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?´" First, I would like to ask you a question: Are you aware of the context of Welch´s showboating remarks?

Comments:
A critique of a recent Hanson column in which he compares Harry Reid to Joe McCarthy.

I was very disappointed when I read the VDH piece, and complete;y agree with Ms. West - McCarthy was no Harry Reid.

About 10-15 years ago someone wrote about McCarthy and how he was correct in his assertions. It was his tactics in questioning that led to his downfall.

#1, I believe you are referring to the Coulter book about the Venona Papers which proved McCarthy was right all along?

VDH is usually right on the money, but this is disappointing to say the least. McCarthy was twice the man Reid ever will be.

That is of course if you believe Reid is a man. I have trouble thinking of him as anything but a slimey, sniveling weasel. (With apologies to weasels every where)

I am having trouble wrapping my head around the possibility of disagreeing with the Great VDH. However, Ms. W does make sense here. I still side with Podhoretz and Radosh over the last dust-up, though.

I used to think that Dingy Harry was the Nevada state reptile. Then I learned that that position is held by the venerable and honorable desert tortoise.

Harry, OTH, is the Nevada state fossil.

The late, great Sen Joseph McCarthy will live in infamy, due to the manifest inability to tell the difference between McCarthy and HUAC. HUAC, in the House, had no relation to McCarthy, who was a Senator. And it was HUAC who blacklisted people.
McCarthy DID have lists of spies from the U.S.S.R. who worked in the administrations of Roosevelt and Truman. Chief among them was Alger Hiss. The Venona decrypts prove this allegation.
So Sen Reid is up to his usual lies. I would like to see documentation of the last true thing Reid has said.

It has become a daily frightening occurrence, hearing politicians, commentators, pundits, and stunned Americans say, “That´s outrageous!” “He can´t do that!” “No way!” “It´s against federal law!” “They have no legal authority to force us to do that!” These comments are in response to the daily unprecedented out-of-control tyranny handed down by Obama and his operatives. We are talking arrogance with a capital A coming out of the Obama administration. For example: the GOP was moving too slow in caving to Obama´s amnesty scheme, so Obama said, Heck with it, I´ll bypass everyone and make it happen. Obama sent a

WASHINGTON -- The commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service refused to apologize to Congress for losing e-mails related to its targeting of conservative groups, saying it´s still attempting to recover the data and it´s too soon to know how many e-mails are missing. "I don´t think an apology is owed," Commissioner John Koskinen told the House Ways and Means Committee. "Every e-mail has been preserved that we have." In his most contentious hearing since becoming commissioner six months ago, Koskinen testified about efforts the IRS has made to recover e-mails that were lost when Lois Lerner´s computer hard drive crashed

At a time when debate is swirling over the assertion that 97 percent of scientists endorse man-made global warming, Secretary of State John Kerry – a frequent citer of the 97 percent figure – in a speech Wednesday nudged the figure up to “at least 98, 99 percent.” “When it comes to climate change, when it comes to food security, we are literally facing a moment of adversity – perhaps even dire necessity,” Kerry said at a State Department food security award ceremony. “It’s hard to convince people – hard to convince people of a challenge that isn’t immediately tangible

Fox News host Bill O´Reilly dissed conservative talk radio host and icon Rush Limbaugh at an event in New York City Wednesday evening. According to the Daily Beast, O´Reilly told the audience, “I’m not Rush Limbaugh or Al Franken, where everything has to fit into my worldview… I’m a fact-based guy. A lot of people don’t understand that.” O´Reilly made his remarks about being a "fact-based guy" days after he tried to convince his viewers that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) did not lose his primary race last week to Dave Brat because of the amnesty issue. O´Reilly conveniently ignored the

Hillary Clinton — the woman assumed to be the next Democratic Party presidential nominee and quite possibly the next president — is evidently a big snooze. According to Mediate, her interviews to promote her book on CNN and Fox had underwhelming numbers. In the case of Greta Van Susteren’s show, she sent people fleeing midway. More importantly, her book itself is a sales disappointment and, I would wager, even more disappointing if you could ascertain how many who did buy it read actually past page 15. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in single digits. No, I haven’t read it

MEGYN KELLY: In your op-ed, you write as follows: ´Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many.´ But time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well, sir. You said there were no doubts that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. You said we would be greeted as liberators. You said the Iraq insurgency was in its last throes back in 2005. And you said after our intervention, extremists would have to "rethink their strategy of jihad." Now with almost a trillion dollars spent there

President Obama´s approval rating has dropped to 41 percent, a majority of Americans disapprove of his handling of foreign policy issues, he has lost support from the Hispanic community and Americans actually think his administration is less competent than the Bush White House post-Hurricane Katrina, according to a new survey from the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. In short, the poll is nothing but bad news for the president. The survey would appear to be so bad, in fact, that NBC News´ Chuck Todd said Tuesday that the poll basically means the public has declared the Obama presidency to be

President Obama told his Mexican counterpart in a phone call Thursday that immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally won’t qualify for legalized status or deferred deportation, including children. The White House said Mr. Obama and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto discussed “a regional strategy” to address the surge of unaccompanied children coming from Central America, through Mexico, to the U.S. With thousands of children trying to enter the U.S. illegally in recent months, Vice President Joseph R. Biden will visit Guatemala on Friday. Mr. Biden will warn officials and parents that illegal immigration is dangerous and that youth won’t be allowed to stay

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer apparently doesn’t think Southern men are manly. Following Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor’s stunning loss last week, Mr. Schweitzer initial response, according to a profile in The National Journal, was, “men in the South, they are a little effeminate.” “They just have effeminate mannerisms,” Mr. Schweitzer said. “If you were just a regular person, you turned on the TV, and you saw Eric Cantor talking, I would say—and I’m fine with gay people, that’s all right—but my gaydar is 60-70 percent.” “But he’s not, I think, so I don’t know. First Lady Michelle Obama reminded attendees of a naturalization ceremony Wednesday that the Founding Fathers weren’t born in America. The ceremony for 50 new U.S. citizens was held at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. “It’s amazing that just a few feet from here where I’m standing are the signatures of the 56 Founders who put their names on a Declaration that changed the course of history,” she said during her speech, referring to the Declaration of Independence. “And like the 50 of you, none of them were born American – they became American.” Obama pointed out that the Founding Fathers pledged their

The U.S. is leading by example in promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) rights at home and around the world, Secretary of State John Kerry said Thursday. He said the federal government recognizes same-sex marriages of foreign diplomats stationed in the U.S., and it expects all other countries to do the same in their treatment of U.S. personnel deployed abroad. “Let me be clear: We oppose any effort by any country to deny visas for spouses of American staff,” he said. “It’s discriminatory, it’s unacceptable, it has no place in the 21st century.”

Outgoing White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Thursday that he never lied to the media. “The answer is no,” he answered when The Daily Caller asked him “did you ever lie to us?” “Honestly, it is not because I’m a paragon of virtue, it is because that would be a terrible way to do the job,” he said at a June 18 breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. “And what you do when you can’t say is you don’t and you take the question or you explain what you can without revealing what you can’t say,” he said.
