The meteoric, costly and unprecedented
rise of incarceration in America

Washington Post, by Emily Badger

Original Article

Pleas to reform prison policy in the United States have come from numerous interest and advocacy groups over the years, their numbers steadily expanding as the size of the world´s largest prison population has, too. They´ve come from the families of incarcerated offenders, from policymakers who´ve wearied of the war on drugs, from fiscal conservatives who´ve watched states devote ever more money to incarceration. Increasingly, the call for prison reform has come from unlikely alliances of the left and right. But this latest voice may carry the most weight yet: On Wednesday, the National Research Council published a 464-page

The unfortunate fact is that there are so many laws, regulations and rules in this country that one can scarcely leave ones home without unconsciously committing at least three felonies. We, all of us, are just one MISTAKE away from prison.

2 points: 1. Please approach this via legislation and not courts or executive action. Yes, too d*mn many laws. But, change the laws, no wholesale reduction in "prisoners".

2. I always love the way the Times/Post/NBCCBSABC frames the issue: "Despite a dropping crime rate, the prisons are full."
Yes, they are full of the criminals who, by their incarceration, are dropping the crime rate. Media think Effect/Cause. Real people think Cause/Effect.

When you systematically cut off the connection to knowing right versus wrong as a matter of state policy, what do you expect? These are the poisonous fruits of secular humanism. Prison reform has its value but its not the answer.

I work with people who don´t fear the system: in fact, they laugh at it. These people have given up their opportunities to be law-abiding citizens. Those and other groups of convicted sociopaths include second-time offenders of violent crimes and gang-bangers (need I mention convicted felons who are also illegal aliens?).

None of them belong in our country, or our planet. I´m a big fan of eastern European justice (generally).

President Barack Obama shared a fist bump with a Texas restaurant employee who urged him to do more to promote gay rights in the United States. Daniel Rugg Webb, a comedian, artist and musician, as well as an employee at Franklin Barbecue in Austin, seized the opportunity to make his voice heard when he found out Potus was visiting the food joint on Thursday, The Austin Chronicle reported. (Snip) Obama responded: “Are you gay?! To which Webb replied: “Only when I have sex.” Laughing, the President told Webb to “bump me” and the pair knocked their fists together. The exchange

Goma (DR Congo) - Goma, a city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, sits by one of the world´s largest freshwater reservoirs and has some of Africa´s heaviest annual rainfall, yet it is a thirsty place. Most of the city´s one million residents, living close to the shores of Lake Kivu, have to struggle every day to fetch water home. From daybreak, an endless stream of cyclists heads to the lake and back, filling battered containers with as much water as they can carry. Harare, Zimbabwe — President Robert Mugabe’s statement early this month that whites will no longer be allowed to own land in Zimbabwe, and that any white farmers still left will be kicked out, raised eyebrows at home and abroad. Now those comments by the long-ruling autocrat are bringing a backlash in Zimbabwe’s beleaguered trade and tourism ministries. One Harare business newspaper calls them “not just racist but also unconstitutional, retrogressive, and detrimental.” As the Monitor reported July 3, Mr. Mugabe visited a small farming community 120 miles from the capital Harare that was handing out land permits. A massive influx of unlawful immigrants from Central America has policymakers searching for quick fix. While inadequate border security and false perceptions of U.S. immigration law have undoubtedly helped fuel the problem, they are just part of the equation. Michelle Obama is a popular first lady. On average, her favorable ratings have been higher than those of her predecessors, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. This may well reflect the fact that more so than other first ladies, Mrs. Obama has a stand-alone personal image. Unlike other recent first ladies, her popularity has not fallen or risen with her husband’s. How popular is Michelle? A steady two-thirds of the public has held a favorable view of Mrs. Obama, according to nationwide Gallup poll and Pew Research Center surveys, for most of her time as first lady. BILLINGS, Mont. – Coal industry representatives say lawsuits against mines in three Western states could have consequences across the U.S. as environmentalists seek changes in how mining is approved on federally owned reserves. In civil cases unfolding in Colorado, New Mexico and Montana, the group WildEarth Guardians asserts coal companies benefited from lax oversight by federal regulators. The group says the U.S. Department of Interior approved mining plans without enough public involvement, and gave little heed to the pollution caused by digging, shipping and burning coal. The group asked the courts to stop mining until the plans are re-done. The

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama.
