White House takes more heat
for Benghazi response

CBS News, by Stephanie Condon*

The Obama administration on Thursday came under fire once again for its response to the 2012 attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya -- both its immediate military response and its rhetorical response in the days following the attack. In a congressional hearing, Retired Brig. Gen. Robert Lovell, who was in the U.S. military´s operation center during the attack, said the U.S. should have tried to do more to counter the attack that led to the deaths of four Americans. "There are accounts of time, space and capability discussions of the question, could we have gotten there in time

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) plans to introduce legislation that would allow family members to take guns away from "unstable" and "violent" people. Boxer said her Pause for Safety Act was in response to the May 23 mass shooting and stabbing spree in Isla Vista, Calif., by Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old former Santa Barbara City College student. Seven people died in the attack, including Rodger, who killed himself. Before the shooting, Elliot Rodger’s mother had called police and asked them to check on her son. She called after seeing a video Rodger had posted online where he talked about women hating

The man behind the Facebook group “Bowe Bergdahl is NOT a Hero!” isn’t, as most would initially believe, some conservative crank mad at the Obama administration for swapping five Taliban prisoners in exchange for the American prisoner of war. According to Jake Tapper, Greg Leatherman, the creator of the group, was actually one of Bergdahl’s squad leaders before he disappeared and allegedly abandoned his post. The page was created last Saturday, the day Bergdahl was released, and has become a gathering place for fellow soldiers to air their many grievances against Bergdahl, whom they consider a deserter both directly and indirectly

A group of Americans are demanding that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl be punished after the Obama administration secured his release from the Taliban in Afghanistan. “Punish Bowe Bergdahl for being AWOL / Desertion during Operation Enduring Freedom,” reads the title of the petition created on the White House´s website. The petition was created on Saturday, May 31 after President Obama announced that the United States had secured Bergdahl´s release. “Army member Bowe Bergdahl ´who did not earn the rank of SGT´ went AWOL / Deserted the United States Army in June 2009,” the petition reads. “Punish Bowe Bergdahl for walking

A Pentagon investigation concluded in 2010 that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl walked away from his unit, and after an initial flurry of searching the military decided not to exert extraordinary efforts to rescue him, according to a former senior defense official who was involved in the matter. Instead, the U.S. government pursued negotiations to get him back over the following five years of his captivity — a track that led to his release over the weekend. Bergdahl was being checked and treated Monday at a U.S. military hospital in Germany as questions mounted at home over the swap that resulted

NEW YORK -Seattle´s city council on Monday unanimously approved an increase in the city´s minimum wage to $15 an hour, making it the nation´s highest by far. The increase was formally proposed by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, and his spokesman said he intends to sign the ordinance on Tuesday. Washington already has the nation´s highest state-level minimum wage, at $9.32. That rate also applies to the city. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25, and Democrats in Congress have been pushing for a gradual increase to $10.10, but so far to little effect. The increase to $15 in Seattle will

The Pentagon said Monday it is reviewing claims that U.S. soldiers were killed in the course of the years-long search for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was released over the weekend by his Taliban captors. The sense of celebration surrounding the announcement Saturday of Bergdahl´s release quickly has given way to controversy -- including questions surrounding his initial disappearance from his eastern Afghanistan post five years ago and the lengths to which U.S. forces went to find him. The names and faces of six soldiers, who died allegedly during the search for Bergdahl, began to emerge within hours of the

Nearly 70 countries have agreed to share information from all their banks as part of a U.S. law that targets Americans hiding assets overseas. The sense of pride expressed by officials of the Obama administration at the release of Army Sgt. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the last known American POW, was freed after five years in captivity — an ordeal that began and ended in Afghanistan under a shroud of mystery. The Taliban turned over Bergdahl Saturday morning to US special forces in exchange for five notorious Islamic militants who had been held at Guantanamo Bay and will be sent to Qatar, where they will stay for a year under the terms of the trade. At least one of the prisoners, ranking Taliban leader Khairullah Khairkhwa, had direct ties to Osama bin Laden. Bergdahl was picked up by helicopter in western Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border.

WASHINGTON -- Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl can expect a buoyant homecoming after five years in Taliban hands, but those in the government who worked for his release face mounting questions over the prisoner swap that won his freedom. Even in the first hours of Bergdahl´s handoff to U.S. special forces in eastern Afghanistan, it was clear this would not be an uncomplicated yellow-ribbon celebration. Five terrorist suspects also walked free, stirring a debate in Washington over whether the exchange will heighten the risk of other Americans being snatched as bargaining chips and whether the released detainees - several senior Taliban figures

For five years, soldiers have been forced to stay silent about the disappearance and search for Bergdahl. Now we can talk about what really happened. It was June 30, 2009, and I was in the city of Sharana, the capitol of Paktika province in Afghanistan. As I stepped out of a decrepit office building into a perfect sunny day, a member of my team started talking into his radio. “Say that again,” he said. “There’s an American soldier missing?” There was. His name was Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl, the only prisoner of war in the Afghan theater of operations.

Just when you thought President Obama could not possibly be more of an emasculated, impotent cuckold, he releases five top-level al Qaeda terrorists from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for a sketchy U.S. soldier who once said he was “ashamed to be American.” The milquetoast president cut a deal with terrorists early Saturday — just before heading to the links for a five-hour round of golf. When he returned to the White House, he made a bombastic statement from the Rose Garden, but never mentioned he’d set free a handful of hard-core killers. The Obama administration on Monday unveiled the first-ever national limits on carbon emissions from existing power plants, a controversial regulation aimed at fulfilling a key plank of President Obama´s climate change agenda. The Environmental Protection Agency wants existing plants to cut pollution by 30 percent by 2030, under the plan. The draft regulation sidesteps Congress, where Obama´s Democratic allies have failed to pass a so-called "cap-and-trade" plan to limit such emissions. The EPA plan will go into effect in June 2016, following a one-year comment period. States will then be responsible for executing the rule with some flexibility. They are

With about a quarter of the primary contests now over, the results of the cycle’s high-profile endorsements tell the story of the Republican Party itself, with an early surge of business-friendly Establishment-backed successes, a handful of Tea Party wipeouts, and plenty of scores still left to settle. The hottest hand in Republican primary politics so far belongs to none other than Romney, the 2012 Republican
