Cutting through the gloom of a winter that never seems to end and another weak GDP report, eBay EBAY -4.97% has broadcast the year´s most bullish signal about the U.S. economy. This week the California technology company announced that it´s paying $3 billion in U.S. taxes for the privilege of bringing home $9 billion in cash that is currently held in overseas subsidiaries. It appears that eBay is so convinced that American companies are still creating the world´s best technologies that it would rather invest $6 billion here than $9 billion anywhere else. The White House found itself on defense Wednesday following the release of emails tying a top aide to former U.N. ambassador Susan Rice´s controversial Sunday show statements after the Benghazi terror attack. (Snip)During a heated briefing with reporters Wednesday afternoon, Press Secretary Jay Carney repeatedly tried to claim that the so-called "prep call" with Rice -- as it was described in one email -- was not about Benghazi. The prep session, he said, was just about the demonstrations elsewhere in the Muslim world that week. "It is not about Benghazi -- it is about the protests around the Muslim world,"

The White House should "come clean" and release all of its e-mails related to the crafting of former U.N. ambassador Susan Rice´s message on the Benghazi attack, including ones redacted for supposed national security purposes, says the GOP.(Snip)White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Wednesday that Rhodes´ e-mail had been misconstrued because it was referring to protests happening across the Muslim world at the time. "The e-mail and the talking points were not about Benghazi. They were about the general situation in the Muslim world," Carney said. But the White House had provided the emails to House Committee on Oversight and Government

What should the NBA do about Donald Sterling? The answer is easy if you are a columnist, or Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan or LeBron James, or a fan disgusted by the Clippers owner´s racist rant. You can say you are "obviously disgusted" (Jordan), that you will never attend a Clippers game as long as Sterling owns the team (Johnson) or that there is "no room" for Sterling in the NBA (James). You can be proud, knowing you took a stand. But if you are commissioner Adam Silver, the question gets complicated. People demanding that Silver get rid of Sterling

Why hasn’t Shepard Smith come out yet? The affable Fox News anchor has a longtime boyfriend, ranks among Fox’s most senior talent, and lives in New York City. It could be, of course, that he’s just a very private person, or—as the Times argued in October—that public attitudes have changed and nobody cares if a famous figure is gay. Or it could be that, when Smith tried to come out last year, Fox silenced and punished him. In the summer of 2013, according to multiple sources with knowledge of their exchange, Shepard Smith approached Fox News president Roger Ailes about

Secretary of State John F. Kerry has stepped in it again — with a gaffe that this time not only makes him look foolish but makes a mess of U.S. foreign policy and destroys any chance he had of realizing his legacy pipe dream of brokering Middle East peace. In a private meeting with senior international officials Friday, Kerry said that if the Israelis and Palestinians can’t achieve a two-state solution, Israel risks becoming “an apartheid state with second-class citizens.” Israelis are aghast — especially with Kerry’s remarks being reported yesterday on Holocaust Remembrance Day — and have started issuing calls for

The White House says a botched execution of a death row inmate in Oklahoma fell short of the humane standards required when the death penalty is carried out. Officials halted Clayton Lockett´s execution Tuesday when he convulsed violently and tried to lift his head after a doctor declared him unconscious. He later died of an apparent heart attack after spending 40 minutes writhing in pain. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that President Barack Obama believes evidence shows the death penalty doesn´t effectively deter crime. That said, Carney reiterated that Obama believes some crimes are so heinous that the death penalty is

Barack Obama’s Asia tour had the look and feel of a tired, uninterested president simply going through the motions. Other than just showing up, Obama did precious little to advance our interests or demonstrate his oft-promised “pivot” to Asia. The trip was instead overshadowed by Ukraine’s continuing crisis and the collapse of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. And the visit’s real legacy, the spreading impression of U.S. lassitude and weakness, is profoundly dangerous. In particular, Obama made no progress on Asia’s most pressing issue, Beijing’s assertive territorial claims in the East and South China Seas, thus missing a significant chance to deter future Chinese belligerence. MILWAUKEE — A federal judge in Milwaukee struck down Wisconsin’s voter identification law Tuesday, saying a requirement that voters show a state-issued photo ID at the polls imposes an unfair burden on poor and minority voters. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman sided with opponents of the law, who argued that low-income and minority voters aren’t as likely to have photo IDs or the documents needed to get them. Adelman said the law violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. Adelman’s decision invalidates Wisconsin’s law and could set a precedent for similar legal challenges in Texas, North Carolina and elsewhere.

Jason Riley, the Wall Street Journal’s Political Diary editor, does not find the NAACP’s reaction to the controversy surrounding racist remarks made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling to be particularly genuine.
