U.S. officials say Syria is using remaining
chemical weapons stockpile as leverage

Washington Post, by Ernesto Londoño and Greg Miller

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 5/1/2014 8:17:22 AM

The months-long effort to dismantle Syria’s chemical weapons program has ground to a halt because Syria is holding on to 27 tons of sarin precursor chemicals as leverage in a dispute with the international community over the future of facilities used to store the deadly agents, according to U.S. officials. Having turned over all but an estimated 8 percent of its chemical arsenal to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Damascus missed a deadline Sunday to relinquish the remnants of its arsenal, which are stored in 16 containers in Damascus, U.S. officials said.

Have the Al queda rebels turned over all their chemical weapons, too?

Sometime in the 1980s, Marion Barry, the married mayor of Washington, DC, and a man who enjoyed a party, found himself alone with a woman at a friend’s house after a long, celebratory night. At the time, Barry, a casual drinker whose drinking grew less casual throughout his mayoralty, had never tried cocaine. But after the woman came out of the bathroom for the third time that night, she said to Barry, “That’s some good s—. You want some? This makes my p—- hot.” Like Hillary Clinton, Barry, 78, has a political memoir out this week. For pure entertainment value, his is

There was a time when we would honor symbols of excellence that had some significant achievements that deserved our adulation. Whether it be enormous talent, superior intelligence, political or business success, etc. there would be something in the makeup of one´s character that generated praise. I am having a very difficult time figuring out now why so many liberal icons come up short on substance unless it´s thanks to media dishonesty. Two of the most dubious icons who continue to garner liberal endorsements are Jane Fonda and Hillary Clinton.

Blair’s Iraq invasion was a tragic

I have come to the conclusion that Tony Blair has finally gone mad. He wrote an essay on his website on Sunday (reproduced in the Telegraph) that struck me as unhinged in its refusal to face facts. In discussing the disaster of modern Iraq he made assertions that are so jaw-droppingly and breathtakingly at variance with reality that he surely needs professional psychiatric help. He said that the allied invasion of 2003 was in no way responsible for the present nightmare – in which al-Qaeda has taken control of a huge chunk of the country and is beheading and torturing Shias,

As the Obama administration’s case for the Bowe Bergdahl-Taliban prisoner exchange further unraveled last week, the geo-political implications of the deal became clearer. They’re not pretty. In the hours before Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel clicked on the microphone to testify about the swap on June 11, Obama administration officials told reporters to expect a forceful defense of the exchange and an aggressive refutation of the criticism that has attended it. That didn’t happen. Instead, Hagel walked members of the House Armed Services Committee through the administration’s well-worn talking points, which had already failed to satisfy many members of Congress. And

The New York Times has no plans to investigate the work of its former reporter Chris Hedges amid allegations that he plagiarized multiple stories for other publications over the past decade. The New Republic reported on Thursday that the Pulitzer winner has been accused of plagiarizing passages in stories written for Harper’s, Truthdig, and his 2002 book War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning. The article claims Hedges lifted copy from a range of sources over the years, including Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Matt Katz, Canadian leftist Naomi Klein, Neil Postman, and Ernest Hemingway. The New Republic published several excerpts from Hedges’ articles

Suddenly, Iraq is exploding again on our television screens. Sunni militants have seized Mosul and Tikrit, two of the country’s most important cities, and are beginning to drive toward Baghdad. The Kurds have taken over Kirkuk. The prime minister has declared a state of emergency and is begging for U.S. help, including airstrikes. The president of the United States is addressing the situation. Almost feels like 2007 all over again. The media have long since checked out of Iraq. Even in the final years of U.S. involvement, the images of war all but faded from television and the newspaper stories moved to inside

The U.S. spent $3 million on boats

The United States spent more than $3 million on eight patrol boats for the Afghan police, according to an internal audit released Thursday. That sentence is surprising for a few reasons: 1. Afghanistan is landlocked. 2. Not a single boat has arrived in Afghanistan, even though the purchase was made in 2010. 3. That works out to be more than $375,000 per boat. Similar boats in the United States are typically sold for about $50,000. According to the report from the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the boats were meant to be used to patrol the Amu Darya River running between Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — As the threat from Sunni militants in western Iraq escalated last month, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki secretly asked the Obama administration to consider carrying out airstrikes against extremist staging areas, according to Iraqi and American officials. But Iraq’s appeals for a military response have so far been rebuffed by the White House, which has been reluctant to open a new chapter in a conflict that President Obama has insisted was over when the United States withdrew the last of its forces from Iraq in 2011. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is not a lawyer. He´s not famous for lawyerly evasions. But when it came to a few of the most critical issues discussed at the House Armed Services Committee´s hearing on the Bowe Bergdahl case Wednesday, Hagel was full of wiggle words. Actually, just one wiggle word -- "direct" -- but Hagel used it repeatedly to sow confusion about some key questions. The first question concerned the background of the five Taliban commanders traded by the Obama administration for the release of Bergdahl. Hagel sought to downplay the threat posed by freeing the five. "They´ve been in

Hillary Rodham Clinton has written a new book. Except maybe she hasn’t. It all depends on what the definition of “written” is. The former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state had some help on her new memoir, “Hard Choices.” Clinton employed a phalanx of aides and associates in producing the volume, which is being released Tuesday. But don’t expect to hear much about Clinton’s “book team,” as she calls those who helped her write the book, which carries her name alone on its cover. Yet the situation has received less attention than it might amid the furor over House Majority Leader Eric Cantor´s primary defeat, the collapse of Iraq, the continuing Bergdahl matter, and Hillary Clinton´s book tour. Liberal writer Mickey Kaus had enough of Murphy´s nonsense and slammed him on Twitter on Friday evening. Kaus became Brat´s de facto press secretary and top advocate on Twitter in the last months of the campaign because Kaus, like Brat, opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants because it would hurt American workers. RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – It´s perhaps appropriate that President Barack Obama is vacationing this weekend in California, where the state flag features a roaming grizzly. The restless president, who has compared himself to a caged animal on recent wanderings by declaring the "bear is loose," took a long Father´s Day weekend away with his wife and older daughter. The visit to the desert resort area of Palm Springs is one of the ways Obama has been trying to escape during his sixth year cloistered in the White House. Barack and Michelle Obama´s weekend visit to Palm Springs, California, started out with a wardrobe malfunction for the first lady - but luckily the president was there to save the day. The first couple were stepping off Air Force One at the Palm Springs International Airport on a balmy Friday evening when a gust of wind nearly blew up the voluminous skirt of Mrs Obama´s green-and-black summer frock. The 50-year-old first lady was photographed struggling to tame the billowing fabric, with a relaxed Mr Obama walking alongside her with a rueful smile on his wife.Eventually, the commander-in-chief came to his

Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Kennedy, at the dawn of the space program, that the moon “was made of cheese.” He saved his most scathing words for lawmakers who say they are not qualified to

Members of Congress called on President Obama Sunday to link up with Arab allies and quell a quick-moving crisis in Iraq, where Islamic militants swept toward Baghdad and left a bloody trail in their wake. Republican lawmakers said the administration has sat on the sidelines for too long as sectarian violence threatens to undo what U.S. troops accomplished during the war in Iraq. The bloodshed spurred by militants from an al Qaeda splinter group could topple the country’s fragile government while civil war rages in neighboring Syria, they said, offering a magnet for extremists from Iran and even western nations.
