More than 100 people have been injured in an apparent gas explosion in a Florida prison, local officials say. Part of the prison in Pensacola collapsed after the blast late on Wednesday, forcing an evacuation. About 600 people--inmates and correction officials--were believed to be in the building at the time. Unconfirmed reports say two inmates were killed. The officials are investigating whether a recent flooding could have caused the explosion. The blast happened shortly after 23:00 local time on Wednesday (05:00 GMT Thursday). "There was an apparent gas explosion in the central booking area of the Escambia County jail," local spokeswoman Kathleen Dough-Castro said.

Republicans on Capitol Hill announced Wednesday evening that just 67 percent of Americans who bought Obamacare plans through the federal government´s health insurance marketplace have sealed the deal by actually paying for their policies. GOP members of the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations said they went to ´all 160 insurance providers in the federally facilitated marketplace´ for the data after the White House repeatedly insisted it didn´t have numbers to share. The startling results will reignite the protracted political fight over the Affordable Care Act that has dogged the Obama administration since shortly after the president

Jay Carney fumbles on bombshell email

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney endured a sustained grilling from reporters on Wednesday as he struggled to explain an email showing the White House´s involvement in spinning a false account of why four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya less than two months before the 2012 presidential election. The email, written by Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes, described a ´prep call´ with then-UN Ambassador Susan Rice which took place four days after the September 11, 2012 terror attack, and less than a day before she was to be a guest on five different Sunday morning political talk shows.

The White House spent $2,952,278 in flight expenses this year for two trips President Barack Obama took on which he spent a large chunk of his time playing golf. Obama billed both trips as official business, but he spent more time golfing than he did participating in government meetings, government oversight organization Judicial Watch reports. [Snip] The cost per flying hour includes fuel, food consumed on the flight and maintenance to the plane, the Department of the Air Force said in its response. It does not include the cost of the cargo plane that accompanies the president, as The White

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams was arrested last night by police for the murder of a widowed mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972. The ´freedom fighter´-turned-politician who is 65, was arrested at home shortly before tea-time. He is accused of the murder of Jean McConville, who was abducted and murdered by the Provisional IRA and secretly buried on a beach in the Republic of Ireland. Witnesses to her abduction claimed she had gone to the aid of a wounded British soldier, shot by the IRA. But the terror organisation later claimed she had been passing

The Telegraph´s investigation proving that the Assad regime is routinely using chlorine bombs against Syria´s civilian population must serve as a wake up call to the West that it can no longer ignore a brutal conflict that has so far cost an estimated 150,000 lives. [Snip] Trying to make sure Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn´t invade eastern Ukraine has been the top priority for Western politicians, which has meant that little attention has been paid to the Syrian conflict. Freed from the spotlight of international scrutiny, the Assad regime has consequently been given free rein to indulge in brutal tactics

A British spaceport could be launching crafts into space within five years, the science minister has said. David Willetts announced yesterday that a group of space, defence, business and transport experts has been formed to find a suitable base for the launch site. The spaceport could be operational as early as 2019 to take advantage of a new era in space tourism, with Mr Willetts saying he hoped Virgin Galactic would take off from the new site. It will also act as a satellite launch centre. Although no sites have been earmarked, Mr Willetts said it was unlikely the spaceport would be in

Have you noticed how remarkably few morris dancers, bricklayers or retired colonels there are on the Today programme? There’s a Scotsman; a Welshman; a woman of Pakistani heritage (though rather posh: Mishal Husain’s grandfather was private military secretary to Field Marshal Auchinleck); and a man whom some suspect of being a closet Tory. But I think we can all agree that Radio 4’s flagship news programme has a long way to go before it truly represents the richness and diversity of its audience. Happily, I was relieved to read in The Telegraph yesterday that the BBC is on the case. Senior

Anybody who thought Nigel Farage would be a nine-day wonder blowhard had better start rethinking the strategy. The man has got his head screwed on. Not only did he make the right decision over not running in the Newark by-election but his party actually told the truth (!!) about why they were refraining. To have run and not won--or worse, to have run and not even come a very plausible second to the Conservatives--would well and truly have "burst the bubble" of their current stupendous rise. So they will suffer the momentary embarrassment of being called "frit" by a relieved Tory

What should the NBA do about Donald Sterling? The answer is easy if you are a columnist, or Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan or LeBron James, or a fan disgusted by the Clippers owner´s racist rant. You can say you are "obviously disgusted" (Jordan), that you will never attend a Clippers game as long as Sterling owns the team (Johnson) or that there is "no room" for Sterling in the NBA (James). You can be proud, knowing you took a stand. But if you are commissioner Adam Silver, the question gets complicated. People demanding that Silver get rid of Sterling

One aspect of the scandal, anyway. The administration has released a series of emails in response to FOIA requests by Judicial Watch. You can read them here. This one, by Benjamin Rhodes, a White House political operative, shows the administration’s priorities on the Friday before Susan Rice’s infamous tour of the Sunday talk shows. The overriding imperative was to deflect attention from the “broader failure of policy” that led to the disaster. Roger Simon says these emails are grounds for impeachment. I wouldn’t go

Why hasn’t Shepard Smith come out yet? The affable Fox News anchor has a longtime boyfriend, ranks among Fox’s most senior talent, and lives in New York City. It could be, of course, that he’s just a very private person, or—as the Times argued in October—that public attitudes have changed and nobody cares if a famous figure is gay. Or it could be that, when Smith tried to come out last year, Fox silenced and punished him. In the summer of 2013, according to multiple sources with knowledge of their exchange, Shepard Smith approached Fox News president Roger Ailes about

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, has made a commendable attempt to end the rancorous dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. [Snip] Having expended so much effort, it is only natural that Mr Kerry should feel a deep sense of frustration that the talks--as so many predicted--have run into the ground after Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, last week announced the suspension of his country’s participation. This was in response to the united accord struck by Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, with the Islamist Hamas group, which Israel considers a terrorist organisation.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry has stepped in it again — with a gaffe that this time not only makes him look foolish but makes a mess of U.S. foreign policy and destroys any chance he had of realizing his legacy pipe dream of brokering Middle East peace. In a private meeting with senior international officials Friday, Kerry said that if the Israelis and Palestinians can’t achieve a two-state solution, Israel risks becoming “an apartheid state with second-class citizens.” Israelis are aghast — especially with Kerry’s remarks being reported yesterday on Holocaust Remembrance Day — and have started issuing calls for

The White House says a botched execution of a death row inmate in Oklahoma fell short of the humane standards required when the death penalty is carried out. Officials halted Clayton Lockett´s execution Tuesday when he convulsed violently and tried to lift his head after a doctor declared him unconscious. He later died of an apparent heart attack after spending 40 minutes writhing in pain. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that President Barack Obama believes evidence shows the death penalty doesn´t effectively deter crime. That said, Carney reiterated that Obama believes some crimes are so heinous that the death penalty is

Barack Obama’s Asia tour had the look and feel of a tired, uninterested president simply going through the motions. Other than just showing up, Obama did precious little to advance our interests or demonstrate his oft-promised “pivot” to Asia. The trip was instead overshadowed by Ukraine’s continuing crisis and the collapse of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. And the visit’s real legacy, the spreading impression of U.S. lassitude and weakness, is profoundly dangerous. In particular, Obama made no progress on Asia’s most pressing issue, Beijing’s assertive territorial claims in the East and South China Seas, thus missing a significant chance to deter future Chinese belligerence. MILWAUKEE — A federal judge in Milwaukee struck down Wisconsin’s voter identification law Tuesday, saying a requirement that voters show a state-issued photo ID at the polls imposes an unfair burden on poor and minority voters. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman sided with opponents of the law, who argued that low-income and minority voters aren’t as likely to have photo IDs or the documents needed to get them. Adelman said the law violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. Adelman’s decision invalidates Wisconsin’s law and could set a precedent for similar legal challenges in Texas, North Carolina and elsewhere.

New White House e-mails made public Tuesday by conservative Judicial Watch further support that the Obama team wanted then-U.N. Like Jesse Ventura or Ross Perot, she may show up every once in a while to hurl red meat or use stunt cameos to remind us a little of her awkward charms. First she gave a speech to the NRA in which she joked that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists, offending people who otherwise make up her base. Next, Robert Costa reported on the ever-smaller crowds that have
