NEW YORK — There are more than 300 of them in New York — violent crews of dozens of 12- to 20-year-olds with names such as Very Crispy Gangsters, True Money Gang and Cash Bama Bullies. Police say these groups, clustered around a particular block or housing project, are responsible for about 40 percent of the city’s shootings, with most of that violence stemming from the smallest of disses on the street, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. “It’s like belonging to an evil fraternity,” said Inspector Kevin Catalina, commander of the New York Police Department’s gang division. “A lot of it

As with many federal accounts, the Highway Trust Fund is running on empty. Refilled with the 18.4-cent per gallon gas tax and disbursed by politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, the federal highway fund faces a $63 billion shortfall through 2018. Texas gets $2-3 billion per year from the fund which goes towards the roughly $7 billion in yearly Texas Department of Transportation expenditures. A shortage of funds tends to concentrate the mind—which is why the White House just proposed lifting an old federal restriction against tolling on 46,000 miles of interstate roads. This would allow states to collect tolls on

Thorn-coated bushes, rock-covered terrain, scorching temperatures. A hissing rattlesnake. These are just few of the many perils migrants crossing from Mexico into the southern Arizona desert encounter every day. And far more of them will attempt to cross this summer, the U.S. Border Patrol predicts. The agency unveiled its plans Wednesday for dealing with the problem of immigrants dying in the desert, including 10 new beacons that allow migrants to call for help at the push of a red button. The agency is also adding new hoisting systems on helicopters to rescue immigrants. Officials from the Tucson sector on Wednesday

Benghazi Memo Remarkably Similar

On the morning of September 14th, Jay Carney gave a press briefing in which he addressed the attack in Benghazi at length. There is good reason to think the memo used to prepare Amb. Rice for her television appearances was based substantially on Carney´s briefing notes for that morning. Deb has already made a good start at some of the relevant comparisons here. I wanted to point out that Carney seemed to have delivered on all but one of the "top-lines" in the new document. Here are the White House talking points interspersed with quotes from Carney´s briefing that morning:

One of President Obama’s closest advisers doesn’t want to talk about her secret meetings with wealthy liberal donors this week. White House aide Valerie Jarrett attended this week’s meeting in Chicago of the Democracy Alliance of super rich, liberal donors. But when a reporter for Politico approached Jarrett at the conference and asked her if Democrats were being hypocritical by raising money from wealthy liberals while slamming conservative donors as part of their 2014 election strategy, the aide refused to talk. Ken Vogel of Politico wrote Wednesday: “Democratic attacks on the Koch brothers for secretive campaign spending have

“White privilege.” We’ve heard the phrase used often among left-leaning publications and throughout the esteemed halls of academia. Colleges and universities in America dogmatically teach the narrative that the playing field is unfairly balanced against minorities, while leaving the impression that whites have a cake walk and should not be proud of their achievements. After all, they’ve got it relatively easy. Tal Fortgang is a freshman from New Rochelle, NY who published this remarkable article in The Princeton Tory. It comes via The College Fix: There is a phrase that floats around college campuses, Princeton being no exception, that threatens

President Obama on Wednesday called on voters to punish Senate Republicans who earlier in the day blocked a Democratic proposal that would have raised the federal minimum wage. "If there´s any good news here, it´s [that] Republicans in Congress don´t get the last word on this issue," Obama said. "You do. The American people. The voters." "Change is happening, whether Republicans in Congress like it or not," he added. The Senate voted 54-42 to proceed with the legislation, which would have hiked the pay rate from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour, short of the 60 votes necessary. Sen. Bob Corker

San Antonio, TX -Vanessa Stiviano portrays her life as that of a glamorous jet-setting model - a stunning mixed-race ´philanthropist´ with the world at her feet. Calling herself V. Stiviano, the woman behind the Donald Sterling race hate scandal seems to want for nothing. The 31-year-old lives in an impressive $1.8m condo in an upscale, tree-lined avenue in Los Angeles, close to Beverly Hills. She owns a bright red Ferrari, two top of the line Bentleys, a sporty Range Rover and a designer wardrobe to match - all of it bought for her by the man she eventually brought down.

A report out of the World Bank shows rapidly expanding China is poised to overtake the once invincible United States as the world´s largest economy by the end of 2014. The International Comparison Program looks at exchange rates to reveal purchasing power of different currencies and found that yuan in China will soon pack more punch than the mighty dollar. Meanwhile, Chinese officials bashed the report as flawed, likely for fear of losing its status as a developing nation and the pollution-spewing perks that come with it. Don´t count on it: The once invincible American dollar will slip behind China´s

The 80-year-old Los Angeles Clippers owner has reached out to the attorney of his 31-year-old former mistress, V. Stiviano, begging, “How can we make this go away?” according to a report. Sterling is scrambling to salvage his reputation and hang on to his team after recordings surfaced over the weekend that revealed him launching a racist tirade about Stiviano publicly associating with African-American athletes.

What should the NBA do about Donald Sterling? The answer is easy if you are a columnist, or Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan or LeBron James, or a fan disgusted by the Clippers owner´s racist rant. You can say you are "obviously disgusted" (Jordan), that you will never attend a Clippers game as long as Sterling owns the team (Johnson) or that there is "no room" for Sterling in the NBA (James). You can be proud, knowing you took a stand. But if you are commissioner Adam Silver, the question gets complicated. People demanding that Silver get rid of Sterling

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, has made a commendable attempt to end the rancorous dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. [Snip] Having expended so much effort, it is only natural that Mr Kerry should feel a deep sense of frustration that the talks--as so many predicted--have run into the ground after Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, last week announced the suspension of his country’s participation. This was in response to the united accord struck by Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, with the Islamist Hamas group, which Israel considers a terrorist organisation.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry has stepped in it again — with a gaffe that this time not only makes him look foolish but makes a mess of U.S. foreign policy and destroys any chance he had of realizing his legacy pipe dream of brokering Middle East peace. In a private meeting with senior international officials Friday, Kerry said that if the Israelis and Palestinians can’t achieve a two-state solution, Israel risks becoming “an apartheid state with second-class citizens.” Israelis are aghast — especially with Kerry’s remarks being reported yesterday on Holocaust Remembrance Day — and have started issuing calls for

Why hasn’t Shepard Smith come out yet? The affable Fox News anchor has a longtime boyfriend, ranks among Fox’s most senior talent, and lives in New York City. It could be, of course, that he’s just a very private person, or—as the Times argued in October—that public attitudes have changed and nobody cares if a famous figure is gay. Or it could be that, when Smith tried to come out last year, Fox silenced and punished him. In the summer of 2013, according to multiple sources with knowledge of their exchange, Shepard Smith approached Fox News president Roger Ailes about

The White House says a botched execution of a death row inmate in Oklahoma fell short of the humane standards required when the death penalty is carried out. Officials halted Clayton Lockett´s execution Tuesday when he convulsed violently and tried to lift his head after a doctor declared him unconscious. He later died of an apparent heart attack after spending 40 minutes writhing in pain. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that President Barack Obama believes evidence shows the death penalty doesn´t effectively deter crime. That said, Carney reiterated that Obama believes some crimes are so heinous that the death penalty is

MILWAUKEE — A federal judge in Milwaukee struck down Wisconsin’s voter identification law Tuesday, saying a requirement that voters show a state-issued photo ID at the polls imposes an unfair burden on poor and minority voters. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman sided with opponents of the law, who argued that low-income and minority voters aren’t as likely to have photo IDs or the documents needed to get them. Adelman said the law violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. Adelman’s decision invalidates Wisconsin’s law and could set a precedent for similar legal challenges in Texas, North Carolina and elsewhere.

In an e-mail with the subject line: “Prep Call with Susan,” deputy national security adviser for strategic communications Ben Rhodes wrote that one of the goals before Rice went on the Sunday news shows after the killing of four Americans was to “underscore these

Barack Obama’s Asia tour had the look and feel of a tired, uninterested president simply going through the motions. Other than just showing up, Obama did precious little to advance our interests or demonstrate his oft-promised “pivot” to Asia. The trip was instead overshadowed by Ukraine’s continuing crisis and the collapse of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. And the visit’s real legacy, the spreading impression of U.S. lassitude and weakness, is profoundly dangerous. In particular, Obama made no progress on Asia’s most pressing issue, Beijing’s assertive territorial claims in the East and South China Seas, thus missing a significant chance to deter future Chinese belligerence.
