Soul of Mad Magazine,
Al Feldstein Dies at 88

New York Times, by Bruce Weber

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 5/1/2014 2:18:34 AM

Al Feldstein, who took over a fledgling humor magazine called Mad in 1956 and made it a popular, profitable and enduring wellspring of American satire, died on Tuesday at his ranch in Paradise Valley, Mont. He was 88. His wife, the former Michelle Key, confirmed the death. In recent years, he was a wildlife and landscape painter in Montana, outside Livingston. (Snip) The founding editor, Harvey Kurtzman, established its well-informed irreverence, but Mr. Feldstein gave Mad its identity as a smart-alecky, sniggering and indisputably clever spitball-shooter of a publication with a scattershot look, dominated by gifted cartoonists of wildly

I loved Mad Magazine of the 1960s. My brother had a huge collection. I actually learned a lot from them...ironically. While it was satire and parodies, it exposed me to movies, songs, political characters and all sorts of things that made me curious to find out more about. I would do anything to have my brother´s old collection again. Rest in peace, Big Al.

My brother and I loved Mad, too. I especially loved Spy vs. Spy and The Lighter Side.

Mom cleaned house and all our Mads and comics went out in the trash. What I´d give to have them today!

Loved those furshlugginer mad magazines, especially the movie parodies and folding back covers. Still have a couple around, collecting dust.

I agree with #1, that Mad introduced me to a wider culture outside the parochial South Texas society I grew up in. How else would I have picked up basic Yiddish expressions, for instance?

I still remember the Bullit movie satire, and the bad guys in a VW Bug doing a "now"..."not now" etc. gag with the shotgun during the car chase.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger underwent heart surgery to replace an aortic valve at a New York hospital Tuesday, according to a hospital statement. Kissinger, 91, served as national security adviser and secretary of state during the Nixon administration. He remained secretary of state through the short Ford presidency and held the adviser position for part of that administration. "He is resting comfortably," a New York-Presbyterian Hospital statement said. Kissinger has a history of heart trouble, including undergoing a triple coronary bypass in 1982 and an angioplasty procedure in 2005. Born in Germany, he came to the

Echoes of a Strongman in Baghdad Today

Baghdad - The ghost of Saddam Hussein still hangs over Iraq like a cloud stalking a sunny day; it doesn’t always cover the sun, but it never quite goes away. Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s slide into strongman territory in the years since American troops left has been well documented. His government and security forces have harassed Sunni Arabs with baseless arrests, or by keeping them in jail beyond their mandated terms. And for Sunni militants caught by the security forces, summary execution has become increasingly common. Even as his Shiite-dominated government has been condemned for abusing Sunnis, however,

California is embarking on a first-of-its-kind attempt to improve the academic lives of foster youth by giving schools more money to meet their special learning and emotional needs and holding educators and administrators accountable. But first, officials have to figure out how many school-age foster children they have and where they are enrolled in a state that´s home to nearly one-fifth of the nation´s foster children. Until now, no state has attempted to identify every foster child in its public schools or to systematically track their progress, much less funnel funds toward those students or require school districts to show they are spending

Last week I explained in a Think Tank post why I thought Ms. Palin’s idea is a very bad one. I want to return to Ms. Palin’s recommendation in order to make a broader point about conservatism. Ms. Palin is not only championing the impeachment of President Obama; she also was a cheerleader for the tactic that led to the government shutdown last October. That turned out to be a disaster for the GOP and conservatism, and it achieved nothing useful.

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
