House Budget Committee to
Hold Hearing on Poverty

New York Times, by Annie Lowrey

Original Article

Posted By:PChristopher, 5/1/2014 2:14:23 AM

Is the federal government responsible for lifting millions of Americans out of poverty or trapping them in it? That question has become a political Rorschach test this year, the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s war on poverty. On Wednesday, Representative Paul D. Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, is holding a third hearing on the government and the poor, featuring testimony from the “front lines.” In recent months, Mr. Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, has loudly argued that the government has failed in its effort to end deprivation and ensure mobility.

Comments:
The Government hasn´t ended deprivation or ensured mobility because it doesn´t really want to...the Government needs victims in order to ensure their own power. And when was the last time anyone here ever heard of a "War On" anything working? Poverty? Drugs? We´ve got more of both since those wars began. Guess where the war on ´Terror´ is going.

It´s time to talk about poverty among the elderly, not those milking it with free stuff thrown at them daily, and again on tax returns.

It´s time to talk about homeless vets getting what they deserve for serving this country.

Rep. Charles Rangel declared victory Tuesday night in his quest for a 23rd term, after outpolling persistent rival Adriano Espaillat in the bitter Harlem Democratic primary. “This is your victory, this is your congressman! Thank you so very much,” Rangel said to raucous supporters at the Taino Towers gymnasium in East Harlem. (Snip) And woe to those who had ditched Charlie. Earlier Tuesday, a confident Rangel said that the political and labor leaders who abandoned him during the race “made one hell of a mistake” — ¬implying that he might not be willing to forgive and forget.

Anger explodes over treatment of Bergdahl’s

For all the yellow ribbons strewn across his hometown in Idaho and the gratitude expressed by his parents in an emotional visit to the White House on Saturday, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will receive a hero’s welcome when he returns to the United States after nearly five years in Taliban captivity. From military forums across the country, a groundswell of anger is rising over the Obama administration’s silence on perhaps the most controversial question surrounding the deal that freed Bergdahl in exchange for five senior Taliban members: Was he a deserter?

"I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." -- Wimpy from Popeye "I won´t pull the football away this time, Charlie Brown!" -- Lucy, Charlie Brown Those are long running laugh lines in the comics and readers are supposed to roll their eyes as they hear those words. Maybe Americans just aren´t as smart as they used to be because the Obama Administration continually offers up excuses that are just as lame while even professional journalists take it seriously. Granted, politicians lying and making excuses is as old as mankind, but Obama´s every bit as artless

Over at the Free Beacon, Sonny Bunch has a nifty little piece arguing that FX’s little watched yet highly praised “The Americans” is the most reactionary show on television. And while he makes a good case, I’d contend there’s an odd, unnoticed glut of conservative-friendly TV these days, particularly on premium cable. First, let’s take “The Americans,” an excellent show about Soviet spies raising a family in the Virginia suburbs during the Reagan era. “Phillip” and “Elizabeth” are both Russian-born deep-cover KGB saboteurs who have been trained to speak and act like everyday Americans. Together they run a travel agency

STEVE WYNN: Artists, actors, people like that, they live in a very strange bubble of their own. They´re mollycoddled, they´re highly privileged. We are talking about successful artists like George [Clooney] or Barbra Streisand or any other really successful performing artist. They live in a relatively small world. The people around them are very solicitous and caring for them. They have a worldview that is, therefore, everything should be given to everybody because everything has been given to them. If you run a business, if you are responsible for a lot of people, you come to grips

Dozens of students plan to protest at Smith College on Thursday due to what they say is the women’s school’s refusal to make its admissions process more inclusive for transgender women after students’ negotiations with administrators failed. The Northampton, Mass., school came under fire last spring for its admissions policy after Calliope Wong, a transgender woman, was rejected because a federal student aid form identified her as male, even though she identifies as female. Since then, activists from the Smith Q&A student organization have pressed administrators to make a key change to the policy

The names of the six-member jury panel that acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin have been made public for the first time, after a new court order, records show. Circuit Judge Debra Nelson, who had previously ordered the jurors´ identifying information be kept confidential, granted access to the names in a ruling March 21. Zimmerman´s defense asked the judge in June to keep the names secret until six months after the verdict. (Snip) Attempts to reach the jurors by phone and in-person Thursday were unsuccessful.

Megyn Kelly faced off with former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers in an explosive interview tonight in which Kelly repeatedly confronted Ayers about bombings and killings that the radical group was reportedly involved in. Kelly asked Ayers how many bombings he was personally responsible for. Ayers declined to answer, but did acknowledge the “terrible risk” they took with some of their more out-there tactics. Kelly grilled him on how the Weather Underground “declared a state of war against the U.S. government” and encouraged violence. Kelly went through a series of instances in which the Weather Underground was tied to bombings and killings,

The Keystone Pipeline project was expected to create tens of thousands of high paying jobs in the oil industry. The project itself would create 20,000 construction jobs. And the pipeline would bring oil from Canada and North Dakota to refineries in the United States. The proposed project would have extended from Alberta, Canada to Illinois, transporting approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Estimated cost is $1.7 billion. But Obama rejected the plan in 2011 and 2014. Democrats are beholden to the radical green movement – the poor and middle class be damned. Now this… Canada pulled the plug on Keystone and will

As thousands of disease-riddled criminals storm across our borders, is it really time to mince words? President Obama appears to have an Agenda for America that stinks worse than a Border Patrol bus depot crammed with urine-drenched illegals. Is the man trying to protect and defend us, or does he want us to kick the bucket, run down the curtain, and join the choir invisible? On January 29, 2014, the Department of Homeland Security advertised for a vendor to escort 65,000 “unaccompanied alien children,” indicating that they not only knew the alien invasion was coming, they planned it.

Today, the Supreme Court ruled in the nationally followed Hobby Lobby case. The for-profit corporations that brought these cases to the Supreme Court—a craft store and a cabinet manufacturer—argued that the corporations’ religious convictions should excuse them from compensating their employees through the comprehensive health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers sought to exclude insurance coverage of several forms of birth control because, contrary to medical and scientific evidence, the corporations’ owners believe some birth control causes abortions. The Affordable Care Act already includes special arrangements for houses of worship and religious non-profits, like schools and hospitals. Houses

One week after traveling to Mississippi to do his utmost to help Senator Thad Cochran (R) beat Tea Party rival Chris McDaniel, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) talked about the strengths he saw in Cochran´s approach to campaigning. According to AZ Central, McCain dismissed criticism over the tactics the Republican Establishment used to get black Democrats to cross over and vote for Cochran. Said McCain, "There are some people complaining that African-American voters voted. [But] I thought one of the major priorities of the Republican Party was to get all minority and ethnic voters out to vote for Republicans." He described Cochran´s "get-out-the-vote campaign"

The Israeli Air Force carried out what it called "precision strikes" on 34 "terror targets" in the Gaza Strip overnight, after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped in the West Bank earlier this month. The Israeli Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to rockets being launched earlier into Israel from Gaza. The waves of rockets from Gaza and IDF retaliations have picked up since the teens were kidnapped and the Israeli crackdown began. Hamas has not claimed responsibility for launching the rockets but Israel holds them responsible for everything coming out of Gaza. The Israel Defense

What we have been able to assess so far ... is that there is a problem that has been exposed, which is that there are now a group of women of an indeterminate size who no longer have access to free contraceptive coverage simply

President Barack Obama announced today that he would again go around Congress to enact immigration reform measures. In a hastily scheduled statement this afternoon from the White House Rose Garden, Obama said he would ´greatly prefer´ Congress passing any sort of immigration reform legislation, even if it wasn´t the bill he supports, but he was done sitting around waiting for that to happen. The president said his administration would ´refocus´ its efforts on the border, and he would use his ´existing legal authority´ to do ´what Congress refuses to do´ and fix the broken immigration system. The President said he
