Here’s What Happens When the
GOP Takes Over the Senate

Daily Beast, by Michael Tomasky

Original Article

From abortion bans to Obamacare cuts to, maybe, an empty Supreme Court chair, the Republicans already know exactly what they’ll do if they get control of both houses of Congress. Passing a federal law banning almost all abortions after 20 weeks. Defunding parts of Obamacare. Weakening the Environmental Protection Agency. Kneecapping the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Elizabeth Warren’s baby, the new agency within the Fed to police consumer fraud. And—maybe, just maybe—letting a Supreme Court seat sit vacant until after the next presidential election. That’s just the start of what happens if the Republicans win back the Senate this November. Imagine, posits

Can not hapen soon enough - time to get this once great country out from the claws of big government and return to state rights.

The people in each state and not some government flunky in DC should be setting the rules and regulations.

It´s nice he knows what the Republicans will do.

Though I smile at the thought of some of his rantings, history has shown me that the currant Republican Elite will not DO anything of substance. They may even make the mistake they made years ago and allow the Dems to Chair Committees and occupy the larger offices.

They were So Nice. Where or what did it accomplish ????

I´ve listened and listened to Mitch. He´s very careful and says little out loud where anyone but insider/donors can hear.

Mitch´s first priority is to be Majority Leader. That is his only goal. After that...not much. He´ll undo everything Harry Reid has done...read he´ll make the Senate nicer for Democrats.

If there aren´t a bunch of conservaties elected....nothing will change. You just won´t be watching Harry Reid. You probably won´t hear from much from Mitch either...he plays everything close to the vest with little or no vision.

Sorry, folks, he´ll be a bad leader. Amnesty, open borders, higher debt ceiling, large deficits and he will not repeal Obamacare...he thinks it´s working in Kentucky!

Mitch will not rewrite bills between cloture and the formal Senate vote. That would allow defunding ObamaCare. Another option would be to clarify for the Supreme Court what Congress meant when they passed the Clear Air Act, the Clean Water Act and ObamaCare.

They did not mean for CO2 to be regulated as a pollutant. They did intend the regulatory threshold to changed at EPA´s discretion. They did not intend for eastern states to be treated differently from western states in order to lower their cost of achieving compliance with changing rules. They did intend that the NAAQS be the level that was safe, and that this level would only change when significant new evidence proved that the level must be lower. Along similar lines they meant for the Clean Water Act to protect navigable waterways and not puddle following a large rain.

The first thing that the Republicans would likely do is put the Senate rules back where they were, before the Democrats used the nuclear option to change them, so that the Democrats could more easily filibuster Republican judicial nominees. As long as you give the GOP a foreign war somewhere they are quite content with totalitarian socialism. If the GOP didn´t exist Tomasky and his fellow propagandists would have to invent them or they might have to write about what a mess their side has made of things.

The reluctance of Hamas’s “military wing”—a misnomer for the more extreme elements of its extremist leadership—to accept the cease-fire designed by Egypt is, well, logical. Let’s admit it. They do not wish to accept defeat, and the Egyptian terms are a defeat for Hamas. By attacking Israel, what has Hamas wrought? Considerable damage was done to Gaza by Israeli air power, and Gazans will be picking up the pieces for months if not longer. But Hamas proved unable to kill one single Israeli with its hundreds of rockets, and all its special tricks—tunnels, longer-range rockets, a drone—also failed. Nor could

House Republicans are moving quickly to address the growing humanitarian crisis on the southern border, possibly holding votes as soon as next week. As Congress moves closer to the monthlong August recess, the speedy action sends a clear message to Senate Democrats: Take it or leave it. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), incoming Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and a group of top lawmakers working on the border crisis are set to file a bill that very closely mirrors the legislation crafted by Texas lawmakers Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, and Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Two of the larger social trends of our time — the growth of payday gambling and the legalization of marijuana — have two things in common: They are justified as the expansion of personal liberty, and they serve the interests of an expanding government. The ideological alliance behind these changes is among the strangest in U.S. politics. Libertarians seek to lift governmental restraints on consensual acts. State governments seek sources of revenue without the political inconvenience of requesting broad tax increases. Both find common ground in encouraging and exploiting the weaknesses and addictions of citizens. (And business interests and their lobbyists,

That same consensus also holds that if the GOP does indeed take control, the next two years will be marked by confrontation with the White House and even less actual legislative action than the present Congress has accomplished. To be fair, there is some compelling logic behind these conclusions. President Obama has clearly opted out of the role of governing through legislation.
