Nigel Farage is nobody´s fool
Telegraph [UK], by Janet Daley

Original Article

Anybody who thought Nigel Farage would be a nine-day wonder blowhard had better start rethinking the strategy. The man has got his head screwed on. Not only did he make the right decision over not running in the Newark by-election but his party actually told the truth (!!) about why they were refraining. To have run and not won--or worse, to have run and not even come a very plausible second to the Conservatives--would well and truly have "burst the bubble" of their current stupendous rise. So they will suffer the momentary embarrassment of being called "frit" by a relieved Tory

Severe weather, including thunderstorms, flash floods, and wind gusts, is expected on Wednesday - just as thousands try to recover from a series of tornadoes that hit Arkansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. The poor conditions are likely to hit states along much of the East Coast. According to a forecast by AccuWeather, thunderstorms may strike northern Florida, southeastern Alabama, as well as parts of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Ohio. [Snip] The report says that further north, Delaware, southeastern Michigan and southern New Jersey may experience thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon. Later that night,

Donald Trump told MailOnline on Tuesday that he wasn´t mistaken when he said Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling ´got set up´ by a vindictive girlfriend, but blames partisan media outlets for turning the offhand comment into a publicity firestorm. ´It was a total set-up,´ he insisted during an interview in his Trump Tower office. ´The girl set him up, in my opinion. [Snip] At the end of that interview, he declared that Vanessa Stiviano, who allegedly made the now-infamous recording, was ´the girlfriend from hell, and that Sterling ´got set up by a very, very bad girlfriend, let´s face

After years of castigating Barack Obama for his economic stewardship and his health insurance overhaul, real estate billionaire Donald Trump has cut the president some slack. [Snip] ´You could say the only thing would be the execution of the man who knocked down the World Trade Center,´ Trump told MailOnline Tuesday, referring to the Navy SEAL raid that took out terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011. Then, with an abrupt head-turn, Trump took a deep breath. But in all fairness, that was the military that was after him for years,´ he said. ´The guys that got him

It brings civil law, where a man was only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners. Controversy surrounded an amendment to the bill, supported by many male MPs, allowing men to take more wives without consulting existing spouses. Traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval. ´Demeaning´ Last month, female MPs walked out of parliament in disgust after their male counterparts voted through the amendment. They argued that a decision to take on another wife would affect the whole family, including the financial position of other spouses. The bill was also opposed by Christian leaders who

Gunmen have stormed Libya´s parliament, forcing MPs to abandon a vote on a new prime minister, officials say. Correspondents say lawmakers left the building after hearing gunshots. [Snip] Libya has been plagued by instability since armed groups toppled Muammar Gaddafi´s regime in 2011. Earlier reports that several people had been wounded in the attack on Tuesday are unconfirmed. It is unclear who was behind the disturbance. The BBC´s Rana Jawad in Tripoli says Libya´s national congress has been stormed on dozens of occasions by gunmen over the past year and a half.

Nigel Farage could become an MP within weeks after a disgraced Tory back-bencher quit over a cash for questions investigation, triggering a by-election. Patrick Mercer, the MP for Newark, stepped down after it emerged that he will about to be suspended from the Commons six months following an investigation by The Telegraph and the BBC´s Panorama. [Snip] Even if Mr Farage loses, it would give him the opportunity to embarass the Conservatives before standing again in 2015. He said: "If it´s after May 22nd [the date of the European elections] I will give it serious consideration."

The tense moment a weatherman was forced to flee a Mississippi television studio seconds before a a massive tornado hit, was broadcast to the station´s viewers. WTVA Chief Meteorologist Matt Laubhan was reporting on the damaging twister as it approached Tulepo yesterday - one of numerous Southern cities rocked by a string of tornadoes which have killed at least 30 people. During the broadcast, Laubhan switched to the station´s tower camera, which showed a dark cloud cloud approaching. ´Basement, now. During a Boeing shareholder meeting on Monday,a conservative activist accused the aircraft company´s CEO of buying then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton´s ´commercial advocacy´ in Russia by making a $900,000 donation to the Clinton Foundation. The money was earmarked for rebuilding schools in Haiti in the wake of a devastating 2010 earthquake. But the contribution came just months after Mrs. Clinton traveled to Moscow where she made what she called a ´shameless pitch´ to ask a newly formed state-owned airline ´to buy Boeing aircraft.´ [Snip] Boeing ultimately won a $3.7 billion Russian contract.

Over the weekend, a candidate was arrested for addressing his potential voters. Clear aside the incidental details, scrape away the mitigating circumstances, and ponder that elemental fact. Paul Weston, standing for election to the European Parliament (against me, as it happens, in the South East) was arrested in the middle of a speech on the steps of the Winchester Guildhall. To repeat, a candidate was arrested for making a hustings speech. [Snip] It is perfectly true that the candidate was attempting to provoke. He almost certainly set out with the intention of getting himself in trouble, thereby publicising his message

Secretary of State John Kerry has said he chose the wrong word in describing Israel´s potential future after being criticised for saying the Jewish state could become an ´apartheid state´ if it does not reach a peace deal with the Palestinians. In a statement released yesterday by the State Department, Kerry lashed out against ´partisan political´ attacks against him, but acknowledged his comments last week to a closed international forum could have been misinterpreted. He pointedly did not apologize for the remarks, but stressed he was, and is, a strong supporter of Israel, which he called a ´vibrant democracy.´

With his “gold-digger” ex-girlfriend holding 100 hours of damning, unreleased tape recordings, babbling billionaire bigot Donald Sterling is pleading for the mercy rule. The 80-year-old Los Angeles Clippers owner has reached out to the attorney of his 31-year-old former mistress, V. Stiviano, begging, “How can we make this go away?” according to a report. Sterling is scrambling to salvage his reputation and hang on to his team after recordings surfaced over the weekend that revealed him launching a racist tirade about Stiviano publicly associating with African-American athletes.

What should the NBA do about Donald Sterling? The answer is easy if you are a columnist, or Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan or LeBron James, or a fan disgusted by the Clippers owner´s racist rant. You can say you are "obviously disgusted" (Jordan), that you will never attend a Clippers game as long as Sterling owns the team (Johnson) or that there is "no room" for Sterling in the NBA (James). You can be proud, knowing you took a stand. But if you are commissioner Adam Silver, the question gets complicated. People demanding that Silver get rid of Sterling

Knicks executive and former player Larry Johnson had a decidedly different but still strong reaction to the racially insensitive remarks Clippers owner Donald Sterling is alleged to have made. On Saturday night, Johnson tweeted: “Black people your Focusing on the wrong thing. We should be focusing on having our own, Own team own League! To For Self!!’’ The initial indication was Johnson was calling for an all-African-American league complete with black ownership. It wasn’t the first time Johnson, who is black, concerned himself with the fact the NBA’s ownership is mostly white while its players are mostly black.

Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Corp´s decision to move its North American sales headquarters from California to Texas was met by disbelief in Torrance, this Los Angeles exurb where the Japanese car manufacturer has run its U.S. operations since 1982. Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, looking grim, said outside city hall on Monday that he had been blindsided by the move. John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, has made a commendable attempt to end the rancorous dispute between Israel and the Palestinians. [Snip] Having expended so much effort, it is only natural that Mr Kerry should feel a deep sense of frustration that the talks--as so many predicted--have run into the ground after Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, last week announced the suspension of his country’s participation. This was in response to the united accord struck by Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, with the Islamist Hamas group, which Israel considers a terrorist organisation.

When Sonia Sotamayor, the self-proclaimed ´wise Latina´ was nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court, I was asked to write an op-ed because of our similar backgrounds. I am about ten years her senior and those ten years and the different paths we took explain the wide gulf between our political perspectives, however, I had hopes that her early years in Catholic schools would have left a deeper impression on her principles. Alas, her diatribe about the recent anti-affirmative action ruling by the court confirmed the fact that her indoctrination at Princeton and Yale as a liberal whiner was successful.

Ms. Lerner headed the division that handled the groups’ applications for tax-exempt status, and is at the center of congressional investigations. Ms. Lerner has twice declined

MILWAUKEE — A federal judge in Milwaukee struck down Wisconsin’s voter identification law Tuesday, saying a requirement that voters show a state-issued photo ID at the polls imposes an unfair burden on poor and minority voters. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman sided with opponents of the law, who argued that low-income and minority voters aren’t as likely to have photo IDs or the documents needed to get them. Adelman said the law violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. Adelman’s decision invalidates Wisconsin’s law and could set a precedent for similar legal challenges in Texas, North Carolina and elsewhere.
