Donetsk - The mayor of Ukraine´s second largest city was fighting for his life on Monday after an assassination attempt in broad daylight and an eruption of street violence in Donetsk dragged the east of the country further into chaos. Gennady Kernes, who has been mayor of the eastern city of Kharkiv since 2010, was out jogging when he was shot in the back at about midday local time. The attempted murder came as pro-Russian militia seized police buildings in yet another town in the Donetsk region, consolidating their hold on a strategic highway around the town of Slavyansk. Story of four-year-old’s near-death

When doctors told preacher Todd Burpo his four-year-old son was going to die from a burst appendix he railed against God for taking him to heaven too soon. What he did not expect was that little Colton would not only survive his near-death experience on the operating table but would come back full of stories of the angels and rainbows he had seen while unconscious. He told his parents that while visiting heaven he met John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary, and sat at Jesus’s knee. His extraordinary claims have now been turned into a film, Heaven is for Real, which

President Obama confuses high enrollment numbers with success on Obamacare, ignoring the obvious fact that millions of Americans are signed up but not sold. "The point is, the repeal debate is and should be over. The Affordable Care Act is working," the president said while announcing the enrollment of more than 8 million Americans. That is not the point. The debate is not over. The fact is that Americans are required under the ACA to obtain health insurance or pay a tax. After a rocky launch, the administration cleared the first and easiest hurdle in a long road to implementation: Enforcing a

When Sonia Sotamayor, the self-proclaimed ´wise Latina´ was nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court, I was asked to write an op-ed because of our similar backgrounds. I am about ten years her senior and those ten years and the different paths we took explain the wide gulf between our political perspectives, however, I had hopes that her early years in Catholic schools would have left a deeper impression on her principles. Alas, her diatribe about the recent anti-affirmative action ruling by the court confirmed the fact that her indoctrination at Princeton and Yale as a liberal whiner was successful.

NEW YORK — Rep. Michael G. Grimm (R-N.Y.) surrendered Monday morning to federal authorities in New York as he faces multiple charges connected to a restaurant business he operated before entering Congress in 2011, according to sources familiar with the long-running probe into the lawmaker’s finances. Grimm spent much of the weekend hunkered down, bracing for the unveiling of the federal charges, which were due to be disclosed after his surrender. He turned himself in to the FBI at an undisclosed location Monday morning and was taken to Lower Manhattan for processing. The charges stem from his ownership of a Manhattan

Last year, as the launch date for Obamacare´s insurance exchanges drew closer, Oregon was held up by the law´s supporters as a model of a state that was doing things right. Liberals touted the Oregon´s whole-hearted embrace of Obamacare and its effort to recruit young participants with an ad featuring a folk singer with an acoustic guitar. A Washington Post article described Cover Oregon as “the White House´s favorite health exchange.” But a funny thing happened on the way to nirvana. Oregon´s health insurance exchange turned out to be the most dysfunctional one in the United States, and last Friday

For almost two years, New York State has been an unwilling participant in a federal program called Secure Communities. State and local enforcement have been submitting the fingerprints of everyone they arrest to a database maintained by the federal government. The program is supposed to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identify aliens who have committed serious crimes or pose a threat to public safety and should be deported. It has failed miserably. Time and again, President Obama has promised to deport only the “criminals” and “gangbangers.” But numbers speak louder than words. Donald Sterling´s own wife last night condemned him as as racist, as the embattled LA Clippers owner fights to keep his place in the NBA amid growing outrage over hate-filled comments he was recorded making about black players. Wife Rochelle, who attended the Clippers game last night and saw Sterling´s players stage a powerful protest in which they wore their jerseys inside out for the warm-up, said her husband´s comments were small-minded and despicable. Her comments added more fire to growing outrage among players and fans over Sterling´s comments in which he told his 31-year-old girlfriend V. Stiviano not to bring black

Yesterday I wrote a piece on President Obama’s staggering record of failure, including in the foreign-policy arena. Events in the last 24 hours appear to reinforce my case. Here is a story from the front page of today’s New York Times, hardly a right-wing outlet. It’s worth quoting at length: President Obama encountered setbacks to two of his most cherished foreign-policy projects on Thursday, as he failed to achieve a trade deal that undergirds his strategic pivot to Asia and the Middle East peace process suffered a potentially irreparable breakdown.

Before her recent resignation from CBS, Sharyl Attkisson was a mainstream news star. Multiple Emmys. CNN anchor, CBS anchor on stories about space exploration. Host of CBS’ News Up to the Minute. PBS host for Health Week. Investigative reporter for CBS. Attkisson dug deep into Fast&Furious, Benghazi, and the ill-effects of vaccines. Too deep. Her bosses shut her down and didn’t air key stories. She now has her own website, sharylattkisson.com. CNN host Chris Cuomo challenged Bundy to concede that even if he is truly concerned about the well-being of blacks, his musing about whether “the Negro” was “better off as slaves, picking cotton” was offensive on a racial level. “I didn’t say it to offend them,” Bundy asserted. “I was trying to ask a question, and

Knicks executive and former player Larry Johnson had a decidedly different but still strong reaction to the racially insensitive remarks Clippers owner Donald Sterling is alleged to have made. On Saturday night, Johnson tweeted: “Black people your Focusing on the wrong thing. We should be focusing on having our own, Own team own League! It wasn’t the first time Johnson, who is black, concerned himself with the fact the NBA’s ownership is mostly white while its players are mostly black.

Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Corp´s decision to move its North American sales headquarters from California to Texas was met by disbelief in Torrance, this Los Angeles exurb where the Japanese car manufacturer has run its U.S. operations since 1982. Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, looking grim, said outside city hall on Monday that he had been blindsided by the move. A few feet away sat Pat Simpson, a Torrance resident for over 60 years, with her head in her hands. "Why do they want to tear this place apart?" Simpson, 72, asked. A lawyer representing former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner is requesting a chance to plead her case against a planned House vote to hold her in contempt of Congress. On Friday, Majority Leader Eric Cantor said in a memo to members that the House of Representatives would vote in May to hold Ms. Lerner in contempt of Congress over her refusal to testify before a congressional committee about IRS targeting of conservative groups. Ms. Lerner headed the division that handled the groups’ applications for tax-exempt status, and is at the center of congressional investigations. Ms. Lerner has twice declined

It’s been two years since I broke the story that Harvard University identified Sen. Elizabeth Warren as a minority — citing her alleged Native American roots — but we’re still in the dark. We’ve had two years of Warren’s simplistic answers that aren’t really answers. Two years of Warren insisting she’s proud of her heritage while dismissing questions about it. And two years of her refusal to open up records that could prove whether she used that heritage claim in Ivy League applications. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus used yesterday’s anniversary to call on Warren — whose book tour has heightened

Larry Johnson was a junior college transfer who became the top star of the 1989-1991 Running Rebels of UNLV, leading them to two final four appearances and one championship. He later had a successful ten year NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets and the New York Knicks. In 1993, Johnson signed what was at the time the most lucrative NBA contract in history -- $84 million over 12 years. Nevertheless Johnson apparently believes that NBA players, despite their compensation levels, are still slaves to their white masters, and wants a new all black league. Black students at schools in Wichita and surrounding districts are disciplined at higher rates than their white peers, a trend that mirrors racial disparities throughout the country, according to the most comprehensive survey of school civil rights data in nearly 15 years. The findings, part of an expansive survey of America’s public schools by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, shows that black students are more likely than whites to be suspended or expelled at middle and high schools in Wichita and most area districts. Education officials say it’s difficult to pinpoint reasons for the disparities. But

Washington - When Hillary Clinton arrived in Boston last week to speak to a group of female business executives, she made no mention of her presumed presidential ambitions, but offered her high-powered audience a piece of intriguing advice: “Women have to support other women.” It may have sounded like harmless sisterly solidarity, but little that Clinton says these days escapes scrutiny for ulterior motives. Perhaps her words were a warning to another formidable Democrat who has suddenly emerged as a perversely complicating factor in Clinton’s long-awaited march on the White House. It escaped few observers in Washington
