TUPELO, Miss. -- Tornadoes flattened homes and businesses, flipped trucks over on highways and bent telephone poles into 45-degree angles as they barreled through Alabama and Mississippi on Monday, part of a storm system that killed at least 10 people in the South and brought the overall death toll from two days of severe weather in the country to at least 27. Extremely severe weather was still moving through the Birmingham, Ala. area early Tuesday, according to CBS Birmingham affiliate WIAT-TV. Tens of thousands of customers were without power in Alabama and Mississippi, as well as Kentucky, which did not report tornadoes

Sarah Palin gave a speech to members of the National Rifle Association, gathered in Indianapolis this weekend. She said something that struck me as sacrilegious. I’ve long defended Palin against the offensive treatment she’s received at the hands of a blatantly biased media, a media that collectively lost its mind the moment she entered the national stage. But that hardly means she must be defended at all times. What did she say? Here’s how The Hill reports it: “They obviously have information on plots to carry out Jihad,” she said at the National Rifle Association (NRA) annual meeting on Saturday evening, referring

Humiliated Silda scores millions

Eliot Spitzer’s hooker-loving ways have cost him big — with ex-wife Silda scoring a $7.5 million cash payout and a steady stream of payments to maintain her luxurious lifestyle as part of their divorce, The Post has learned. A “postnuptial” agreement promises 56-year-old Silda a lifetime of ease in exchange for the years of humiliation she endured married to the former governor, who resigned in disgrace after being revealed as “Client No. 9” in a federal prostitution probe. In addition to a $7.5 million settlement dubbed a “lump sum” but payable over seven years, Silda also gets $240,000 a year in maintenance

John Kerry´s statement that Israel could become an "apartheid state" means the secretary of state should resign from his job, the Emergency Committee for Israel said in a statement: On Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry raised the specter of Israel as an "apartheid state." Even Barack Obama condemned the use of this term when running for president in 2008. Yet this was no gaffe. Secretary Kerry´s musings on the Jewish state´s dire future have become a regular feature of his public remarks. His latest prediction follows other statements in recent months that have in effect threatened Israel -- never the Palestinians

It was a historic bit of cable-news thematic knitting: On his eponymous Fox News program last night, Sean Hannity last night managed to pull off a 10-minute segment comprehending Cliven Bundy’s racism, eminent domain, Benghazi and Jon Stewart. Teeing up the segment was the news development on Thursday that Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher that Hannity has supported for weeks via numerous segments on “Hannity,” had said some racist remarks in the presence of New York Times reporter Adam Nagourney. Speaking of “Negroes,” Bundy proclaimed, ““They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned

Worried your dinner is hurting the environment? It might be time to set aside the steak and reach for a cricket. Pound-for-pound, crickets pack more protein than cows, chickens, pigs, and the rest of the mammals and birds we´ve come to associate with barnyards. And their smaller footprint—both literally and environmentally—makes them a candidate for a more sustainable food source. Put down 100 grams worth of pure cricket and you´ve just ingested 69 grams of protein. That´s compared with 43 grams of protein in dried beef protein or 31 grams of protein in identical servings of chicken. The insects also contain essential

Media Matters founder David Brock said Sunday that he’s grateful for progressive billionaire George Soros’ “generosity” and confirmed that he chooses to “pursue” journalists if he “starts to see patterns” in their work. Brock, his silver mane and bizarre vocal intonations lending him the likeness of a socially awkward Bond villain, sat in San Francisco for a softball interview with CNN’s Reliable Sources to respond to the controversy surrounding former CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson. The liberal smear machine Media Matters has been hammering the brilliant female investigative reporter with the term “shoddy reporting” to describe her exposes on Obama administration

What took the NBA so long? Can there be any suit in the league who didn’t know Donald Sterling was — and has been for years — a nut job waiting to splatter? ‘‘We will move extraordinarily quickly,’’ NBA commissioner Adam Silver said of the league’s investigation of and possible sanctions against Sterling, the Los Angeles Clippers owner who allegedly made racist comments that were shared by TMZ on Friday night. Sports Illustrated contributor Franz Lidz is an old, trusted friend of mine, and when he wrote an in-depth story about Sterling back in the April 17, 2000, edition of the magazine, that

Actually, Paul the younger did more to distance himself from his Dad, than he did GOP moderate Susan Collins. SANDY — Utah´s three Republican Congressmen easily won their party´s nomination at the GOP State Convention Saturday, as did Mia Love in her second bid for the 4th District seat held by Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson. Love´s 2012 race against Matheson, who is not seeking re-election, attracted national attention and earned the then-Saratoga Springs mayor a coveted speaking spot at the Republican National Convention. Love secured a spot on this November´s ballot by defeating retired businessman Bob Fuehr with the support of more than 78 percent of the delegates in the new district that includes much of western Salt Lake and Utah

Bundy is just the lightning rod of the moment, just as Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame was before him, and Paula Deen before that. Meanwhile Racism 2.0 is busily working in the shadows, gerrymandering away voting rights and creating legislation that makes pre-emptively shooting dead a young black man who makes you nervous synonymous with standing one’s ground. The longer the media allow ignorant relics like Bundy to continue to hog the spotlight — and the public points at him as the face of conservative racism — the longer the current incarnation can go unchecked… During the height of the recession,

The double whammy of failure pushed the growing Russian menace in Europe to inside pages, but even they were chock-full of reports about utopia gone wrong. VATICAN CITY -- Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the Vatican on Sunday for a historic day of four popes, with Francis and Benedict XVI honoring their predecessors John XXIII and John Paul II and declaring them saints in the first ever canonization of two pontiffs. While the ceremony itself was remarkable, it was Benedict´s presence that added to its historic nature: Never before has a reigning and retired pope celebrated Mass together in public, much less an event honoring two of their most famous predecessors. Benedict´s presence was also a reflection of the balancing act that Francis envisioned

Knicks executive and former player Larry Johnson had a decidedly different but still strong reaction to the racially insensitive remarks Clippers owner Donald Sterling is alleged to have made. On Saturday night, Johnson tweeted: “Black people your Focusing on the wrong thing. We should be focusing on having our own, Own team own League! Economists attribute a host of micro and macro factors to explaining the accelerated gains of top earners. A new study by an international team of economists led by

Rand Paul spoke at Harvard’s Kennedy Institute of Politics Friday, and he talked about his libertarian tendencies as well as his desire to broaden the GOP to welcome more people in. He described himself as “libertarian-ish,” in that despite his very clear libertarian political leanings, he’s generally supported fellow Republicans and hasn’t really backed Libertarian party candidates (save for his father during his 1988 presidential run). Paul, according to CNN, also talked about making the Republican party “bigger” and much more inclusive, saying that unless Republicans “broaden their message” to reach more people, winning future elections is going to be a

Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Corp´s decision to move its North American sales headquarters from California to Texas was met by disbelief in Torrance, this Los Angeles exurb where the Japanese car manufacturer has run its U.S. operations since 1982. Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, looking grim, said outside city hall on Monday that he had been blindsided by the move. A few feet away sat Pat Simpson, a Torrance resident for over 60 years, with her head in her hands. "Why do they want to tear this place apart?" Simpson, 72, asked. It’s been two years since I broke the story that Harvard University identified Sen. Elizabeth Warren as a minority — citing her alleged Native American roots — but we’re still in the dark. We’ve had two years of Warren’s simplistic answers that aren’t really answers. Two years of Warren insisting she’s proud of her heritage while dismissing questions about it. And two years of her refusal to open up records that could prove whether she used that heritage claim in Ivy League applications. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus used yesterday’s anniversary to call on Warren — whose book tour has heightened

Alas, her diatribe about the recent anti-affirmative action ruling by the court confirmed the fact that her indoctrination at Princeton and Yale as a liberal whiner was successful.

Black students at schools in Wichita and surrounding districts are disciplined at higher rates than their white peers, a trend that mirrors racial disparities throughout the country, according to the most comprehensive survey of school civil rights data in nearly 15 years. The findings, part of an expansive survey of America’s public schools by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, shows that black students are more likely than whites to be suspended or expelled at middle and high schools in Wichita and most area districts. Education officials say it’s difficult to pinpoint reasons for the disparities. But
