State Republicans praise
Common Core replacement

INDIANAPOLIS — State Republican leaders are praising newly approved education standards to replace the Common Core benchmarks in Indiana´s classrooms this fall. The board voted 10-1 Monday morning to endorse the new education standards in a step that makes Indiana the first state to formally abandon the national benchmarks that had been adopted by 45 states. Some conservatives and Tea Party members say the Common Core cedes too much power to the federal government. Indiana state Senate President Pro Tem David Long says the adoption of these standards prevents that.

My next door neighbor teaches in Indiana (right across the river). She says they have renamed Common Core so the stigma is somewhat reduced but it is still the same. This woman is not a conservative by any means, but she says Common Core is worse than New Math!

Watch out for Mike Pence...he may not be the conservative he pretends to be. A few years ago, he had a convoluted immigration plan that was really amnesty in disguise. Just watch him.

Most religious movies feel as if they’re made by a church committee, but every now and then a wild-eyed prophet wanders in and rattles the theater with brimstone. Regardless of your feelings about either movie, Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” qualifies and so does Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Now director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “The Wrestler”) has ascended to the mountaintop and returned with the strangest, most visionary cinematic parable yet. “Noah” is equal parts ridiculous and magnificent, a showman’s folly and a madman’s epic. It elaborates on the Book of Genesis’s slender story of Noah

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) For Republicans hoping to avoid the kind of drama that might derail what looks to be a very good midterm election year, this kind of call is both a nuisance and a trend. It’s true what they say about Michelle Obama. She has amazing arms. The “ugly American” has gotten a lot uglier over the past few weeks, from the streets of California to the halls of Congress and state houses around the country. A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better.
