Fire on high: An annular solar eclipse
that only penguins might love

Washington Post, by Blaine Friedlander

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/28/2014 4:52:11 PM

The quest for fire meets the march of the penguins. In a kind of cosmic oddity, the annular solar eclipse late tonight – or more precisely tomorrow morning, Eastern time – can be seen by human eyes only in the remote reaches of Antarctica. For this annular eclipse, noted likely by its short-lived “ring of fire,” may have but an audience of penguins, since humanity lacks representation. This is the first solar eclipse of 2014. Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between Earth and the sun. Total eclipses, which produce the “diamond ring” effect, happen when the moon is closer to Earth and precisely covers the sun.

In an ABC News interview, anchor Diane Sawyer asked potential 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton about the $100 million plus she and former President Bill Clinton have made over the years. The former-Secretary of State claimed that when she and the President left the White House in January of 2001 that they were "dead broke." "Dead broke," according to Mrs. Clinton means that they were "not only dead broke, but in debt. We had no money when we got there[.]" According to reports on their tax returns, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton earned a combined income of $358,000 in 2000. That jumped to $16 million 2001, the year they left the

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Monday that children waiting with their parents for immigration visas must go to the back of the line once they reach the age of 21. The court was divided 5-4 in deciding that only in limited circumstances does federal immigration law allow for children to retain their place in line after they become adults. The case concerns a program that allows people who are U.S. citizens or legal residents to sponsor relatives who live overseas. (Snip) The court endorsed the federal government's interpretation of the law, which was that only children of permanent U.S. residents were eligible to keep their place in line once

Jay Leno spoke at an awards ceremony in Israel recently honoring Michael Bloomberg. He commented on how Obama‘s administration has handled its ´special relationship´ with Israel. Leno said, “President Obama declared the month of May to be Jewish American Heritage Month. He is calling it an opportunity to renew our ‘unbreakable bond with the nation of Israel.’ And Obama knows it’s unbreakable because he’s been trying to break it for the last five years.”

Rome - A notorious Camorra mafia boss has told a court he cannot remember how many people he has killed since his first murder 30 years ago. Antonio Iovine, former head of the Camorra, was a fugitive for 14 years before being captured in a hideout in the town of Casal di Principe, outside Naples in 2010. He recently decided to collaborate with police as an informer or “pentito” and sent shockwaves through Italy’s political establishment with claims of widespread collusion between the mafia and politicians irrespective of their party affiliation. Previously jailed in 2010 on charges of murder, extortion and criminal association,

Washington - Secretary of state John Kerry has indicated that five Guantánamo Bay detainees released in exchange for an American soldier could be killed by drone strike if they return to the battlefield in Afghanistan. Kerry’s implied threat to the five Taliban fighters came as Republicans ramped-up their criticism of the deal to release Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a prisoner of the Taliban for five years until he was freed last week. (Snip) However, Kerry told CNN the men were also being closed monitored by the US, which had "the ability to do things" if the terms of the arrangement with Qatar were violated. The retired field marshal became Egypt´s second elected president since a popular uprising overthrew longtime strongman Hosni Mubarak in 2011, unleashing more than three years of unrest. Western countries alarmed by the brutal crackdown on dissent following Sisi´s July 3 ousting of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi mostly sent low-level representatives to his inauguration. Secretary of State John Kerry defended Sunday the swap of five Guantanamo detainees for American Bowe Bergdahl, amid reports the captive US soldier was kept at times in a metal cage and in total darkness. On Thursday, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) stated that he was "not, at this point, calling for impeachment." He continued, "The president has two years left in his term. We hope they pass quickly." That hope is empty. They will pass slowly. And even should Republicans win back the Senate in 2014, President Obama promises heavy executive action--action that will surely violate the Constitutional delegation of powers. Which is why, says Breitbart senior editor-at-large Ben Shapiro, impeachment isn't the answer: prosecution is. Hillary Clinton, who recently raked in $5 million dollars in speaking fees in 15 months, recounted to Diane Sawyer the sad tale of her former destitution, telling her, “We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt.” According to Clinton, she and her husband, who has made over $100 million since leaving the White House, “struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea’s education, you know, it was not easy.” But, as Clinton’s story goes, the two hard-working, middle-class millionaires somehow managed to put food on the table in

The platoon was, an American military official would assert years later, “raggedy.”On their tiny, remote base, in a restive sector of eastern Afghanistan at an increasingly violent time of the war, they were known to wear bandannas and cutoff T-shirts. Their crude observation post was inadequately secured, a military review later found. Their first platoon leader, and then their first platoon sergeant, were replaced relatively early in the deployment because of problems. But the unit — Second Platoon, Blackfoot Company in the First Battalion, 501st Regiment — might well have remained indistinguishable from scores of other Army platoons

Forget about Barack Obama’s ultra-liberal policies — should Americans now be worried about the mental health of the current occupant of the White House? That was the alarming suggestion Fox Business Network viewers heard Tuesday evening. Talking about the bewildering decision to trade five “high risk” Taliban leaders for Army Sgt. Portland State University-based Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) had six men - three black and three white - of similar age and build and dressed in identical ´neutral´ outfits cross the same street in Portland at separate intervals. The street had a crosswalk that was not governed by traffic lights, leaving the onus to stop with the driver, according to The Huffington Post. The high drama at the 146th Belmont Stakes began with California Chrome finishing in a dead heat for fourth and ended with a shocking rant by outspoken co-owner Steve Coburn. The cowboy hat-wearing Coburn took aim at the winner Tonalist for cherry-picking races — sitting out the first two legs of the Triple Crown before competing at the Belmont. “That’s the coward’s way out,” he fumed. “It’s not fair to these horses that have been in the game since

The official said it was difficult to verify the accounts Bergdahl has given since his release a week ago. Bergdahl, now 28, was captured in June 2009 after he disappeared from his

Ted Cruz has not made himself a popular man in Washington, D.C. The Texas Republican would argue that’s the point. But even for a Senator—an elected office with the backing of an entire state—ticking off powerful people can have consequences.
