WASHINGTON – More than a dozen federal appeals court judges have violated federal conflict-of-interest laws over the past three years, throwing into doubt decisions in 26 cases, according to an analysis from a watchdog group. The Center for Public Integrity, in a report being released Monday, found 24 cases in which judges ruled despite owning stock in a company appearing before them. In two other cases, the judges had financial ties to law firms representing one of the parties. When informed of the conflicts, all 16 judges sent letters to the parties involved in the cases, disclosing the violations. Several judges said

A rash of severe thunderstorms — accompanied by deadly tornadoes and hail — was raking America’s midsection Sunday, claiming lives in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe confirmed on Twitter Sunday that there were 11 fatalities in his state. Earlier in the day, one person was killed by a twister that hit the small Oklahoma town of Quapaw, the Ottawa County Sheriff´s Department said. Tornadoes were also reported in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri, and golf-ball sized hail rained down in some areas. The tornado that hit Quapaw, which has about 900 residents, devastated the north side of town, The Weather Channel reported.

Forget the acceptance speech. If you want an example of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s imposing political IQ, watch the nine-minute impromptu speech he delivered in Sea Bright a few days before the election. The impeccable populist instincts that make Christie such a formidable politician were all in play — authenticity, empathy, combativeness. It´s the latter that is the most widely discussed aspect of Christie´s political persona. It involves the gruff New York-area politico with the disposition of a Teamster. This is a guy who will look you in the eyes when he calls you on your BS. It´s the

BUNKERVILLE, Nevada -- At the Bundy camp last week, pundits and politicians descended on Bunkerville, Nevada, to throw in their American flag hats with the BLM protestors. A FOX news van had been parked by the side of the road for days. Up on the ridge, militia snipers kept a trained watch as Bundy held court, and disciples from far and wide came to share their personal theories as to why the government was enforcing a court order. But on Thursday, we witnessed a mainstream exodus from Bundy’s flank. Sean Hannity, Bundy’s biggest booster, called his racist remarks “beyond despicable,” but

What is this referendum about? On Sept. 18, Scots will be asked to say yes or no to a simple question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?" If a majority back independence, Scotland would exit its centuries-old political union with England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, taking with it nearly 10 percent of the United Kingdom´s population and one third of its landmass. The pro-independence campaign, led by the left-leaning Scottish National Party, says the referendum offers a "once in a generation" opportunity for Scots to break free from the British Parliament, which the SNP contends is indifferent to Scotland. When our first son was born in 1991 we were told to lay him on his tummy at naptime — never, ever on his back because it would increase his risk of choking and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). By the time our second child came along in 1994 the experts had decided that parents should never, ever let their children sleep on their stomachs because it increased the risk of choking and SIDS. A month after he was born the experts told us that we needed to buy a wedge that forced our son to sleep on his side.

Illinois Dems back off $100 million push

Illinois Democrats are backing off a plan to give $100 million of state money toward landing President Obama’s presidential library and museum -- following accusations of voting “shenanigans” and nasty Chicago-style politics, not to mention the state’s dire financial situation. A Democrat-led House committee approved the money last week at an out-of-town hearing in Chicago with no Republicans in attendance. They instead relied on a procedural move that allowed them to use votes from a previous meeting. “What they did last week was under-handed and sneaky and offers further proof that they no longer can be trusted with taxpayer money,” said House

Paris, France -- In 1883, what was to become the iconic Orient Express train pulled out of Paris´ Gare de l´Est on its maiden voyage to Istanbul, or Constantinople as it was known at the time. It was the creation of an entrepreneurial Belgian, George Nagelmackers, who had already founded the Paris-based parent company, the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. Now, the SNCF French national rail company is planning on bringing the Orient Express back to life and before doing so has teamed up with the Arab World Institute to bring to the public a long lost era when time had another

VATICAN CITY -- Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the Vatican on Sunday for a historic day of four popes, with Francis and Benedict XVI honoring their predecessors John XXIII and John Paul II and declaring them saints in the first ever canonization of two pontiffs. While the ceremony itself was remarkable, it was Benedict´s presence that added to its historic nature: Never before has a reigning and retired pope celebrated Mass together in public, much less an event honoring two of their most famous predecessors. Benedict´s presence was also a reflection of the balancing act that Francis envisioned

The adorable little girl who presented First Lady Michelle Obama with her long-term-jobless father’s résumé Thursday may have been carrying on a family tradition of turning political access into opportunity, according to public records. The girl’s dad appears to be a down-on-his-luck lobbyist and Democratic Party factotum. The first lady was graciousness itself when 10-year-old Charlotte Bell approached her during a Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day event for White House staffers and announced, “My dad’s been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his résumé.” Obama hugged the girl, cooing, “Oh my goodness.”

Another ridiculous politically-correct brouhaha has broken out at Dartmouth College, America’s most hopelessly and disturbingly fragile Ivy League school. This time, the fracas is over a fundraiser for cardiac care that the Phi Delta Alpha fraternity and the Alpha Phi sorority had planned to jointly sponsor, reports Campus Reform. Problems arose because a single student, junior Daniela Hernandez, was offended by the party’s theme of “Phiesta.” As a result, the soiree, which was scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled by the presidents of the respective Greek organizations. Had the party happened, it would have included a live band as well as virgin piña coladas

Forget the current polling as between Hillary and Elizabeth Warren. It pits Hillary against someone who “isn’t running.” For all my criticisms of Warren, and they are extensive, I am convinced that if she ran, she would crush Hillary, just as Obama did. Warren, as did Obama, has a unique ability to demagogue the core Democratic narrative of victimhood in ways that would make Hillary blush. She is more cunning than Hillary, more popular with the base, would bring an excitement the contrived Ready-for-Hillary movement could only dream of. Democrats may be “ready” for Hillary, but they don’t really want

With multiple crises spiraling out of control around the world, stories about the Obama presidency are taking on the air of postmortems. What went wrong, who’s to blame, what next — even The New York Times is starting to recognize that Dear Leader is a global flop. “Obama Suffers Setbacks in Japan and the Mideast,” the paper declared on Friday’s front page. The double whammy of failure pushed the growing Russian menace in Europe to inside pages, but even they were chock-full of reports about utopia gone wrong. One story detailed how the White House was facing the “consequences of underestimating” North

When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk.” He was responding to a question about Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who allegedly told his girlfriend in an

A pair of student groups at North Carolina´s Duke University has launched a poster campaign to impress upon students that using some slang words is not acceptable on campus. With their "You Don´t Say" campaign, the student organizations Think Before You Talk and the LGBTQ organization Blue Devils United are trying to stop students from using slang such as "that´s retarded," or "that´s gay" to describe something that isn´t cool. The campaign is also warning students not to casually use the word "raped" to explain how something may have been hard to do--such as "I was really raped by that

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Hillary Rodham Clinton´s faith in God was shaped by her grandmother´s hymns and the bedtime prayers from her gruff Navy father, the former secretary of state told thousands of Methodist women Saturday. Clinton said she struggled as a young woman between her father´s insistence on self-reliance and her mother´s concern for compassion. She reconciled those in the Biblical story of Jesus instructing his disciples to feed 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. As new U.S. sanctions against Russia loom, the Kremlin has shut down—at least for now—intensive high level communications between top U.S. and Russian officials. Since the invasion of Crimea, President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama have had regular phone calls in an often half-hearted attempt to deescalate the ongoing crisis inside Ukraine. But as the U.S. and EU prepare to unveil new sanctions against Russia, Putin has decided the interactions should stop. The Kremlin has ended high-level contact with the Obama administration, according to diplomatic officials and sources close to the Russian leadership. The move signals an end to the

The relationship (or lack thereof) between the mainstream of the Republican party and the tea party has long been pooh-poohed by GOP strategists as standard operating procedure for a party out of the White House. The base and the establishment feud and, in the end, the base falls in line, they argue. But what if the tea party movement represents something new -- and less manageable -- for the establishment heading into the 2016 presidential race?

A former NASA scientist has described global warming as "nonsense", dismissing the theory of man-made climate change as "an unsubstantiated hypothesis" and saying that it is "absolutely stupid" to blame the recent UK floods on human activity. Professor Les Woodcock, who has had a long and distinguished academic career, also said there is "no reproducible evidence" that carbon dioxide levels have increased over the past century, and blamed the green movement for inflicting economic damage on ordinary people. Three weeks ago, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) responded with a simple message to the news that Affordable Care Act enrollment had exceeded expectations: “House Republicans will continue to work to repeal this law.” Three weeks later, it appears even Boehner doesn’t believe Boehner’s bluster. Speaker John A. Boehner said Thursday that changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act make it impossible to just repeal the health care law unless Congress has a replacement ready as well. Speaking at a Rotary Club meeting in his Ohio district … Boehner said simply repealing the Affordable Care Act “isn’t the

He described himself as “libertarian-ish,” in that despite his very clear libertarian political leanings, he’s generally supported fellow Republicans and hasn’t really backed Libertarian party candidates (save for his father during his 1988 presidential run). Paul, according to CNN, also talked about making the Republican party “bigger” and much more inclusive, saying that unless Republicans “broaden their message” to reach more people, winning future elections is going to be a

We all knew it was only a matter of time before Democrats/liberals played one or more of their Big Three Cards to silence, intimidate, and crush opposition to their latest power-grab/tyrannical attack on our freedom. With a majority of Americans taking rancher Cliven Bundy´s side against Obama´s BLM thugs, Democrat Harry Reid concluded that it was time to play the old tried-and-true race card.
