A Walmart Fortune,
Spreading Charter Schools

New York Times, by Motoko Rich

Original Article

WASHINGTON — DC Prep operates four charter schools here with 1,200 students in preschool through eighth grade. The schools, whose students are mostly poor and black, are among the highest performing in Washington. Last year, DC Prep’s flagship middle school earned the best test scores among local charter schools, far outperforming the average of the city’s traditional neighborhood schools as well. Another, less trumpeted, distinction for DC Prep is the extent to which it — as well as many other charter schools in the city — relies on the Walton Family Foundation, a philanthropic group governed by the family that founded

It´s fun to watch leftists squirm as they wrestle with two competing goals: helping kids and supporting unions. You can´t have both.

Oh, no. Those horrid capitalists, the Waltons, are doing good. What happened to their "stated" goals of devastating the poor and making slaves of their workers? Do you suppose all that wasn´t true?

No, no, no! We can´t have black kids from charter schools outperforming black kids in government schools. That simply won´t do. It would show that setting higher standards works no matter what color the skin is. It will show no racism, no need for government pre-school programs where little kids are taught how to use condoms and perform sexual perversions.

Can´t have that.

The courts forced schools to accept all children irregardless of their ability to learn or interest in learning. Now we have schools that are a mess and the proposed solution is to remove to other settings the children the schools educated well in the past. I expect we will end up with public schools that look like a combination of prisons and hospitals and charters and magnets that look like schools. The real question is whether the citizenry will continue to tax themselves for the hospital/prisons and whether the courts will restrain themselves from interference.

Here´s what I learned from my time teaching in charter schools:

They really don´t do much differently than public schools except attract families who do not follow the cultural idea that being educated is for "whitey."

It is time to stop blaming the schools for the education gap and put the blame on a culture that dismisses the value of being educated.

Kudos to the NYT for publishing this, and to you, OP, for bringing it to us. Certainly not your ´typical´ NYT fare. It is delicious to contemplate several more unions (NEA, AFT) with good reason to hate the Waltons and their WalMart cash cow/business model.

And the Waltons are funding the creativity and brainpower of Michelle Rhee, an invaluable resource that DC squandered. This, too, pleases me.

The Middle East, always complex, is descending into a form of chaos that seems baffling. Bringing order to the complexity is Daniel P. Goldman, aka Spengler, writing in Tablet Magazine. A former Wall Street numbers guy, Goldman brings together a lot of demographic data expressed in useful charts, to lay out his case that time is on Israel’s side, and that the Muslims of the Middle East are engaged in a long-term battle, which he likens to the 30 Years War that devastated Europe in the 17th century: The region has seen nothing like it since the Mongol invasion of

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

Ever since President George W. Bush said “Islam is peace” on Sept. 17, 2001, it has been politically shielded from any debate about its effects on its adherents or on the rest of the world. Muslim nations and pressure groups such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations have used political correctness as a weapon to punish anyone who dared to begin any debate on Islam by calling them “Islamophobes,” an accusation of racism. That era was ended by the lead editorial in the July 5 edition of The Economist, the prominent liberal British news magazine. Titled “The Tragedy of the Arabs,”

Half a dozen things went through my mind. Maybe he’s trying some sort of Cloward-Piven maneuver: an attempt to overwhelm our welfare state to the point where we replace it with “a guaranteed annual income and thus an end to poverty.” Or maybe he’s just trying to flood the population with Democrat voters. Back in the heyday of the British Empire, a man from one of the colonies addressed a London audience. "Please do not do any more good in my country," he said. "We have suffered too much already from all the good that you have done." That is essentially the message of an outstanding new book by Jason Riley about blacks in America. Its title is "Please Stop Helping Us." Its theme is that many policies designed to help blacks are in fact harmful, sometimes devastatingly so. These counterproductive policies range from minimum wage laws to "affirmative action" quotas. This book untangles the controversies,

Where is the red line of impeachment? In theory, a red line might be located somewhere on a list of impeachable offenses – perhaps at the point where a certain number of transgressions is exceeded, or next to a specific instance because of its significance or impact. In reality, though, that red line exists along a spectrum of “political will.” As Andrew McCarthy explained: “You can have a thousand provable impeachable offenses, but before Congress may remove the president from power, there must be strong popular support – a public will that cuts across partisan and ideological lines.”
