St. Peter´s Overflows For
Historic Day of 4 Popes

VATICAN CITY -- Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the Vatican on Sunday for a historic day of four popes, with Francis and Benedict XVI honoring their predecessors John XXIII and John Paul II and declaring them saints in the first ever canonization of two pontiffs. While the ceremony itself was remarkable, it was Benedict´s presence that added to its historic nature: Never before has a reigning and retired pope celebrated Mass together in public, much less an event honoring two of their most famous predecessors. Benedict´s presence was also a reflection of the balancing act that Francis envisioned

Hooray for the Catholics. I´m off to a church where sainthood is determined by God and the only criterion is if one believes in Jesus Christ as his/her Savior. Christ is my leader, not a human being elected by others and assuming the official title of "Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the Vatican City State, Servant of the servants of God." I say this not to condemn Catholics but to point out that there are real, major differences between Catholics and Protestants, and that all Protestants do not consider this a "magnificent spectacle" as suggested.

I believe JP-II is being canonized quickly (santo subito) not only because he was a holy man but because, like Ronaldus Maximus and Saint Maggie, he brought freedom from communism to the world.

He is truly a saint for the ages not just for Catholics but for all mankind!

BTW - a ´saint´ means clean in both Greek and Hebrew. It does not mean extra-special super-duper wowie-zowie Christian because any Christian has been made clean by accepting salvation from Christ.

This ´Saint´ business is the antithesis of the Gospels.

Its nice the see the papacy take a more visible role in the world. With all the wickedness in the world, the papacy is needed more than ever in a leadership role.

Hundreds of thousands together in one place, and no violence. This is in startling contrast to some other religions.

God calls us together to love thy neighbor where other religions say to hate thy neighbor, and enslave thy neighbor, and kill thy neighbor.

God does not call upon people to kill thy neighbor, but the devil would. Some religions need to seriously examine their beliefs.

The live coverage on EWTN started at 1 am here on the west coast, and we were able to watch the canonization ceremony before retiring so we could attend 9 am Mass. We’re looking forward to seeing the EWTN replay this afternoon, and hearing first hand Pope Francis’ homily. Pope Emeritus Benedict looked frailer than I expected.

Raymond Arroro reminded us that St. John Paul The Great passed from this world on the eve of Divine Mercy in 2005. How appropriate today was chosen for his canonization, for it was he, as Archbishop of Krakow, who conducted the investigation into St. Faustina’s apparitions and messages from Jesus in 1930’s Poland and concluded they were worthy of belief. As Pontiff he beatified and canonized St. Faustina and greatly encouraged the faithful of the Church to adopt the Chaplet of Divine Mercy prayers, and designated the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. A great gift to the Universal Church. The story of St. Faustina is truly inspiring.

Our separated brothers and sisters in Christ labor under many misconceptions. G.K. Chesterton once said, “Its not so much that people disagree with the teachings of the Catholic Church as they disagree with what they think the Church teaches.” Every faithful Christian who attains heaven and the presence of God is a saint. However, in every generation there are obvious holy men and women who truly imitate Christ in their earthly lives. It is these men and women that the Catholic Church recognizes for their holiness and elevates them to formal sainthood as worthy examples for emulation and veneration by the faithful, for it is the central mission of every Christian to become a saint. May many blessings flow from St. John Paul The Great and St. John XXIII.

I thought that this site was a salon? "A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation." People are so thin-skinned.

I am a baptized Roman Catholic and I took no offense in #5´s remarks - as well as his way of expressing it. He is entitled to his opinion and religion has been such a forbidden topic, my parents never taught me anything about other religions.

I am getting increasingly tired of so many things being considered "untouchable". That´s a democrat mind-set. Never talk about race, religion, homosexuality, illegal aliens,, etc... UNLESS you do it the "right way" (with the "right way" only being defined by the elites of that topic).

Revealed to saints (the church): “… the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” (Colossians 1:26-28)

[Should precede #29.]

#5 attempted to make clear the text was not
intended to condemn Catholics, simply a reminder there are differences between Catholics and Protestants. The “saints” of the New Testament are “… the community of believers God calls and sets apart by faith … Christians are made holy and complete through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Six of St. Paul’s letters address believers as “saints.” For example: “To all those in Rome who are loved by God AND CALLED TO BE SAINTS: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 1:7)

I confine myself to discussing the snarking about the cost of this ceremony. When the woman anointed Our Lord with expensive perfume it was Judas the traitor who said this could have been sold and the money used to help the poor. The gospel remarks that he held the purse and so he could dip into it and Our Lord tells him the poor you will have always with you. This is the passage which marxists most of all try to strip out of the scripture. I regard Judas as the first marxist. He knew the price of the perfume but not it´s value. It´s value like anything else was to give honour to God. Notice that marxists ( think Obama ) spend money lavishly on themselves but when money is spent to honour or worship God they will want to use that money to help the poor. The poor are always there and poverty is never eliminated by all the collectivist, marxist programs. I will take the marxists seriously when Obama and Michelle, who tells us splurging is the spice of life, cut their lavish spending to the bone and use the money to help the poor. Obama´s half brother in the hut in Kenya living on $20 per year has not received a dime from Obama who is the biggest spender the the history of the world. I think the poor will get more good from this money when the Church sticks to it´s policy of drawing attention to virtue but not to vice. Notice the Church never solemnly declares that someone is in hell even in the most extreme cases.

great post, #32 and others.

I grew up in the Church of Christ, fundamentalist non-denominational church, that not only put down the Catholics but also all the other Protestant "denominations" (dirty word apparently). So, I can relate to #5´s sincere opinion, I used to think the same.

A few years ago, I made a snarky remark about Pope Benedict on a friend´s facebook post. Wow! My conscience convicted me in an immediate and powerful way...I began learning...also my yearning for the Eucharist, plus the historical, intellectual, mystical, rational, logical, beautiful riches of the original Church, the keys of which were handed first to Peter then handed down along the line to the present day pope, drew me home.

So, watch out #7, you may be on the verge of a conversion....(just kidding!....kind of)...you and others make some good points, of course all believing Christians are saints, Scripture tells us so...that being said, there´s a lot of misconceptions about the Church. You would be surprised to find that out, I sure was!

Kind of makes you want to forget The Church created and is carefully supervising its massive illegal invasion against the U S of A! Further, that The Church is offering and delivering Sanctity (political and Church protection) to all Catholic alien invaders).

After all, it WAS the now Pope who had propagandized to them all, "There are no borders".

Look, this is not a question of whose religion is right and whose is wrong. We all have our beliefs and more power to us all. The lack of tolerance for others´ beliefs is the issue. Let´s not become the source of non-civility in this world. All religious beliefs are welcome here, right? Good for the Catholics on a historic day for them.

The U.S. deported Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America. Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem. Monday´s flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged

The Obama administration quietly announced on Tuesday that it intends to change the way Americans learn about natural disasters and other major emergencies during radio and TV broadcasts, giving the president the ability to flip a switch and address the entire nation at once. The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. [Snip] It can take up to 10 minutes for every radio, TV, cable and satellite provider to

In his message to the “Mexico/Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development,” Pope Francis characterized the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants that have crossed the U.S. southern border as a product of globalization, suggesting that the phenomenon is happening worldwide. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security. Contrary to what those who defend the right to own high-powered assault rifles believe, not all guns are created equal. Due to a combination of availability, portability and criminal usage the following five types of guns are the country's most dangerous. School Shootings: Widely Reported Tragedies Since 2000 - Using firearm trace data from the ATF, as well as FBI homicide records, we determined the types of guns most often recovered from crime scenes and/or used in murders. John McCain, an immigration hawk. Who knew? Mr. McCain, the highest-profile Republican of the U.S. Senate’s “Gang of Eight” that came up with amnesty as the solution to the immigration crisis — and it truly is a crisis — is finally taking a hard line against President Obama for his encouraging the tidal wave of illegal aliens swamping the southwestern border. “There has to be a halt to this,” Mr. McCain thundered Sunday on CNN. “That’s what we want, and the best way to do that is for planeloads of these young people to be returning to their country of origin

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Obama in his own different way is heading towards Nixon-like levels of weirdness, as, beaten down by the failures regarding his ventures, he appears to have quit his own job. A.B. Stoddard of the Hill says in effect he has stopped being president and chooses to live in a world of his own, shutting out the problems that have become overwhelming, giving dinners where he talks

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has warned all of his colleagues in Congress that President Barack Obama’s new immigration strategy—his plans to legalize millions of illegal alien adults through executive power—could destroy America as we know it. “I write to inform you of a development that threatens the foundation of our constitutional Republic,” Sessions, Congress’s top immigration hawk, wrote in a letter that was hand-delivered to all 535 members of Congress on Monday and provided exclusively to Breitbart News. Sessions cites a recent report from the National Journal, in which reporter Major Garrett detailed how, despite the ongoing

Attorney General Eric Holder encouraged Americans not to forget race while working for justice and equality in their country. “As it stands, our society is not yet color blind -- nor should it be -- given the disparities that still afflict and divide us.” Holder explained, “We must be color brave, and we must never forget that all are made better and more prosperous if all are given equal opportunities.” Holder made his remarks during a speech at Howard University on Tuesday for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil Rights Act. “We must take into account not only the

WASHINGTON — It was an enduring image of his presidency: a chastened Bill Clinton walking his dog while wife Hillary keeps her distance as the family leaves town at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal — but it was all part of a contrived public-repentance campaign, according to a new book. With Bill on the skids and his wife’s future prospects on the line, it was necessary for the pubic to see the president being punished, said Weekly Standard online editor Daniel Halper in his new book, “Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine.” “They understood that
