Debasing diplomacy

The Washington Post reports that “international negotiators rushed to eastern Ukraine on Saturday to seek the release of European military monitors who were captured Friday and promptly branded “spies” by the pro-Russia militia that seized them.” One set of representatives being rescued by another. We can only hope the negotiators don’t join the monitors in the calaboose. The dominating sound of the last few days has been one of phone jacks being unplugged. It gotten harder and harder for the administration to find someone to talk to. (Snip) What distinguishes Obama is that he does these things outside the Constitutional framework of war, by executive action, through secret orders justified by secret findings, undisclosed pacts and “flexibility”. Obama’s problem is not so much “will you act?” as “who’s side are you on?” What got Obama into trouble in Syria in the first place was promising to use force (is there anyone who has drawn more Red Lines?) and not meaning it; vowing there would be “consequences” in Ukraine and not being truthful; declaring

There is a conceit inherent in being professionally modest; in feigning a departure from the stage only to insist on pulling the strings from behind the props. Thus there is a certain underhandedness about leading from behind. (Snip) The administration appears to believe there is some kind of natural international legal order which will enforce itself. Hillary Clinton, asked to comment on Russia’s dismemberment of the Ukraine ventured that Moscow would be punished by a kind of Karma. “I think the outcome for him and Russia will not be good, which is deeply unfortunate,” she said. “Russia should be a

Tampa,FL -- Last August off the coast of Cape Cod, researchers from Ocearch, a non-profit organization that conducts research on great white sharks and other large shark species tagged a great white shark with a transponder. The transponder sends pings to a satellite providing data that shows where the shark travels. Researchers have named the 13 foot, 1400 pound shark "Betsy." Betsy has traveled well over 2500 miles since being tagged and is now swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, at last check, she´s about 80 miles west of Sanibel Island in Lee County. The general thrust of left-wing pundit Richard Cohen’s syndicated column of April 17, 2014 is an attack on Rand Paul’s (and other prospective GOP presidential candidates’) lack of experience. Given Barack Obama’s thin résumé before becoming president – which, to his credit, Cohen acknowledges -- assailing Rand Paul’s (or Ted Cruz’s, or anyone else’s) meager public record is ludicrous. Bad as Cohen’s attack on Paul (and others) is, his sly effort to rewrite the history of the Republican Party’s (and by implication, the Democrat Party’s) role in the struggle for blacks’ civil rights is even worse. Unhappily, however, Cohen’s historical

Another catastrophe has overtaken John Kerry. It’s almost routine now. The Middle East peace process that was going to fix everything has finally gone belly up. John Kerry’s tireless overtures have somehow resulted in the Palestinian authority joining Hamas. You wonder how he did that. That alliance with the terror organization deep-sixed any hopes for a deal with Israel. (Snip) Good news is pretty thin at Foggy Bottom. This latest setback comes after a State Department spokesperson failed to name a single accomplishment of the agency under Secretary Hillary Clinton. A few years ago, Brandon Green was sitting on the couch, brooding over a small mistake he´d made at work and the likely consequences. His roommate walked in and began telling him about something funny that happened to him that day. Mr. Green didn´t chuckle or even smile. He scowled and said nothing. That´s when his roommate offered Mr. Green some valuable analysis: "Never mind," he said. "You´re just not a happy person." "Something happened to me in that moment," says Mr. Green, a 29-year-old Web analyst from Los Angeles. "I realized I could continue blaming the world, as I

A Washington Post report that the US has decided to deploy ground forces to Poland, ostensibly to act as a tripwire to deter further Russian threats, raises some interesting issues. (Snip) The net effect will be to force Obama to do either do what Poland hopes — pivot to Europe — or clearly abandon it. Pivoting to Europe must leave the Pacific exposed. To cover all bases Obama will have to postpone his plan to fundamentally transform America into a welfare-type state and use that money to rebuild the military. Poland may be trying to hustle Obama into being decisive,

The BBC reports that pro-Russian separatists are already violating the Four Party Geneva agreement before the ink is dry on the paper. (Snip) An administration which came to office promising to use diplomacy to solve every international crisis has come very close to destroying its chosen instrument. They are within an ace of wrecking the credibility in agreements themselves. His deal with Putin, like his forgotten “deal” with Assad and his hoped for “deal” with Iran are worth less than Mickey Mouse money. Ironically the demolition of diplomacy began when Obama declared his intention to rely upon it to the

An avalanche has left 12 dead and four missing in the worst-ever recorded disaster on Mount Everest. With peak season just days away on the deadly mountain, Sherpas and guides are busy preparing for the trek up the highest peak in the world. "The Sherpa guides were carrying up equipment and other necessities for climbers when the disaster happened," a spokesman for Nepal´s Tourism Ministry, Mohan Krishna Sapkota, told the AFP news agency. Before a climber begins the ascent, hired Sherpas set up camps at higher altitudes and fix routes and ropes on the slopes above. The Sherpa guides had

A surprise deal has been reached at the Four Party talks in Geneva, which the president touted as his diplomatic option. (Snip) This doesn’t sound very victorious. But the president’s style is to bluff his way to victory. Recently he claimed that the Obamacare debate was over even though he’s ordered the census bureau to revise its metrics so nothing can be measured. He’s even reserved the right to make changes to the program, claiming the Republicans have no right to input until they change their attitude. Too bad that doesn’t work with Putin. But he’s always winning — or

Forget the current polling as between Hillary and Elizabeth Warren. It pits Hillary against someone who “isn’t running.” For all my criticisms of Warren, and they are extensive, I am convinced that if she ran, she would crush Hillary, just as Obama did. Warren, as did Obama, has a unique ability to demagogue the core Democratic narrative of victimhood in ways that would make Hillary blush. She is more cunning than Hillary, more popular with the base, would bring an excitement the contrived Ready-for-Hillary movement could only dream of. Democrats may be “ready” for Hillary, but they don’t really want

Anyone expecting rancher Cliven Bundy to apologize at a news briefing Thursday for widely condemned remarks — that black people were “happier” during the slavery era than now — would be disappointed. Wearing his signature cowboy hat, Bundy, who led an armed confrontation with federal rangers over a land dispute and was then hailed as a patriot by Fox News’ Sean Hannity and other conservatives, repeated in Bunkerville, Nevada, what he had said earlier — he was “just wondering” if blacks were better off under slavery. As new U.S. sanctions against Russia loom, the Kremlin has shut down—at least for now—intensive high level communications between top U.S. and Russian officials. Since the invasion of Crimea, President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama have had regular phone calls in an often half-hearted attempt to deescalate the ongoing crisis inside Ukraine. But as the U.S. and EU prepare to unveil new sanctions against Russia, Putin has decided the interactions should stop. The Kremlin has ended high-level contact with the Obama administration, according to diplomatic officials and sources close to the Russian leadership. The move signals an end to the

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Hillary Rodham Clinton´s faith in God was shaped by her grandmother´s hymns and the bedtime prayers from her gruff Navy father, the former secretary of state told thousands of Methodist women Saturday. Clinton said she struggled as a young woman between her father´s insistence on self-reliance and her mother´s concern for compassion. She reconciled those in the Biblical story of Jesus instructing his disciples to feed 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. "The disciples come to Jesus and suggest they send away the people to find food to fend for themselves. But Jesus

The relationship (or lack thereof) between the mainstream of the Republican party and the tea party has long been pooh-poohed by GOP strategists as standard operating procedure for a party out of the White House. The base and the establishment feud and, in the end, the base falls in line, they argue. But what if the tea party movement represents something new -- and less manageable -- for the establishment heading into the 2016 presidential race?

President Obama’s landslide victory in 2008 was supposed to herald the beginning of a new Democratic era. And yet, six years later, there is not even a clear Democratic majority in the country, let alone one poised for 30 years of dominance. It’s not because Mr. Obama’s so-called new coalition of young and nonwhite voters failed to live up to its potential. They again turned out in record numbers in 2012. The Democratic majority has failed to materialize because the Republicans made large, countervailing and unappreciated gains of their own among white Southerners. From the high plains of West Texas to the

Pick a card, any card. Racist. Sexist. Homophobic. We all knew it was only a matter of time before Democrats/liberals played one or more of their Big Three Cards to silence, intimidate, and crush opposition to their latest power-grab/tyrannical attack on our freedom. With a majority of Americans taking rancher Cliven Bundy´s side against Obama´s BLM thugs, Democrat Harry Reid concluded that it was time to play the old tried-and-true race card. As Gomer Pyle use to say, “surprise, surprise.” We knew it was coming.

In late 2011, nearing the eve of the formal start of the 2012 presidential election cycle, America’s liberal commentators had already watched a series of Republican presidential debates and formed their opinions of the prospective GOP candidates. Most determined that former Massachusetts governor and eventual nominee, Mitt Romney, was an unsavory conservative, but he was a preferable alternative to his Republican competition. In fact, the left-leaning political press was so much more concerned about Romney’s arch-conservative competitors that they were willing to overlook the former governor’s offenses to liberal

Problems arose because a single student, junior Daniela Hernandez, was offended by the party’s theme of “Phiesta.” As a result, the soiree, which was scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled by the presidents of the respective Greek organizations. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a stern warning to Russia Thursday evening, one week after a tentative agreement to defuse the crisis in Ukraine appeared to have no impact on the violent clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian government. "The window to change course is closing," Kerry told reporters at the State Department. "President [Vladimir] Putin and Russia face a choice." If Russia does not reverse course and take action to urge the separatists to stand down and give up their arms, Kerry said the U.S. and its allies are poised to take actions directed at hurting Russia´s economy.
