This is the moment an RAF Typhoon closes in on a Russian surveillance plane after it flew close to UK airspace, before making it turn back. The photograph of the Russian Tu-95 ´Bear H´ was taken from one of the RAF´s Quick Reaction Aircraft after two Russian planes were spotted off the coast of north-east Scotland. However, the aircraft turned away after the British jet fighters, one which can be seen approaching the Russian plane from above, took off from Leuchars airbase, near St Andrews in Fife yesterday. Planes were launched by the RAF to determine the identity of two unknown aircraft seen

Wouldn´t it be great if the analog would happen with the NSA and other agencies intent on snooping on the people they ostensibly serve?

On his Monday radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh presented his theory as to why then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton didn’t declare Boko Haram a terrorist group back in President Barack Obama’s first term, which he declared to be based on race. “How many people do you think know that this terror group, Boko Haram, has been attacking Christians since 2009?” he said. “The jihad aspect of Boko Haram is almost completely ignored by the White House and the media. And I can tell you why – I just saw why. There’s video that has been released of about half of

Democrats propose Internet voting in 2016,

Democrats are thinking about using Internet balloting in 2016 to expand their voter base and select a president -- prompting Republicans to consider such a strategy to keep from losing ground. Iowa Democrats proposed the idea and several others during a recent Democratic National Committee meeting, saying Internet balloting could expand access to their unique caucus process to overseas military personnel, absentee voters and others. They have already conducted some interviews and are now embarked on a “listening tour” to get input from party activists, caucus experts and others, says Iowa Democratic Party spokeswoman Christina Freundlich. “We’re looking at different options,” she told

WASHINGTON – Mitt Romney on Friday urged the Republican Party to drop its opposition to raising the minimum wage, putting himself back in the middle of a vigorous debate over the direction of the party he led in 2012. “I part company with many of the conservatives in my party on the issue of the minimum wage. I think we ought to raise it,” Romney said Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Because frankly, our party is all about more jobs and better pay. And I think communicating that is important.” “I also believe the key to our party is being able

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Thursday morning said he supports an increase in the minimum wage, breaking with many Republicans who have stood against it. “I, for instance, as you know, part company with many of the conservatives in my party on the issue of the minimum wage. I think we ought to raise it,” the 2012 Republican presidential nominee said. “Because frankly, our party is all about more jobs and better pay.” Romney’s comments come after Senate Republicans rejected a vote on a Senate bill that would have increased the minimum wage to $10.10. Recently, though, former Minnesota Gov. Tim

I’ve been waiting three hours since I saw this tweet for the NYT to publish a transcript or story about what he said, but no dice as I’m writing this. If it happens tonight, I’ll update with a link. The quote’s almost certainly not out of context, though: Remember, Paul told David Axelrod a few weeks ago that he thinks the GOP might be overemphasizing the issue. What’s newsy about this is the tone. Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Friday called for an increase in the federal minimum wage, splitting with party leaders and some top business groups on what´s expected to a major issue in this year´s midterm elections. A good rule of thumb with Hillary Clinton is this: If it comes out of her mouth, it’s insincere. You will never lose money taking that bet 100 times out of 100. And a good corollary to that rule is this: When she tells you what something is supposed to mean, that’s not what it means at all. Especially when she’s talking about the Bible. Pay attention: When a liberal who “rarely mentions his or her faith” suddenly shows up in a church quoting Scripture to you, it’s a pretty good bet that liberal is trying to pervert the Scripture in

On Sunday, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin reminded former Florida Governor Jeb Bush that no matter how much of an "act of love" he thinks illegal immigration is, it is still illegal. The seeds of what blossomed grotesquely in the Rose Garden last weekend — a celebration of the release of five senior Taliban military leaders in exchange for a U.S. sergeant purported to be a deserter — were sown a long time ago: on the second and third days of President Obama’s first term, to be precise. On his second day in office, the president signed an executive order directing that the Guantanamo Bay detention facility be closed. You can watch the cringe-inducing video of the signing ceremony on YouTube, as the president stumbles through a reading of the order to

One of the most striking elements of the Bowe Bergdahl affair is word that top Army officers were so anxious to keep the matter a secret that they directed Bergdahl´s fellow soldiers to sign a pledge of silence about his 2009 decision to walk away from duty in Afghanistan. "Many of Bergdahl´s fellow troops…signed nondisclosure agreements agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl´s disappearance and the efforts to recapture him," wrote CNN´s Jake Tapper, who first reported the agreements last Sunday. Now, with Bergdahl back in U.S. hands, many of those former soldiers are ignoring the agreement they signed. They

Among the most tantalizing mysteries surrounding Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s departure from his U.S. military base in 2009 is this: Was he trying to find the Taliban? Or did he simply wander away and get captured? Politicians and members of the military have criticized the Obama administration’s decision to swap five jailed Taliban leaders for Bergdahl, saying the soldier may have deserted. Until now, few details have emerged about the circumstances of Bergdahl’s disappearance from his base. But The Washington Post has reached Afghan villagers who spotted Bergdahl shortly after he slipped away from his base. To them, it’s clear something was

BRUSSELS— President Barack Obama said Thursday he "absolutely makes no apologies" for seeking the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in a prisoner swap with the Taliban, vigorously defending an exchange that has caused a furor in the United States and has dogged the president on his European trip this week. When it comes to getting soldiers back from war, Obama said, "We don´t condition whether we make the effort to get them back." He also said Bergdahl´s health had been deteriorating and "We were deeply concerned about it. "We saw an opportunity and we seized it. And I make no

U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl at one point during his captivity converted to Islam, fraternized openly with his captors and declared himself a "mujahid," or warrior for Islam, according to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account and obtained by Fox News. The reports indicate that Bergdahl´s relations with his Haqqani captors morphed over time, from periods of hostility, where he was treated very much like a hostage, to periods where, as one source told Fox News, "he became much more of an accepted fellow" than is popularly understood. He even reportedly was allowed to carry a

Late in the afternoon of Saturday, May 31, Barack Obama strode confidently to a lectern in the White House Rose Garden flanked by the parents of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a soldier who had gone missing from his platoon in the mountains of Afghanistan in June 2009. “This morning I called Bob and Jani Bergdahl and told them that after nearly five years in captivity, their son, Bowe, is coming home,” Obama said. Sgt. Bergdahl’s medical condition was described as “stable and improving daily.” The spokesman, Col. Steve Warren, would not elaborate on the psychologists’ work. Obama administration officials have said that Bergdahl’s health was deteriorating rapidly, forcing them to move quickly in making a deal with the Taliban to secure his release after five years in captivity.
