Bulletproof Subways A Sign

CBS 2 (Chicago, IL), by John Dodge

CHICAGO— While out on an unrelated assignment, CBS 2 investigative reporter Dave Savini decided to stop by a South Side Subway sandwich shop for a meal. Savini was struck by the fact that the counter of the store at 116th Street and South Halsted was encased in bullet-proof glass. Such a sight would be common at crime magnets like gas stations or currency exchanges, but a Subway? The store was clean and looked just like any other well-run Subway restaurant, except for the bullet-proof protection for the employees and lack of a bathroom for customers. In fact, a few patrons

Valerie Plame, former CIA officer and “hero” portrayed in the Sean Pean movie Fair Game, was interviewed by ABC News yesterday in New Mexico, where Plame was an honored guest at a Hillary Clinton Super PAC fundraiser. In the interview she made a lot of blah blah blah positive comments, but her list of Hillary’s accomplishments in four years as Secretary of State thoroughly underwhelmed. Here’s the exchange, via Gateway Pundit: ABC: What would you say were Hillary Clinton’s successes at the State Department? Plame: My husband, Joe, would be in a better place to answer that. Former Congressman Allen West wrote an article about the issues surrounding the Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling in which he asks: Has our culture devolved to the point that the private statements of an NBA owner draws more outrage than the lies and deceit of the President of the United States? He has a point. Let’s take a look at just some of the lies President Barack Obama has told during his time in office: Perhaps his most famous one is “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it,” Politifact’s “Lie of the Year” award-winner. (Video) On ABC’s hit series “Scandal,” President Fitzgerald Grant is often seen sneaking out of the White House for a clandestine meeting with the covert agents of B-613 or a secret rendezvous with Olivia Pope, but nothing could be further from the truth. The real president isn’t sneaking anywhere. President Obama explained earlier this week what it’s like to try and break out of the White House bubble. “Every once in a while, I’m able to sneak off… I’m sort of like the circus bear that kind of breaks the chain, and I start taking off, and everybody starts whispering,

Facing the largest boil-water order in the region’s history, Portlanders emptied stores’ supplies of bottled water, chucked potentially contaminated food and braced for a complicated Memorial Day weekend. About 670,000 people in the Portland, Ore., area were told after lunch Friday to boil water used for drinking, cooking and tooth-brushing. Three routine tests this week showed the water system was contaminated by E. coli bacteria, usually associated with animal or human fecal matter. The finding suggested the water supply could include other harmful bacteria, although health officials said the worst condition someone likely would suffer is diarrhea. Within the city, nearly

The Washington Redskins took on Democrats in the U.S. Senate on Friday, telling Majority Leader Harry Reid that his efforts to orchestrate a campaign to force a team name change were misguided and failed to recognize the name’s “deep and personal meaning.” “I hope you will attend one of our home games, where you would witness first-hand that the Washington Redskins are a positive, unifying force for our community in a city and region that is divided on so many levels,” team President Bruce Allen wrote Mr. Reid. The letter offered several rebuttals to arguments that Mr. Reid and other

The Republican National Committee filed a complaint on Friday to force federal election officials to allow the party to raise unlimited money from individuals, opening a new front in its legal battle on campaign regulation. The lawsuit, filed in United States District Court for the District of Columbia by the national committee along with the Republican organization of Louisiana, would open a loophole in the 12-year-old law banning parties from raising unlimited checks from wealthy donors, unions and corporations, known as “soft money.” If successful, the suit would allow party officials to solicit large contributions from their party’s biggest givers to

The Keystone XL pipeline is becoming another potential 2016 headache for Hillary Clinton. Clinton is keeping her silence for now on the proposed oil pipeline, a project that has split her party, posed difficult choices for Democrats on this year’s ballot and created a huge lobbying industry in D.C. But the Obama administration’s repeated delays in deciding on Keystone are increasing the odds that the issue will still be lingering if she runs for president — and some of her potential green supporters are clamoring for her to take a stand now. President Obama is taking a swipe at the Founding Fathers, blaming his inability to move his agenda on the “disadvantage” of having each state represented equally in the Senate. At a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago Thursday night, Mr. Obama told a small group of wealthy supporters that there are several hurdles to keeping Democrats in control of the Senate and recapturing the House. One of those problems, he said, is the apportionment of two Senate seats to each state regardless of population. “Obviously, the nature of the Senate means that California has the same number of Senate seats as Wyoming.

Why do some political scandals stick while others fade? The level of media obsession seems to rise and fall as mysteriously as the stock market. On Benghazi, sell. Hold on the IRS audits. On the Department of Veterans Affairs scandal, buy, buy, buy. In the broader scandal market, fraud or criminality helps. Political intrigue is a plus. Sexual content increases attention but may eventually seem pathetically human and excusable. Conservatives are convinced that the liberal media are harder on Republicans. There is a natural human tendency to attribute good motives to people with whom you agree — and corrupt motives
