America’s hunger crisis, and
why Washington ignores it

MSNBC, by Ned Resnikoff

There’s the 99% and the 1%, and then there’s the 16%. The latter number is the proportion of Americans who don’t have enough food to eat, according to the most recent figures on food insecurity. In absolute numbers, nearly 50 million people in this country—including 16 million children—currently lack sufficient food to live a healthy life. The numbers are striking on their own, but what’s even more striking is how little attention the problem has received in Washington. When the food stamp program received an automatic $5 billion cut, reducing benefit levels across the board, there was little response from

Try to find an electric shopping cart if you have a broken leg. They´re all taken by people who overflow the seat.

We have food stamps and charitable food pantries to ensure that no one in this country goes to bed hungry, and millions of citizens who would respond immediately if they saw a family in need. Either these numbers are made up, or millions of irresponsible people are pawning off their food stamps for drugs, probably both.

Baloney! If they haven´t got food it´s because they´ve traded their food stamps for drugs.

Sorry, but the clincally obese lady with the fancy nails, crowding in front of me at the checkout line, is shouting so loudly into a better phone than I can afford, that I can´t hear your complaint about people going hungry.

There is no reason for anyone in this land to be hungry for the reasons stated by earlier posters. But, I do believe there are hungry children. In that event, it is lazy or ignorant parents who won´t or can´t bother to make sure their children don´t go to school hungry. It does happen. My granddaughter is a 7th grade teacher in a low-income school district. She and many of her co-workers keep packets of snacks in their desks to tide the children until lunch or to send them home with something to eat.

The government is giving millions of kids free lunches, no proof of income required - just fill out a form, or in some cases, no forms required for the whole district. Then those kids are counted as statistics when coming up with these "hungry" kids supposedly flooding the country. I worked in school cafeterias - I saw it every day. The more free lunch kids in the district, the more aid the school gets. Anything to make the numbers of poor and hungry bigger so the politicians can quote how many starving people there are in America! And "homeless" kids? If a child has a perfectly lovely home but it is with someone other than a parent, that child is officially homeless. More free money - more stats about the burgeoning number in poverty.

If the government was really concerned about hunger they wouldn´t fight so hard against limiting EBT cards to meat, dairy, fruits & vegetables. Instead we read about lottery ticket, gasoline, alcohol, tobacco & even tattoo purchases. The authorities are also not concerned about hunger when someone crosses state lines to hit the gaming tables in Las Vegas using these cards. It´s all a scam for many and really deprives those poor who need the help and obey the rules.
