- As promised on Monday, the Justice Department today released its new criteria for inmates who want their prison sentences reduced. Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole announced six "stringent standards" the department will consider when reviewing and expediting clemency applications from federal inmates. He also replaced the Bush administration appointee who heads DOJ´s Pardons office. Under the new initiative, DOJ will prioritize clemency applications from inmates who meet all of the following requirements:-- They are currently serving time in a federal prison and likely would have received a substantially lower sentence if convicted of the same offense(s) today;

WASHINGTON— Celebrations aside, LeBron James´ decision to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA could complicate the Republican Party´s plan to nominate its presidential contender on Lake Erie´s shores in 2016. If James leads his team into post-season play then, the GOP could find its preferred June 28 start date for the convention impossible because of the site conflict. Convention planners typically take weeks to customize the space with lights, seats and the traditional balloon drop from the rafters — impossible tasks if the Cavaliers go into post-season play. That leaves Republicans looking at their backup date of July

The tabloid headline might read something like this: Sexiest Man Alive Becomes Angriest Man Alive. This week, George Clooney condemned The Daily Mail, the British newspaper, after it reported that the Lebanese mother of his fiancée objected to their wedding on religious grounds. Relatives had joked about the death of the bride if she defied her mother’s wishes, the article said. “We have family members all over the world, and the idea that someone would inflame any part of that world for the sole reason of selling papers should be criminal,” Mr. Clooney wrote in a response published in USA

Already under attack by critics who say he’s lost interest in his job, President Obama added fuel to the fire on Thursday with a drowsy appearance in Texas. A heavy-lidded Obama struggled to keep his head up during a one-on-one talk in an Austin cafe with a college student whose parents lost their jobs last year. Kinsey Button, a junior at the University of Texas at Austin, huddled with the president in a booth at the Magnolia Cafe, where he ordered hot tea and she sipped coffee while discussing her parents’ plight. The meeting was a break for Obama, who

Leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus pushed back hard against one of their own on Friday, saying Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) doesn´t speak for the group in calling to make it easier to deport Central American children amassing at the southern border. "Henry Cuellar does not represent the Congressional Hispanic Caucus," CHC Chairman Ruben Hinojosa (D-Texas) said during a press briefing. "He´s a Blue Dog; he comes to the meetings once in a long time." Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) emphasized that Cuellar is "a friend and a colleague of ours." But, he added, "we disagree with him on this issue."

Not counting instances when he quoted a letter from a citizen or cited dialogue from a movie, President Barack Obama used the first person singular--including the pronouns "I" and "me" and the adjective "my"--199 times in a speech he delivered Thursday vowing to use unilateral executive action to achieve his policy goals that Congress would not enact through the normal, constitutional legislative process. “It is lonely, me just doing stuff,” Obama said at the speech in Austin, Texas, according to the official transcript and video posted on the White House website. “I’m just telling the truth now,” Obama told the

Veteran CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller peppered White House press secretary Josh Earnest with questions about whether Obama really intended to eschew photo ops in general. “His view is that solving problems is most important, and solving problems is what somebody who´s exhibiting leadership is focused on,” Earnest said. “And that´s what the president was doing when he was in Dallas on Wednesday. WASHINGTON— A key Republican said Friday that President Barack Obama´s multibillion-dollar emergency request for the border is too big to get through the House, as a growing number of Democrats rejected policy changes Republicans are demanding as their price for approving any money. The developments indicated that Obama faces an uphill climb as he pushes Congress to approve $3.7 billion to deal with tens of thousands of unaccompanied kids who´ve been arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border from poor and increasingly violent Central American nations. And they suggested that even as the children keep coming, any final resolution is likely weeks

Despite fiery statements issued by Hamas spokesmen over the past 48 hours, it was obvious Tuesday night that the Islamist movement was searching for ways to rid itself of the current escalation. Hamas feels that it has been forced into a confrontation with Israel – one that it did not want at this stage because of its increased isolation and financial crisis. The massive Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours have surprised Hamas and other Palestinian groups. Hamas apparently expected a limited response to the recent rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns. But as the

President Obama on Thursday claimed he is “not that partisan of a guy” as he mocked calls in the Republican Party for his impeachment. Bears, beer and horse heads: What exactly is going on with the leader of the free world? On a single day this week in Denver, President Obama scarfed down pizza and drinks with strangers, shot pool with Colorado’s governor and shook hands with a guy on the street wearing a horse mask. His top staffers are promoting these stops on Twitter with the hashtag #TheBearIsLoose — a term one of Obama’s aides coined in 2008 when the candidate would defy his schedule. More than five years into his presidency, Obama is trying to free himself from the constraints of office,

President Obama’s ultimate weakness may be that he believes his own blarney. A year ago, Mr. Obama boasted in a “fireside” Web chat that his “is the most transparent administration in history.” There was not the slightest hint of irony. He may actually believe it. But three-dozen organizations representing newspapermen and other journalists, mostly liberals, beg to differ. In a testy letter to the president on Tuesday, the group decried the “slick non-answers” and cold shoulders they’re getting from Mr. Obama’s representatives, who have restricted access to any information they consider embarrassing to the administration. “The stifling of free expression,” the signers
