How Lindsey Graham
outmaneuvered the tea party

Politico, by Manu Raju

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Sen. Lindsey Graham recognized the threat years before it had a chance to form — and knew immediately what he had to do. After the tea party wave in the 2010 election, right-wing groups were itching to get one of South Carolina’s newly elected conservative congressmen to challenge Graham, the blunt-spoken, deal-making congressional veteran of two decades. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, a favorite of the grass roots, was high on their list. So when Graham got wind in 2012 that Mulvaney wanted a seat on the House Financial Services Committee, he quietly lobbied his longtime friend, Speaker John Boehner, to

Lindsey Graham has four primary challengers, each of them claiming to be tea party-backed. None of them has raised much money or gained much press attention. A more focused campaign to challenge the senator would obviously have been more effective. But, it´s up to South Caroline to decide.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans´ approval of President Barack Obama´s handling of immigration has dropped to 31%, one of the lowest readings since 2010, when Gallup began polling on his handling of the issue. Meanwhile, two in three Americans (65%) disapprove of his handling of immigration.(Snip for graph] These data are from a June 5-8 Gallup poll. Disapproval of the president´s handling of immigration has climbed 10 points since August 2013, when more than half of Americans (55%) disapproved. I’m going to tell you a true story, and then tell you how the news media is covering it. This is a true story: in 2012, Democratic district attorneys in Wisconsin launched a secret probe known as a John Doe investigation with the goal of proving that conservative groups illegally coordinated activities during Gov. Scott Walker’s recall election. They issued more than 100 subpoenas, demanded the private information of conservatives and conservative groups, and actually conducted secret raids. And under state law, individuals who were targeted or witness to the investigation were forbidden from making knowledge of it public. Fortunately, judges saw

Two House committees plan to get more aggressive in the next few days in the IRS targeting scandal after finding out a week ago that the IRS only keeps six months of server backups, and that an epidemic of hard-drive failures oddly kept itself quarantined to suspects in the targeting scheme. Current IRS Commissioner John Koskinen will testify this morning at the Ways and Means Committee, as well as on Monday at Oversight, on why he testified in March that the records would be retrievable, only to change course last Friday. Koskinen offered up his opening statement in writing, in

What if conservatives in Congress conceded the Republican majority leader battle in order to win the larger leadership war? After Eric Cantor’s surprise primary defeat and his subsequent announcement that he would be resigning his leadership position at the end of July, many on the right urged someone with stellar conservative credentials, like Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, to challenge Cantor’s heir apparent, California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, for the majority leader spot. But Hensarling opted not to run and McCarthy cruised to victory Thursday after a nominal challenge by Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador. Some conservative pundits who longed for someone like Hensarling to

The woman at the center of the scandal over Hillary Clinton’s defense of an alleged child rapist speaks out in depth for the first time. Hillary Clinton is known as a champion of women and girls, but one woman who says she was raped as a 12-year-old in Arkansas doesn’t think Hillary deserves that honor. This woman says Hillary smeared her and used dishonest tactics to successfully get her attacker off with a light sentence -- even though, she claims, Clinton knew he was guilty. Texas Gov. The federal Highway Trust Fund, historically, is a fund that the government can’t be trusted to spend on federal highways. Unfortunately, Senator Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) is proposing to put more money in it by raising the federal gasoline tax, a proposal he’s concocted with Senator Chris Murphy (D., Conn.). Corker’s idea is bad policy and bad politics. The politics: Gas prices are rising rapidly, taxes on fuel are regressive, and Americans, rightly, really don’t like when you raise any kind of tax at all. There’s no pressing policy reason to increase the tax. The trust fund has plenty of money to

A Western rancher who has his federal grazing rights restricted or removed doesn’t just lose a few cows. He loses a multi-generational investment, a profession, and a legacy to pass on to his children. An elderly hunter or trail rider who sees motorized access eliminated from national forest land doesn’t just lose an elk or a nice camping trip. She loses family bonding and recreational opportunities that have been passed down from generation to generation. And a state that becomes more and more dependent on federal aid - aid that´s being increasingly squeezed between national entitlement and debt obligations - isn´t just

The facts are these. In 1975, before she married Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham defended a child rapist in Arkansas court. She was not a public defender. No one ordered her to take the case. An ambitious young lawyer, she was asked by a friend if she would represent the accused, and she agreed. And her defense was successful. Attacking the credibility of the 12-year-old victim on the one hand, and questioning the chain of evidence on another, Clinton got a plea-bargain for her client. He served ten months in prison, and died in 1992. The victim, now 52, has had

Hillary Clinton — the woman assumed to be the next Democratic Party presidential nominee and quite possibly the next president — is evidently a big snooze. According to Mediate, her interviews to promote her book on CNN and Fox had underwhelming numbers. In the case of Greta Van Susteren’s show, she sent people fleeing midway. More importantly, her book itself is a sales disappointment and, I would wager, even more disappointing if you could ascertain how many who did buy it read actually past page 15.
