Downhill: Obamacare vs. ski areas
Union Leader [Manchester, NH], by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:nhchemist, 4/21/2014 10:12:43 AM

Among Obamacare´s myriad negative effects on small businesses could be this: shorter ski seasons in New Hampshire. At a forum on the Affordable Care Act held last week, Greg Goddard, general manager of Gunstock Ski Resort, said the resort might shorten its season because it cannot afford to offer health insurance to its full-time seasonal employees who work for more than 120 consecutive days, as the law requires. "We may not be able to open beyond 120 days; it may be Christmas to the middle of March ... the summer season may be the fourth of July until Labor Day,"

Such a shame. And when the ski areas get sold to Toll Brothers for condos people will just think skiing was no longer popular.

As a result of recent lawsuits against the town, police officers will soon be wearing body cameras while out on patrol. “Yes, of course it’s because of recent lawsuits settled,” Weare Police Chief John D. Velleca said Thursday. (Snip) Two cases settled this month include a $57,500 lawsuit brought by Carla Gericke, president of the Free State Project, who was arrested in March 2010 for videotaping officers during a traffic stop, and a $300,000 settlement for the August 2013 killing of Alex Cora deJesus of Manchester during an undercover drug deal gone bad.

Granite Staters are repeatedly told — by Democratic politicians and the activist left — that voter fraud is a “myth” and that the only effect of voter ID laws is to “suppress” the vote. They repeat that spin even as instances of actual fraud pile up. (Snip) He was everything the Republicans had warned about: a Massachusetts voter traveling to New Hampshire to vote illegally in the hope of changing the outcome of our elections. Schneider said he voted here because he figured his vote would count here, but would not count back home in Massachusetts.

Suppose that an authoritarian government decides to embark on a program of curricular reform, with the explicit goal of indoctrinating the nation’s high school students. Suppose that it wants to change the curriculum to teach students that their government is good and trustworthy, that their system is democratic and committed to the rule of law, and that free markets are a big problem.

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) lost his “assault weapons” jobs. Remington Outdoor Company (ROC) announced it’s moving its Bushmaster rifle and Remington Model 1911 pistol production lines from its nearly 200-year-old plant in Ilion, New York, to its new facility in much more gun-rights-friendly Huntsville, Alabama. Walter Havenstein of Alton is running for the Republican nomination for governor. Democrats claim he is ineligible because although he has lived in New Hampshire since 1999 and maintained his legal domicile here all that time, he also was a legal resident of Maryland from 2008-2011. The New Hampshire Constitution states that the governor “shall have been an inhabitant of this state for 7 years next preceding.” (Snip) Because of the Democrats’ insistence that “domicile” be kept strictly separate from “residency,” Havenstein has been a legally domiciled inhabitant of New Hampshire since 1999.

Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana recently told a Nashua, N.H., audience about his experience with a school bully. Bullying is a nationwide problem, but the bully Jindal was describing was U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who recently tried to crush school choice in Louisiana. Last Monday, March 17, parents in New York City who send their children to Success Academy, a Harlem charter school, filed suit in federal court to stop another school bully, Mayor Bill de Blasio, from denying them previously arranged space in a public school building.

Sarah Palin wants to impeach Barack Obama. In an op-ed article published last week, the former Republican vice presidential nominee declared that the crisis on the southern border (where young illegal immigrants are being detained) "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´No, mas´." The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, thinks that´s loco. (Technically, he said, "I disagree".) A growing number of our fellow Americans have taken on grotesque features, in looks and sounds, in reaction to the thousands of children from Central America who have crossed our borders as they flee poverty and violence in hope for something better.
