Ignoring an Inequality Culprit:
Single-Parent Families

Wall Street Journal, by David Maranto & Michael Crouch

Suppose a scientific conference on cancer prevention never addressed smoking, on the grounds that in a free society you can´t change private behavior, and anyway, maybe the statistical relationships between smoking and cancer are really caused by some other third variable. Wouldn´t some suspect that the scientists who raised these claims were driven by something—ideology, tobacco money—other than science? Yet in the current discussions about increased inequality, few researchers, fewer reporters, and no one in the executive branch of government directly addresses what seems to be the strongest statistical correlate of inequality in the United States: the rise of single-parent

We all know welfare promotes single-parent families and that´s what the Democrats want. A large portion of their base are women who are single parents the "Julia´s" of the country who look to government rather than a husband for comfort and support. Until welfare is changed nothing will happen and that inequality will continue to provide the Democrats with voters. When single women have babies just to get extra money from Uncle Sam something is terribly wrong.

FTA: "More than 20% of children in single-parent families live in poverty long-term, compared with 2% of those raised in two-parent families."

Each of us pays an average of ~$10,000 year because of the above sentence - not per family. Per person.

The social sense of guilt and shame associated with out of wedlock birth and fatherlessness has been deliberately obliterated. This is not just minority and inner city. Even in rural agricultural areas areas this ´revolution´ has taken place. The path back is through cultural change. Legal and legislative means will only make matters worse.

Excuse my math. The above would be true if all people were raised in single-parent families vs. all people raised in two-parent families.

Responsibility. If it´s good enough for some of us, it´s good enough for all of us. Stay in school. Get a job. Get married. Start a family and work to stay together. Attend church as a family. Go old school. It works best for everyone especially the children.

You won´t get ahead, but you will have a great time and so will the Dims who are proponents of this lifestyle.

Most of all believe in evolution and there are no consequences to these behaviors. You are slime and here by accident, so you may as well enjoy the ride, because it is all you are going to get.

The only solution would be to take the profit out of being a single parent. The government subsidizes, in so many ways, women to have more and more children out of wedlock. I would say first one, ok on us but after that you the parent are responsible. Take the profit out and watch things change.

If the stat is correct, then 80% of children in single-parent families do not live in long-term poverty. I suspect confusing concomitants with cause here; that both the poverty and the single parenting are effects of a more fundamental common cause. I suggest looking for an answer in the moral realm - notions of right and wrong.

Call me crazy but the hypothetical smoking conference would be interesting to me. Because I know we all know people who never smoked but died of lung cancer (not second hand either) and smokers who never did develop any type of cancer. That said, the obvious solution is a return to morals. Is that too unrealistic? Demos seem to think so. It´s their biggest argument.

This article suggests that divorce is part of the problem. It´s a problem that many people are aware of but one that is difficult to solve. Changing welfare laws won´t do it, because only 20% of single parent families live in poverty according to this article. Changing people´s behavior is difficult. Should we make divorce more difficult? Give bigger tax breaks to married couples? We live in a culture where there is no shame in sex outside of marriage, and little in out-of-wedlock births. And the more we try to shame out of wedlock births, the more incentive there is for women to abort.

There is a rise in single parents, because our present welfare system promotes such behavior. I have a 14 year old friend who had a baby by a 15 year old black kid. At the same time he has impregnated two other teens. Nicki´s medical bills were all paid by the taxpayers; she gets three FREE phones each month, and she calls a cab to transport her and her baby to the doctor and back, all paid for tor by the taxpayer. She is now pregnant again by a different black kid. She gets food stamps, and welfare, and she lives in Section 8 housing. She has no worries, and no incentive to work, as all her needs are paid for by the working taxpayers. Until we change the system, this will always be a problem, and we can expect the single parent number to increase.

#13-I think that is part of the problem but can´t be the whole cause. There has been welfare for single mothers since the 1960´s when Johnson instituted the so-called Great Society. I remember as far back as the 70s the complaint that the AFDC program made single motherhood profitable and in so doing, destroyed the black family. So what has caused the increase in single motherhood? I think it is cultural and has to do with society´s moral values. Marriage is no longer a prerequisite for sex or for living together. Marriage is not necessarily forever and divorce can be forced on someone even if they don´t want it. The so-called sexual revolution has hit the poor and uneducated the hardest because girls like the one you mention have no hope of either marriage or a career.

In the northwest the tramp stamped welfare moms are generational. Too many of these women choose keeping boyfriends over taking care of their children. It matters, because the kids grow up without an anchor, and their self-worth is none existent. To try to be something better can actually be detrimental to some of them. We can only turn this around culturally.

I have a great niece pretty much like the young lady mentioned above except that she is now 21 and her two kids by different men are white. It´s unfortunate that she probably will spend her life on Uncle Sugar benefits because with her history, it´s doubtful that an upstanding young man would pay attention to her. I see her facebook postings of the ones that ´move through´ her and her childrens´ lives every 2-3 months. Of course, her mother had her first of 4 babies with no daddies at age 15. So she´s just doing what she was taught by her mother, my niece.

#13 is missing the point; these young women having babies do not really want marriage or a career. Our welfare system gives them everything they need; food, shelter, medical care, transportation to and from the doctor. They can get a man any time they desire. If everything was not provided, they would have an incentive to get a job in order to pay for things.

A pet peeve of mine is the divorced women who are called, or call themselves, single parents. They were married, and often there is a husband and father who cares about his children and helps support them.

To lump these women together with those who never bothered to marry, and whose children don´t have a father present in their lives, is wrong.

The amount of free stuff thrown at the mother and kids is far more than most people know. Christmas in unbelievable and they turn their nose up if they don´t get the latest greatest and most expensive.

The reluctance of Hamas’s “military wing”—a misnomer for the more extreme elements of its extremist leadership—to accept the cease-fire designed by Egypt is, well, logical. Let’s admit it. They do not wish to accept defeat, and the Egyptian terms are a defeat for Hamas. By attacking Israel, what has Hamas wrought? Considerable damage was done to Gaza by Israeli air power, and Gazans will be picking up the pieces for months if not longer. But Hamas proved unable to kill one single Israeli with its hundreds of rockets, and all its special tricks—tunnels, longer-range rockets, a drone—also failed. Nor could

House Republicans are moving quickly to address the growing humanitarian crisis on the southern border, possibly holding votes as soon as next week. As Congress moves closer to the monthlong August recess, the speedy action sends a clear message to Senate Democrats: Take it or leave it. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), incoming Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and a group of top lawmakers working on the border crisis are set to file a bill that very closely mirrors the legislation crafted by Texas lawmakers Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, and Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Two of the larger social trends of our time — the growth of payday gambling and the legalization of marijuana — have two things in common: They are justified as the expansion of personal liberty, and they serve the interests of an expanding government. The ideological alliance behind these changes is among the strangest in U.S. politics. Libertarians seek to lift governmental restraints on consensual acts. State governments seek sources of revenue without the political inconvenience of requesting broad tax increases.
