Story of Joseph Heller´s
´forgotten´ Catch-22 script

BBC News, by Ian Youngs

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/20/2014 9:23:25 PM

After Joseph Heller published his seminal war novel Catch-22 he adapted the book for the stage. He hoped it would go to Broadway - but more than 40 years on, his script has very rarely been performed. Now it is finally getting its UK premiere. (Snip) Yossarian´s nightmare: Stationed in Italy and afraid of being shot down, he wanted to be declared insane and sent home. But military rules said that fear of death was a rational response, so anyone who asked to be grounded could not possibly be truly crazy. And those who were insane would not be aware of the fact, and therefore would be unable to ask to be grounded.

Comments:
One of the finest books of the Vietnam War era. Throughout my whole life, when things get unbearable, remembering the absurdity of any dire situation makes me talk to oneself and laugh. Hellar´s book made insanity look normal when the real crazies were in control (like 0bama now) and no one will listen.

One of my favorite novels, and probably the funniest. The sequel, no.

A good book. A terrible movie. Making this into a play is absurd. No wonder it failed several times.

Although the book was adopted by the anti-war mob as their own (which it is not), I truly love the book. For me, "Catch-22" is "The Great American Novel." Have read it many times and still laugh as hard as the first reading. Underwhelmed about a stage play. Why do people bronze those gold baby shoes?

Met Joe Heller for a film project (back in the days when you could still learn something on The Learning Channel)

We brought a restored B-25 to the airport in the Hamptons where he had a house.

Joe came up to the plane, but refused to get in.

"Nope. I made a promise to God if he got me home from the war, I´d never get in one of these again."

He never did.

I never read the book, but the movie is a disgusting pile of junk. I toggle between this, Alien 3 and Sin City as my personal worst movies of all time.

I wouldn´t waste one moment watching this tripe as a play. You´d have to pay ME to see it, and it would be a lot of $$$.

A great novel, but nothing to do with Vietnam.

It covers a period of about two years (1942-1944) in the lives of the members of a B-25 squadron in the Mediterranean theater. Heller started writing it in 1953 (a year before Dien Bien Phu), and it was finally published in 1961.

In an essay published in the mid-´70s, Heller wrote that his anti-war and anti-government sentiments grew not out of his own Air Corps experience in WWII Italy, but out of the Korean War and the political climate of the 1950s. FWIW.

Moscow - Russia is somewhat obsessed with Jen Psaki. The State Department spokeswoman has turned into Russia’s boogeyman (boogey-woman?) and favorite punching bag as relations with the United States have deteriorated over the crisis in Ukraine. She is demonized on television. Her gaffes are celebrated widely as internet memes on Russian social media. A popular radio morning show even mocked her in a song set to a popular children’s tune. (Snip) The song accused her of peddling “nonsense” to journalists and urged her to “keep it up, we want to laugh more.” Psaki’s statements are a regular feature of state-run media's

A new State Department Office of the Inspector General audit finds that the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), the agency that oversees U.S. international broadcasting, has wasted almost $5 million in taxpayer dollars on questionable and unapproved purchases. The State Department’s watchdog coined the BBGs mishap as a “systematic failure” of acquisitions. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said that the BBG’s “wasteful spending, non-competitive contracting practices, and violations of current law point to an organization without accountable leadership.”

Cincinnati - A national anti-abortion group wants a federal court to block an Ohio law barring people from making false statements about candidates seeking elective office. The Susan B. The group was accused of violating the law during the 2010 election when it tried to post billboards accusing an Ohio congressman of supporting taxpayer-funded abortion because he backed the health care law. The congressman claimed the ads misrepresented true facts and violated

Houston - More than 400 large US military drones have crashed around the world in the past 13 years, a Washington Post investigation has found. The Post obtained documents detailing accidents including collisions with homes, farms, runways, roads, waterways and even an air force transport plane in midair. Several drones vanished while at cruising altitude and were lost. (Snip) Problems included pilot error, mechanical failure and communications challenges. Though unmanned aircraft have long been used by the US military in overseas operations and by US border patrol, their safety is of particular concern as they are set to become a

Cassano allo Jonio, Italy - Pope Francis launched a scathing attack on organised crime during a trip to the heartland of a feared syndicate on Sunday, declaring all mafia members "excommunicated" from the Catholic Church. The mafia "is the adoration of evil and contempt for common good. This evil must be beaten, expelled," he told worshippers near the hometown of a toddler killed in a clan war earlier this year. The White House has set up a taskforce to tackle the decline of honey bees. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the agriculture department will lead the effort, which includes $8m (£4.7m) for new honey bee habitats. Bee populations saw a 23% decline last winter, a trend blamed on the loss of genetic diversity, exposure to certain pesticides and other factors. A quarter of the food Americans eat, including apples, carrots and avocados, relies on pollination. (Snip) The decline in bee populations is also blamed on the loss of natural forage and inadequate diets, mite infestations and diseases.

I have been listening all week to TV pundits lamenting that Lois Lerner’s hard drive has been destroyed, and therefore her e-mails are lost. This is simply not the case. The Obama administration’s claim to have been surprised by the wave of children flooding over out borders may turn out to be another political lie of the year. Sundance of Conservative Treehouse noticed a very peculiar advertisement: On January 29th of this year, the federal government posted an advertisement seeking bids for a vendor contract to handle “Unaccompanied Alien Children“.
