The Ultimate Self-Help Book:
Dante´s ´Divine Comedy´

Wall Street Journal, by Rod Dreher

Original Article

Posted By:tisHimself, 4/20/2014 4:37:25 PM

On the evening of Good Friday, a man on the run from a death sentence wakes up in a dark forest, lost, terrified and besieged by wild animals. He spends an infernal Easter week hiking through a dismal cave, climbing up a grueling mountain, and taking what you might call the long way home. It all works out for him, though. The traveler returns from his ordeal a better man, determined to help others learn from his experience. He writes a book about his to-hell-and-back trek, and it´s an instant best-seller, making him beloved and famous.

Sent this story to my own sister who is struggling with issues with her family and breast cancer. Quite a revealing new look into Dante, and his own story of fear and depression and conflict, and how his belief in a God gave him the power to rise again. Gonna read it myself.

I was in high school the first time I read it. Second time - in college. A few months ago I downloaded it to my Kindle a few months ago. Time for a re-read!

Many House Republicans

They may be in the majority, but many House Republicans feel irrelevant. That’s the problem both candidates for House majority leader promised to fix when they delivered their pitches to the rank and file at a closed door meeting. “I want every member to feel relevant again,” Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, pledged when he addressed a crowd of about 50 lawmakers. “I want you to feel like you did the first day you came to Congress. Do you remember that day? That was an amazing day filled with endless possibilities.” First elected in 2010, Labrador is the underdog candidate against House Majority Whip

Once again, President Obama has cheered supporters by bypassing Congress. Gay and lesbian rights groups are celebrating news that Obama plans to sign an executive order barring federal contractors from hiring or firing employees based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Obama´s move, which the White House confirmed Monday, will undoubtedly energize Democrats liberal base four and a half months before a critical midterm election. But Democrats who wanted a far broader anti-discrimination measure and are having to settle for a more limited step. It´s a familiar pattern in Washington as Obama tries to circumvent gridlock on Capitol Hill by taking half

Why the Bowe Bergdahl

By releasing five Taliban commanders from Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, President Obama has launched a furor on the right. The Bergdahl news comes along with a number of other developments - such as Obama´s doomed diplomacy with Iran, an anti-war speech at West Point, and Russian President Vladimir Putin´s aggression in Ukraine - that have awakened national security conservatives. This is bad news for Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and his presidential ambitions.

The father of one of the girls accused of brutally stabbing a school friend to pay homage to an eerie horror story character, apparently encouraged his daughter´s sick obsession by proudly posting a sketch the 12-year-old drew of the scary figure on Instagram. Morgan Geyser, 12, drew the sinister stickman, inspired by an online ghost story about a ghoulish child killer called Slender Man, on a napkin and left it in the family home while she was out with her parents were out for dinner. But far from being alarmed by the disturbing sketch, Morgan´s father Matt seemed to find

Jeb Bush is one of the country´s most visible advocates of Common Core, forcefully defending the K-12 standards even as it puts him at odds with a conservative base he would need to mount a viable campaign for president. But his problem is deeper than policy. Bush´s Foundation for Excellence in Education has collected millions of dollars from pro-Common Core organizations — from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the for-profit education giant Pearson — giving critics something to sink into and drawing attention to the venture that has allowed the former Republican governor to expand his profile beyond Florida. You have to hand it to President Obama: He sure does do a good job of socking it to the folks he claims to be helping. Tuesday marked the end of the comment period on the Education Department´s proposed new “gainful employment” regulations. While the administration says it wants to expand educational opportunities, the proposed rules would target community colleges and for-profit colleges -- institutions that educate disproportionately poor, minority, and working-class Americans. But even as the administration imposes new burdens on schools educating non-traditional students, the Education Department would exempt all four-year colleges from the new rules. It creates a very

I have written a great deal about the solid conservative majority in America. Most conservatives seem to think that Americans describe themselves as “conservative” when in fact they are not – but polling data on the public policy question of abortion shows that this is not true. In fact, this data strongly suggests what I have long suspected: many Americans decline to call themselves “conservative” when in fact they are conservative. When we grasp the madness and wickedness of leftism, this makes sense. No sane or moral person could ascribe to that that toxic misology.

We love Texas–her independence, her strength, and the way of life possible in the Lone Star State, but the political ruling class that US Senator Ted Cruz fights in Washington, D.C. is alive and well in Austin. Political establishment elites in both parties, united with “Big Business” interests, threaten the independence and strength of Texas. The bottom line–Texas state government spends too much, borrows too much and depends far too much on the federal government to balance the state budget. The 2012 and 2014 Republican Primary results clearly demonstrate that once conservative Texas voters understand these facts, they act at

As governor of Florida, Jeb Bush flew in Ivy League social scientists for daylong seminars with his staff and carved out time for immersive brainstorming sessions he called “think weeks.” A voracious reader, he maintains a queue of 25 volumes on his Kindle (George Gilder’s “Knowledge and Power” among them, he said) and routinely sends fan mail to his favorite authors. A self-described nerd, he is known to travel with policy journals and send all-hours inquiries to think tanks. According to those in the elite salons of Washington, ObamaCare cannot be repealed. The conventional wisdom on the cocktail circuit contends that once you mandate health insurance for millions, you cannot unmandate it. This theoretical belief has become accepted in Washington as a dogmatic article of faith. And the Obamacrats and most of the press believe that repeating this mantra often enough will make it so. Of course, many Beltway insiders claim that ObamaCare cannot be repealed because they wish to preserve the financial windfalls the law has brought them. Last summer, in this capital of gridlock, a miracle occurred. The American people rose as one and told the government of the United States not to drag us into another Middle East war in Syria. Barack Obama was ready to launch air and missile strikes when a national uproar forced him to go to Congress for authorization. Congress seemed receptive until some Hill offices were swarmed by phone calls and emails coming in at a rate of 100-1 against war. Middle America stopped the government from taking us into what even the president now concedes is “somebody else’s civil war.”

I have been listening all week to TV pundits lamenting that Lois Lerner’s hard drive has been destroyed, and therefore her e-mails are lost. This is simply not the case. Your server keeps a copy of that e-mail, and of all your e-mails – sent and received. When you create all the folders in your e-mail program that you use to save e-mails in...these are also

The Obama administration’s claim to have been surprised by the wave of children flooding over out borders may turn out to be another political lie of the year. Sundance of Conservative Treehouse noticed a very peculiar advertisement: On January 29th of this year, the federal government posted an advertisement seeking bids for a vendor contract to handle “Unaccompanied Alien Children“. Not just any contract mind you, but a very specific contract – for a very specific number of unaccompanied minors: 65,000. • Why would DHS and ICE be claiming “surprise” by the current influx of unaccompanied minors on the border

Call it Paul Ryan’s finest hour. It’s a video of the congressman from Wisconsin confronting the commissioner of Internal Revenue over the missing Lois Lerner emails. It’s easy to see why the clip is going viral on the Web. It is one of those rare moments when Congress loses its temper and a major figure says what the American people are thinking. They don’t believe Commissioner John Koskinen is telling the truth. They don’t believe him. Mr. Koskinen protested. No one believed that either. Mr. Ryan’s ire was triggered by the suggestion of one of the Democrats that Mr. Koskinen

First Lady Michelle Obama recently drew on her personal experience as a parent to justify her vastly unpopular intervention into the public school lunch program: Before coming to the White House, I struggled, as a working parent with a traveling, busy husband, to figure out how to feed my kids healthy, and I didn’t get it right. Our pediatrician had to pull me aside and point out some things that were going wrong. The South Dakota Republican Party state convention passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama Saturday. The resolution says Obama has "violated his oath of office in numerous ways." It specifically cites the release of five Taliban combatants in a trade for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, Obama´s statement that people could keep insurance companies, and recent EPA regulations on power plants. "Therefore, be it resolved that the South Dakota Republican Party calls on our U.S. Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president of the United States," the resolution reads. I still think President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, even though for 14 years he allowed his literary agent to circulate a bio blurb stating he was born in Kenya, and even though for many years he attended a church where his pastor friend shouted such things as “God damn America!” I still think that he just pretended to be Kenyan to be cool, to sell books and, perhaps, to get a foreign student scholarship at those colleges from which he refuses to release his transcripts. He’s probably not actually Kenyan. But as I speculated

Outwardly, they put on a show of unity — but privately, the Obamas and Clintons, the two power couples of the Democrat Party, loathe each other. “I hate that man Obama more than any man I’ve ever met, more than any man who ever lived,” Bill Clinton said to friends on one occasion, adding he would never forgive Obama for suggesting he was a racist during the 2008 campaign. The feeling is mutual. Obama made excuses not to talk to Bill, while the first lady privately sniped about Hillary. On most evenings, Michelle Obama and her trusted adviser, Valerie Jarrett, met in a quiet corner of the White House residence.

At the end of the Civil War, but before the pernicious reach of Jim Crow undermined the Union Army’s battlefield victory, former slaves and free blacks found themselves in possession of a most precious right -- the right to vote. It didn’t matter if a man had been a war hero in the famed, all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment or a house servant in a Southern plantation. All that mattered was that he was a man. To say that this development didn’t sit well with the progressive-minded women of this country is an understatement. Mitt Romney, seen as too stiff and robotic to win over enough voters to claim the presidency in 2012, is undergoing his latest reboot, trying to become the Republican Party´s elder statesman in an Image overhaul different from his predecessors who lost their bids for the White House. Then he became the savior of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, turned moderate Massachusetts governor. In 2012, he was a presidential candidate never fully embraced by his party. And now, he´s
