Ex-death row inmate Anthony Porter
angry, feels ‘cheated’ out of money

Sun-Times [Chicago, IL], by Frank Main

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 4/20/2014 1:27:51 PM

Anthony Porter is angry. He’s come within hours of being executed after he was convicted of killing two people. He was freed from Death Row after another man, Alstory Simon, confessed to the murders. He got a pardon, but he didn’t get a dime when he sued the city and the cops for framing him. And now, there’s a serious push to strip away what little Porter has left: his claim of innocence. Attorneys pushing for Simon’s release from prison say the justice system got it right the first time — that the evidence points to Porter all along in the notorious double murder in 1982 at a South Side park.

Comments:
In yet another, "Black Man Down" story, neither city nor state is giving him recompense. Surely 0bama would claim him as a "brother" wrongfully hurt. After all, this is Illinois & Chicago, his "permanent" home address.

He should be grateful to be free, given the fact that he appears to be guilty.

Washington - The United States on Thursday cut aid to Uganda, imposed visa restrictions and canceled a regional military exercise in response to a Ugandan law that imposes harsh penalties on homosexuality. The White House said in a statement the measures were intended to "reinforce our support for human rights of all Ugandans regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity." Homosexuality is taboo in most African countries and illegal in 37, including in Uganda where it has been a crime since British rule. Uganda´s new law, signed by President Yoweri Museveni in February, imposes jail terms of up to life for "aggravated homosexuality"

The fate of the state of Iraq hangs in the balance, US President Barack Obama said at the White House on Thursday, announcing military preparations for "targeted and precise" kinetic action against ISIS, a terrorist militia conquering territory in eastern Syria and northern Iraq. Iraqi leaders "don´t have a lot of time," Obama said, warning that the country might once again descend into civil war. While Obama has not yet ordered military action, he positioned assets in the region for a strike, he said. Obama also announced that 300 military advisers would be deployed to Iraq to advise and train officials there.

The mother of U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who has been jailed in Mexico since March 31, says she has not heard from the Obama administration since her son’s imprisonment. Pressure continues to mount for the president to take action in securing the release of Mr. Tahmooressi, who says he got lost and took a wrong turn into Mexico while carrying three firearms in his truck. Jill Tahmooressi, the veteran’s mother, said she hasn’t heard from the White House or the State Department, despite the nearly 125,000 signatures she’s received on her “We the People” petition, which should entitle her to an official

Mobile, Ala. - A federal judge in Alabama has dismissed a Catholic broadcaster´s legal claim that requiring employers to include contraception in their health care coverage is unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Callie Granade acted Wednesday on the lawsuit filed by the Eternal Word Television Network, which has studios in a Birmingham suburb. The broadcasting group said it will appeal. Dozens of church-related organizations have filed suit over the law across the country. Like those groups, EWTN contends the government is violating its rights by requiring employers to provide health care coverage that includes

Everyone seems to agree that the Sunni extremists who are striving to carve out a caliphate in Syria and Iraq have upended the region, but there is no consensus on what to call the militant group, in English at least. Many news outlets, including The New York Times, have been translating the group’s name as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS for short. But the United States government and several news agencies call it the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, or I.S.I.L. (The BBC, curiously, uses the ISIS acronym, but “Levant” when spelling the name out.) Neither way is an exact rendering of the group’s Arabic name,

He stayed with Harakat Hazm, which means “The Steadfastness Movement” in English, just outside of Aleppo. Free pregnancy tests will be available in women´s restrooms at 20 Alaskan bars and restaurants starting this December. Researchers from the University of Alaska will study whether the free tests, when paired with messages about fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), are successful at raising public awareness about the perils of drinking while pregnant. "We´re trying to get prevention messages out to women so that women understand how important it is to not drink during pregnancy," Janet Johnston, a University of Alaska professor who designed the project, told USA Today Network.

A president’s executive order is a special type of regulation, intended to tell federal bureaucrats how to do their jobs in enforcing the nation’s laws. Instead, President Obama wants to use them as imperial edicts, creating new laws that tell Americans how we must live our lives. Some individuals would receive new benefits at the expense of others, but Mr. Obama mislabels these as “rights.” He and his fellow Democrats are cashing in on issuing these special privileges. Most recently, Mr. Obama has promised an executive order granting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) protections for everyone connected with a company

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Patent Office ruled Wednesday that the Washington Redskins nickname is "disparaging of Native Americans" and that the team´s federal trademarks for the name must be canceled. The 2-1 ruling comes after a campaign to change the name has gained momentum over the past year. The team doesn´t immediately lose trademark protection and is allowed to retain it during an appeal. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the team´s name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.

In what some see as the first step to forcing the Washington Redskins football team to change their name, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday cancelled six federal trademarks of the team name because it´s “disparaging” to Native Americans. “Petitioners have shown by a preponderance of the evidence that a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term REDSKINS to be disparaging,” said the decision. Fans, however, won’t see any immediate change — even if Daniel Snyder’s team eventually loses in court. That’s because all the order will do is eliminate the trademark the team has on merchandise. The Redskins are expected to appeal.

Hillary Clinton´s minions are hard at work assembling a political machine and fine tuning it for another go at the White House. Mrs. Clinton is doing her part preparing for a run as well, churning out a bland memoir about the "hard choices" she faced as secretary of state and coyly positioning herself (again) as the inevitable nominee of the party. But after the troubled beginning to her book tour, we´re beginning to see the reasons why Hillary may eventually decide to pull the plug on a 2016 presidential run. Here are five: 1) She´s just not that good at campaigning. If the last two gaffe-prone weeks have reminded us of anything about Hillary,

Hillary Clinton — the woman assumed to be the next Democratic Party presidential nominee and quite possibly the next president — is evidently a big snooze. According to Mediate, her interviews to promote her book on CNN and Fox had underwhelming numbers. In the case of Greta Van Susteren’s show, she sent people fleeing midway. More importantly, her book itself is a sales disappointment and, I would wager, even more disappointing if you could ascertain how many who did buy it read actually past page 15. Yesterday, it was announced the Obama administration had moved on Sunday to arrest a Benghazi al-Qaeda leader Ahmed Abu Khattala. Many people, including Fox’s James Rosen pointed particular questions to the State Dept. about “why now”? As unbelievable as this might sound, the most likely answer has little to do with what’s currently being pondered as a motive for this administration, “squirrel”. The reality is within the Bergdahl deal, and the GITMO-5 to Qatar, there is a far more likely reason.Ahmed Abu Khattala is directly connected to the covert transfer of U.S. arms from Qatar to Libya in the initial 2011
