You can call it a symbol or you can call it a coincidence, but I had a phone call on Good Friday which gave me a perfect column for this Easter Sunday. Kalispell area resident Philip Klevmoen was calling from East Texas to let me know about a news story he was involved in down there in the little town of Hemphill. Philip is the gentle giant who is responsible for spreading the word of God in the form of the Ten Commandments [Snip] Some people don’t like Philip — or at least they don’t like his message. So it’s not unusual for Philip to hear from people who want him to tear down his billboards, or threaten to do so themselves.

One of a series of columns about how traditional values are being undermined.

Where is Governor Perry and the conservatives in Texas on this issue? Are they walking their talk?

Local authorities run amok. Someone doesn´t like looking at the sigh and has a friend with the highway department.

A few emails to Gregg Abbott should clear up the misunderstanding of basic rights. He´s running for governor, he wouldn´t want a Nevada-style ruckus over this..

If they want "highway beautification," they should begin by removing those butt-ugly and demonstrably false signs saying "American Recovery & Reinvestment Act" along every torn-up mile. Yes, Dallas, I´m looking directly at you. You´re looking very Detroitish these days along your no-longer-freeways.

It is the time for choosing to either follow Christ or Caesar. Those who espouse to be Christians will have their faith tested. The secular philosophy of minimalism that has infected our culture has also infected many of our churches and those who profess to believe. Too many of our people have fallen into Satan’s trap of doing only the minimum to “get to Heaven.” They may attend church weekly, or monthly, or at Christmas and Easter, throw a little money into the collection plate, or pray only when faced with sickness or hard times, but the rest of the time they do what they want when they want. On Judgment Day too many will hear Christ say, “I never knew you.”

Jesus calls us to live lives of holiness. To become saints is our mission in this earthly life. We only have one life and one soul to save or to lose. To battle sin and vanquish Satan is a daily task and can only be won by a constant reliance on the grace of God and the salvation offered by the terrible suffering of Jesus on the Cross. Our society shuns suffering and no longer recognizes that without the Passion and Death of Jesus there would have been no Resurrection, and conversely, Resurrection without suffering has no meaning.

Those who triumph in times of persecution do so through the habits of daily prayer, Scripture study, fasting, and helping God’s people, sinners all. The training and discipline of God fosters strong souls who then are able to live in His Joy and Peace without regard for whatever time in history they may live. He is Risen. Rejoice in God.

Sarah Palin and John Boehner should kiss and make up. They owe it to the country, no matter how uncomfortable the idea makes them or us feel! Palin is the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate who has become a Tea Party maverick, and Boehner is the Republican speaker of the House who is a GOP establishment dinosaur. Last week the battle lines were clearly drawn between these two camps of the Republican Party. Palin called for the impeachment of President Obama, in particular because of his abdication of responsibility for defending our southern border. Boehner, on the other

When I was growing up in Stony Point, N.Y., I was surrounded by reminders of the birth of our nation, and the sacrifices that were made to wrest our liberty from the yoke of a tyrant. [SNIP]Is there any reason to harp on the battles of yesteryear? To ask such a question in today’s politically correct climate is almost to invite calumny. After all, we are at peace, aren’t we? Oh wait, no, we are at war. But yet there is no immediate danger to our sovereignty, is there? Oh wait, there is an entire worldwide culture which would destroy

Last week my wife and I previewed a new movie produced by local superstar producer Jerry Molen and director Dinesh D´Souza entitled "America: Imagine the World Without Her." The two had previously produced and directed "2016: Obama´s America," a film critical of Obama and revealing of his radicalized personal history. So what is the purpose of their latest outstanding production, "America"? In piercing interviews and stock film footage of some of the most radical progressives (the likes of Noam Chomsky, Saul Alinsky and Ward Churchill) Mr. D´Souza presents five complaints against America

I should have known it was too good to be true. For a brief, shining moment it appeared as though the Montana Republican Party was standing up to be counted. At the party’s state convention in Billings last weekend, delegates voted overwhelmingly against continuing to allow nonparty members to vote in their primary elections. Whoa! That would be revolutionary! In order to help select Republican candidates, you would actually have to declare you were a Republican! Outrageous, said the Democrats! We often don’t have anyone to vote for in our own primaries, and we don’t want to be deprived of the opportunity to

There is a name for what the government did to the Washington Redskins last week. It is called extortion. Extortion, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s, is the crime of getting money from someone by the use of force or threats. I much prefer the definition in the 1828 dictionary compiled by Noah Webster himself: “The act or practice of wresting any thing from a person by force, duress, menaces, authority, or by any undue exercise.” You probably heard the story about how the U.S. Office of Patents and Trademarks has canceled the Redskins’ trademark on the team name because the team’s

All right-minded people hate discrimination. It’s too bad we no longer know what that is. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, one of the most recent government agencies created by Congress in homage to the oppressive world of “Atlas Shrugged,” was in the news last month because it announced (in showy communist self-criticism fashion) that it had been guilty of massive discrimination against its own employees. What the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau really does is anyone’s guess. In essence, it shakes down banks and other lenders and financial companies in an effort to keep the 1 percent on their toes and let

One of the many signs of the imminent collapse of the United States is that we can’t even agree on the meaning of treason any more. [SNIP] Because now we have a country that doesn’t heap calumny upon the head of a traitor, but rather looks to lionize him, reward him and turn him into a culture hero. I am speaking, of course, of Edward Snowden — a criminal who makes Benedict Arnold look like a rank amateur when it comes to treason.

As we celebrate the ultimate sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of Americans who died in the defense of liberty, perhaps it is fitting that we pause for a moment of silence to contemplate the imminent loss of the Constitution which they had sworn to uphold. Some would say that the Constitution has already been twisted beyond recognition by activist judges, congressional chicanery and tyrannical presidents [SNIP] But there is one manipulation of the Constitution underway now which is so destructive to our republic that it makes almost everything else which has come before it seem like child’s play. What if everything you know is fake? That is a premise that was repeatedly explored by author Philip K. Dick in his science fiction novels. Some of his stories have been made into popular films such as “Total Recall,” where a blue collar worker in the far future doesn’t know whether he is really a secret agent or just pretending to be one [SNIP] I suppose we should not be surprised that so many people prefer to hang on to their illusions about how America works than to admit that so much of what they know just isn’t so, as

And finally, on Friday, Speaker of the House John Boehner did what millions of Americans have been calling for since before the 2012 election — appoint a select committee to investigate Benghazi and to bring the truth to the American public. Of course, the truth would have gone down a lot easier 600 days ago. Instead, we have had 600 days of coverup and obfuscation from the White House, the

Examples of this abound, and you will forgive me if I don’t make a laundry list of all the ways in which Republicans are played for suckers by Democrats. That would be too painful. Instead, let’s just look at the virtual surrender of traditional values expressed by Speaker of the House John Boehner last week while campaigning in his home district in Ohio. The headline in

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

“Trust” is for Con Men: The reaction to the border chaos in Texas has accomplished one thing: It has exploded the lie at the heart of current “comprehensive” immigration reform plans. The basic structure of those plans is a swap of a) near-immediate legalization for b) increased border security in the future. The appealing idea is to let current illegals stay while taking the steps necessary to prevent further waves. The lie is the assumption that, once current illegals get their legalization, pro-immigrant activists in both parties will continue to support the second half of the bargain, the increased security.
