Liberals now love Barry Goldwater,
but his 1964 loss won the GOP’s future

Boston Globe, by Jeff Jacoby

TO THE RECENT spate of 50th-anniversary reflections on major political and cultural milestones — the 1963 March on Washington, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show — get ready to add another: The presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater, the most influential loser in modern American politics. Goldwater was nicknamed “Mr. Conservative,” but now even liberals adore him. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. penned an essay a few years back effusive in its praise for Goldwater, whom he described as an exemplar of civility, decency, and integrity. Goldwater was “neither mean-spirited nor racist,” wrote Kennedy; he challenged

The columnist should have included the entire Goldwater quotation:

"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. And moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue."

Indeed Barry Goldwater was always a class act and one of 3 principled conservatives nominated since 1900! He remained an active Air Force Reserve General until his late years. But the core story of his 61% defeat in ´64 had everything to do w/the gross disloyalty of the progressive left cabal of Rockefeller(NY), Romney(MI), Scranton(PA), Cahill(NJ) and Richardson(MA); who refused to support him and helped finance his defeat. Fifty years later, the fight is the same; the GOP Est. frauds and hustlers vs the R rank and file of plain people. But we are well past a break point w/these losers as the TP is the future; not the likes of Christie and Romney. Good riddance.

I cast my first presidential vote for Barry Goldwater. It was the first year I was eligible and I have a rusted, contents long-ago evaporated, Goldwater can on the shelf beside this desk. My dad was a campaign volunteer for Goldwater.

Let’s face it — there was never going to be a good time for a gaffe of this scale, but it’s hard to think of a worse time for it. In Iraq, where Hillary Clinton signed off on the zero option rather than push for Barack Obama to reach an agreement for residual forces, an al-Qaeda spinoff marches on Baghdad in its effort to establish a new Islamist caliphate. In Afghanistan, fifty people died in what is largely considered a successful election campaign. In Burma, which Hillary claims as one of her crowning achievements, the winner of an election from

In 1985, New Yorker Leon Klinghoffer, 69, and his wife Marilyn took a cruise to celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary. Leon never came back: Four members of the Palestine Liberation Front hijacked the Achille Lauro, shot him in the head and threw him overboard in his wheelchair. Starting in October, The Metropolitan Opera in Lincoln Center plans to show a mockery of this brutal murder — the long-dormant “The Death of Klinghoffer.” The title gives away the show’s agenda: Klinghoffer didn’t “die”: This World War II vet was murdered by terrorists. The show has widely been denounced as anti-Semitic and sympathetic to

John Edwards´ old campaign manager, Josh Stein, is the current North Carolina Senator in District 16. He´s also among the most extreme and dangerous politicians in the state. Among the reasons he is dangerous are a) his assertion that killing unborn children is a fundamental constitutional right and b) his suggestion that Senate Republicans are more dangerous than Islamic extremists. It is bad enough that this former disciple of John Edwards is serving in our state senate. To make matters worse, he also wants to be the next attorney general of the Tar Heel State. At any other time, the growing crisis on the Mexican border, with tens of thousands of unaccompanied young people crossing illegally into the United States, might dominate the news. Yet the situation has received less attention than it might amid the furor over House Majority Leader Eric Cantor´s primary defeat, the collapse of Iraq, the continuing Bergdahl matter, and Hillary Clinton´s book tour. They´re all genuinely important news stories, and they´ve crowded out disaster at the border. With Baghdad’s army disintegrating and terrorists on the rampage, the son of Iraq’s president—himself a top Kurdish official—says Iraq is effectively a single country no more. American presidents and Iraqi strongmen have been trying for decades to keep the country intact. But that effort is now failing under pressure from the Islamic extremists who are taking over more and more of Iraq’s cities. “Practically speaking, the country has broken apart,” a top official in Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government told The Daily Beast. Is President Obama done with Washington? The 44th president has never been the capital’s biggest fan, but his frustration with life in D.C. is bubbling to the surface in ways both casual and substantive. The president twice went for unscheduled walkabouts last week, taking a trip to a Starbucks near the White House with his chief of staff Denis McDonough on Monday and, the next day, turning up at a burger joint in Alexandria, Va. “The bear is loose!” is the president’s favorite phrase at such moments, and he deployed it again last week. Even the metaphor suggests a man straining at the

On Sept. 29, 1973, President Nixon’s secretary, Rose Mary Woods, made “a terrible mistake.” She was reviewing a tape recording from the previous year when she took a break to take a phone call. She meant to hit the pause button, she said, but hit the record button by accident — and poof, an 18½-minute gap. No one will ever know what was in that infamous gap. But the unbelievable story helped propel the impeachment against Nixon, and he would fly off into ignominy with that sad double peace salute and a jowly head shake. The case against Nixon was airtight.

In 1975, the same year she married Bill, Hillary Clinton agreed to serve as the court-appointed attorney for Thomas Alfred Taylor, a 41-year-old accused of raping the child after luring her into a car. The recordings, which date from 1983-1987 and have never before been reported, include Clinton’s suggestion that she knew Taylor was guilty at the time. She says she used a

Anaheim, CA - President Obama, appearing emboldened after his recent move to cut carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, on Saturday ridiculed members of Congress who deny climate change or plead scientific ignorance as an alibi for avoiding an uncomfortable truth. Speaking in gleefully sarcastic terms to a commencement ceremony at the University of California, Irvine, Mr. Obama likened those who deny climate change to people who would have told John F. Republican lawmakers said the administration has sat on the sidelines for too long as sectarian violence threatens to undo what U.S. troops accomplished during the war in Iraq. The bloodshed spurred by militants from an al Qaeda splinter group could topple the country’s fragile government while civil war rages in neighboring Syria, they said, offering a magnet for extremists from Iran and even western nations.
