The BBC reports that pro-Russian separatists are already violating the Four Party Geneva agreement before the ink is dry on the paper. (Snip) An administration which came to office promising to use diplomacy to solve every international crisis has come very close to destroying its chosen instrument. They are within an ace of wrecking the credibility in agreements themselves. His deal with Putin, like his forgotten “deal” with Assad and his hoped for “deal” with Iran are worth less than Mickey Mouse money. Ironically the demolition of diplomacy began when Obama declared his intention to rely upon it to the

Obama, for whom words are the end-all, bamboozled enough voters into voting for him twice based on hollow, airy-fairy leftism (hope ´n´ change), but the gag is just about up, the joke´s on us, and reality intrudes rudely. America may never get back its status as the essential freedom-loving global superpower after the Administration so wantonly tinkled it away. Thus is realpolitik transformed into bovine scatology.

And Caesar’s spirit, raging for revenge, With Ate by his side come hot from hell, Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice Cry “Havoc!” and let slip the lawyers of war. Ok, that’s not exactly what Shakespeare said in Act 3 of Julius Caesar, but that’s what Obama said to Holder. The president has unleashed the Justice Department on Beijing’s cyber-attackers. (Snip) The Chinese threat to counter-expose US efforts may involve Edward Snowden, whose last post was in Hong Kong. It is conjectured his target, or at least the unit he worked with, was China. I have a good friend who is a venture capitalist and travels frequently to Asia. We had lunch together a week or two ago, when he had just returned from a trip to Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Vietnam. He is excited about its prospects: the population is remarkably young (unlike China’s and Japan’s) and the country is wide open to development, as long as you steer clear of the industries that are reserved for the country’s “communist” rulers. Most remarkable of all, my friend said that the Vietnamese people love Americans. They can’t stand the Chinese, but they love

Pitching in to promote the Democrats’ leading theme of this campaign season, the New York Times features Nicholas Confeessore’s page-one story in today’s paper: “Quixotic ’80 campaign gave birth to the Kochs’ powerful network.” Confessore’s story comes out of a deep dive into the Libertarian Party archive at the University of Virginia. (Snip) Confessore claims to have reviewed thousand of documents from the University of Virginia archive, but he didn’t come away with much. Confessore’s story must be a great disappointment to his friends at American Bridge, which despite Confessore’s anodyne description appears to be a PAC headed by David

Sarah Kliff, formerly of the Washington Post, dissects the failure of Obamacare in Massachusetts. In article titled “How Massachusetts screwed up Obamacare” she describes how they “shot for the moon” and missed. (Snip) The problem with all-or-nothing undertakings is if they fail, they fail completely. The Krell Machine goes haywire and the Forbidden Planet explodes. Obama should have known this, but chose bet to everything on the venture. Kliff seems to think Obamacare will sail serenely on. But perhaps the only difference between Healthcare.gov and the Massachusetts Connector is that Healthcare.gov hasn’t run out of money yet.

TV watchers will recall the familiar advertising trope of yesteryear in which we were told “4 out of 5 dentists [or doctors] recommend” using fluoride toothpaste, aspirin for headaches, or some such. We were always left to wonder whether that fifth doctor was a moron or something, never pausing to consider that the fifth doctor might well recommend the same thing, but emphasize something else first (like flossing perhaps, or Tylenol instead of aspirin because of sensitive stomachs, etc). But Archie Bunker was coming back on the air in 30 seconds, so most of us didn’t follow up on these

Administrations absolutely swamped by scandal have a defense unavailable to more competent administrations: dense pack. (Snip) The Obama administration’s primary defense against any scandal taking root is that it must inevitably be displaced next week by a new one. So nothing lasts. All anyone can do is Move On. The Financial Times actually believes that a Veteran’s Administration scandal may taint president Obama in a way that Benghazi, IRS, the AP wiretapping scandal, Egypt, Iran, Syria, Libya, NSA, Ukraine and Obamacare could not. In an article filled with outrage the writer thinks, this time it sticks. Why should it? Dense

The village priest is not likely to be able to stand up to the likes of, say, Harry Reid, which is only about a couple of degrees short of standing up to Saddam. Scott wrote earlier this morning about Harry Reid’s support for a constitutional amendment that would give Congress the power to regulate spending on political campaigns, down to the last dollar. The amendment was proposed by Tom Udall last year; you can read the full text here. (Snip) The proposed amendment is astonishingly radical. It would allow Congress to ban any spending on federal elections, which means that a challenger could beat an incumbent in only the most extraordinary circumstances. (Campaign finance regulation has always been mostly about incumbent protection.) Or Congress could ban all contributions or independent spending by individuals

India may be at a historic turning point, as voters delivered a sweeping victory to the BJP party led by Narendra Modi, as predicted on these pages more than 2 weeks ago. This represents a repudiation of the Congress Party, the heir to the Gandhi-Nehru semi-socialist political machine that has ruled India virtually since independence. While the American mainstream media has virtually ignored this embrace of free markets and anti-jihadism, the Obama administration will soon be forced to back-peddle and deal with a man it has barred from receiving a visa to visit the United States. Karl Rove created a stir with his recent suggestion that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton may have suffered traumatic brain injury in December 2012. In addition, the report said, construction of the library would have a $600 million economic impact on the city and create 3,280 local jobs over the course of the construction period.
